Card Error, now it's become a camera error...

I'm having a problem with a memory card, although after today it seems like the camera is the problem.
I took some pictures on a Nikon at university, and using a card reader I transferred them (SD card) to my own Canon camera card (CompactFlash), so when I got home I could play around with them. When I turned on the camera, it gave a card error, I figured it just couldn't read the Nikon raw format or whatever, so I managed to get the images off the card using a card reader, and today I deleted all the images off the card to, however, i'm still getting a card error. If I try to format on the camera, it gives another error, but my technician at uni, where I was using this Nikon, formatted the card in a Nikon camera, and we thought we got somewhere, until I found it gave the same error. OK, so the cards buggered, it sucks but whatever, I thought. I tried another CompactFlash card only to find I get the same error with that one too! Surely transferring Nikon raw files to a Canon camera and turning on the camera isn't enough to completely b****r a camera?

Queue Nikon = virus posts.

Have you tried formatting either card in the card reader? Do SD cards still work in your Canon?

My canon dosnt have a SD slot, it uses CompactFlash. Yes I have tried formatting that way, but it happens to both cards so there must be something wrong with the camera.

OK, in the slot there is a pin at each far side which is bent to the sides, is this normal? There is also a pin in the centre which is bent. This is probably what the problem is. Any advice?

Perfect. Just touching it with a fine screwdriver was enough to break the pin, now it's come off. I don't think this is the problem though. I noticed it had started giving me the problem before the pin near the centre was bent.

Is the camera still under warranty? Time to call Canon I think. Don't tell them about the screwdriver :)

OK, well the problem started happening before the pin came off. I was reading through a list of things to try, one involving removing and reinserting the card, during which I put it in the wrong way (not forcefully), and that's what bent the pin. Which only needed a gentle touch to make it come out completely. I guess I have something to blame the error on now, but then again if I do get it sent off or whatever, then they fix the pins and send it back to me, i'll still be getting the error... Depending on how thorough they are testing it.

I do have a reliable camera repair shop near to me which I could try?

Worth having a word with them and getting a quote if the warranty is out.

Warranties expired so it looks like the repair shop it is.

Seeing as is its not exactly Canon i'm going to, i'm going to explain the situation to the guy at the repair shop, say that I bent the pin accidentally but the actual error that started before that remains the same.

OK, I took it in. They say it's going to cost 85pounds + VAT. They say the problem is bent pins on either side of the slot, but i'm pretty sure it's meant to look like that.

No. None of the pins should be bent. Just had a quick check in all the devices I have that accept CF cards and not one of them has any bent pins. In fact, they all have a means of stopping a card being inserted the wrong way as well.

You shouldn't have any bent pins at all mate!

It just looked like the way it was designed, with two at either end bent to the sides. Ah well, if that's definately the answer, then fixing the device itself will fix the error. So i'm happy. They said it'll take about a week to do.

John, you've just convinced me not to buy a card reader, I don't mind waiting 30 secs or so longer to download my phots via the cable attached to the camera.

Sorry John, didn't mean to rub it in :(
