Car Insurance rip off

I just tried getting a quote on confused.com and I certainly did get confused. I selected full time education/student from the drop down box, answered the rest of the questions on the page but it wouldn't let me go to the next page as I hadn't entered a "Main Occupation". So I thought it must be asking what course he'd be on, nearest being auto engineer, came back with he can't be an auto engineer and in full time education.:cuckoo:
He doesn't have an occupation so let me go the next page will ya.:bang::bang:

Comparison sites are rubbish - just go with Churchill...

Yeah...at that age it's going to hurt no matter what...just get him a Mk2 1.8 LX Mondeo (about £800 now...the shame of it..) and suck up the insurance...
Might be better than a Fiesta due to the Salary-Man image...

Be near enough two grand to insure that as a new driver.

17 year old girl I know was is paying £1300 (cheapest quote) for a 1 litre Corsa - that's group 1 insurance, even the 1.8 Mondeo is Group 8....

Just been on go compare again and tried a quote for him on a KA fully comp came back as £2783 and TPFT as £1808 so for amount of use he's have of my car perhaps 1700 extra on my premium isn't too bad and at least it would be fully comp.
Still going to keep looking though.

And the rest.
If I suggested to my son getting a Corsa, I think he'd have me sectioned:lol:
Come to think of it, I'd have myself sectioned.:cuckoo::lol:

Now you know why so many new drivers bought Corsas when Vauxhall were doing the free insurance deal, the £2k the car depreciated in year one was cancelled out by not having to pay for insurance

But he'd drive a KA?

Nowt wrong with a KA, but he'd prefer at least a Fiesta Zetec S.

hardly much of an accolade..... cosworth designed the engine in the scorpio........:bonk:

An engine still sought after and used today. The only thing wrong with that engine was Ford only mated it to an auto box.

didnt say taht the engine wasnt a good one,i was talking about what it was mated to.... and i dont mean the gearbox.....

i guess that picture should have a NSFW warning with it, HIDE YOUR EYES FOLKS! :puke:

I'll bear that in mind the next time one I hear one rattling along
That's only the tappets.
The Ka was only designed as a basic car with a fuss free basic engine providing cheap motoring. The fact it stayed for so long (13yrs) with very little improvement or changes is testament that Ford succeded with what they had set out to do.

The Ka was only designed as a cheap crap car with a 30 year old cheap basic engine that didn't involve any money for development providing cheap rattly motoring for people that didn't know any better

Yep ;)

Same could be said of the Lada Riva then.....

I've not heard any rattly ones, I think you have them confused with Skodas and Beetles.

Because I had a few Kent engined cars in my early motoring years and the tappets always started to rattle needing adjustment. The Endura E (Kent) engine was replaced in 2002 by an ohc Duratec engine.

Not only is the insurance a rip off, the prices some people are asking for cars are a rip off too. I've been out looking for a Fiesta with my son today. Saw a couple of T reg cars both with dents and creases, fag burns in every seat and they were asking £1295. The cars were in that poor condition I wouldn't have even offered the £95. Seen plenty of nice Fiestas driving about, just not for sale.:'(
I've been comparing a few quotes and cheapest are coming out at between £2500 and £3000 depending on model and engine. I've also tried entering occupations other than student and student on average is £300 cheaper than having an occupation, so his premium will be down to his age (18) and I think our RM post code gets a hefty loading too. (My son has tried his girlfriends CM post code and the quote is about £500 cheaper again).
If my son was a girl living in Chelmsford his premiums would be about £1000 cheaper.
My son keeps looking on Auto Trader at 1.4 Ghia Fiesta's which doesn't help but then a 1.25 Ghia, Zetec, LX or even base model Encore is only about £200 cheaper.
I've noticed the lack of cheap second hand cars in the dealers now, could this be down to the scrappage scheme?
I don't think my son is going to get much for his £4500 budget.

Where in Essex are you? have you tried fiesta world in Grays he takes older fiestas in Px so may have cars around T reg in fair condition.

You'd be better buying a car up here, it's much cheaper - a lot of the stuff from the auctions end up going down south...

I've looked on their website, they only list more recent cars.
I tried dealers from Wennington through to Rainham, CarDrome at Hornchurch (they had the two beat up Fiestas), went through Romford, Chadwell Heath, Seven Kings, Collier Row, back through Romford and Hornchurch.
Most dealers I remember are now gone/closed, or selling more expensive or upmarket cars.
Trouble is with the cost of insurance as it is, we are budgeted to £1500 maximum really for the car and most places with cars of that value look worse than cars I've seen sitting in the breakers yards on the A1306.:cuckoo:

Yeh! but short of my son moving out of the area, his insurance will still cripple him. Even next year, with a years no claims, pass plus and as a 19 year old his insurance is still going to be in the region of £2000.
He is even struggling to find himself a part time job due to his odd college hours/days. So being able to save up for next years insurance could be a problem too.

He don't always list his px cars on his website or ads so might be worth a call.
There is a dealer next door to him that has a lot of small cars.
There are a few dealers around the Canvey area that might be worth a try heres the website for one http://www.charfleetscarcentre.co.uk/ again ask him what his taken in px as he may have something thats not on his site.

Ive worked in the motor trade in thurrock for 12yrs so if you want to know what a dealer is like just ask. i will also keep my eye out for you.

What about him doing the Pass Plus course?

Cheers essexguy78, I had looked at Charfleets before, I was always put off buy the cars being a bit overpriced and due to it's proximity to salvage yards that deal in category D and C write offs.
If Insurance wasn;t so costly we'd have a better range of Fiestas to look at.
I had seen a 1.6 Si Fiesta on an N plate for about £650 advertised in Hadleigh on the A13. Very nice looking car for it's age, insurance was around £3200 but with the price of the car within budget. Insurance would have been £2800 again next year if he had a claim free years motoring, so I didn;t even bother suggesting it to my son.

What about him doing the Pass Plus course?
Quinn Direct are the only company I've found so far which would actually give a discount. Around £300 off the premium on a 1.25 Zetec. I've found a local driving instructor that charges £150 for the course so a bit of a saving. If I could find a nice looking 1.3 Fiesta with a few extras on it I may be able to persuade my son away from a Ghia which he now has his heart set on.

Old cars, especially "sporty" ones will be impossible to insure. I bought an old Citroen Xsara diesel (not exactly sporty ) a while back to use over the winter and I worked out that if I insured it for a year it would cost me £100 more than insuring £10k worth of newer Lexus

Have you tried pricing the insurance for the MK6 Fiesta? You might find it works out cheaper than an older one.....

If you haven't try Hastings Direct for a Quote. Cheapest by a mile when i used them, only reason i stopped was i ain't got a car at the moment.

Had a quick look at the insurance groups - most MK5 1.25s are group 6, the equivalent MK6s are group 3.....

I haven't, but good ones are out of his price range. Anything within his price range on a Mk6 has a million miles on the clock and not in good nick.
I think it is disgusting how insurance can cost so much more than the value of the car. Even TPFT was only about £400 cheaper so it makes more sense to have comprehensive.
Clarckson was right last week on Top Gear, when he said he could write the Volvo off 35 times before he got his money's worth from the premium they quoted him as a "17 year old."

Well, considering what he's studying, what's wrong with buying one that needs a little tlc? That would seem sensible to me. If you do your homework you can get a MK6 for a grand, never mind some old T plate thing that's probably been clocked umpteen times

Oh and your £1500 would have bought you a really nice 54 plate KA up here last week and left change!

A mk6 for a grand down here would need a hell of a lot of tlc.
Can't convince my son to even consider a KA, too girly in his opinion. I had hoped the fact they are preparing one as a rally car at college would have made him reconsider, but no joy.
Saw two KAs this morning, both on V plates and very rusty around the filler flap. £1695 each.
I just tried a quote on an 04 Fiesta 1.25 Finesse. Only £300 cheaper than the 1.25 Mk4/5 Fiesta so price of the car £2000 didn't make him any better off.
Just found a 1.3 MK4/5 is same insurance cost as a 1.25 Mk4/5 so no saving there either.

Keep an eye on this site, is a Vauxhall specialist but sells most makes, he has a few Fiestas but might be out your budget. its updated regularly and Mick who owns it is a good guy and willing to do a deal.
Cheers I shall keep that in mind, can't look at cars again until Thursday afternoon due to work, so I'll be trawling the web etc. in the meantime.

I'm from hornchurch so have suffered the RM postcode insurance loading. Not much can be done about that though. I wouldn't go to a dealer for a car of the value you're looking at just look for private adds. You can get more for your money. Fiestas are common with boy racers so look at insurance on crap un-cool cars like the Daewoo Matiz. Or Chevrolet as they now call themselves

It is not just the value of the car that you are insuring - it is the third party liability.

I think he'd rather walk.
