I tend to think of myself as a pretty easy going kind of guy but seriously what is with people being overly rude/obnoxious once they sit down at their keyboards...now I'm the first to admit on my bad days I can be a bit of an arse...but it seems more and more I see post and the fail the "pub test" e.g. Would you say that down the pub? And more often or not honestly I think no you wouldn't as someone will likely give you a bloody nose for it...

Now I guess my point is if you wouldn't do say it in person why would you think it appropriate in the community here? And I don't mean how you'd talk to your mates at the pub as we all know things can be a lot more personal and from an external PoV ruder when it's a friend...

And this is not actually about critique for once, this is purely general interaction on the forum

I just dont take it to heart matt, sometimes it is hard, but everyone has their opinion I guess. Someone rattled your cage fella?

Honest answer is yes someone's postings has prompted this post but none the less it's more my passion for this community than that one individual that has caused me to post

Best bet would be to RTM any posts you find rude or offensive. They needn't be directed at you. I know they're busy but I think they would rather nip any potential problem in the bud than have people alienated.

I'm sure certain members of the team of green will take great amusement at that considering some seem to think I've worn out the RTM button in the past :P

I think mate sometimes you need to get out more.. I'd consider us to be friends but allowing people to wind you up over a post on a forum.. Really is it worth it, NO.. !!!! They're the one being the dick at the end of the day, and they know they're being a dick....!!

Brash will be along soon, Matt :p

It's not so much being wound up if I can be clear, truth be known its not winding me up or causing me distress...I don't particularly like seeing people talked down to, it's not actually even being directed at me...

And YES YES YES I really do need to get out more ;)

No none of us do, but unfortunately some people can't communicate nicely with others.. Another thing is some people can take Criticism better than others, and again unfortunately that's their problem mate no yours, sorry..

Pillaging pets? Calm down Frankie Boyle

I think it's something to with photography forums (not just this one) in general... other forums I visit for my other interests, you simply don't get the attitude (for want of a better word) that seems to come with picture taking....

it's not that everyone agrees with everyone else... it's just that other 'interest' forums seem to have a bit more of a supportive community for it's other members.

Sure every forum has a troll or 10, but with pix there seems to be a underlying undercurrent of one-upmanship that I feel is misplaced...

A couple of slightly tongue in cheek MADE UP examples of things that you WON'T see on my other interest forums.

You're asking how to change a headlight bulb on a Honda CBR? You're obviously a moron who shouldn't be allowed near a toolbox

If you think that's an attractive timepiece then I can only assume you have hairy palms

Yet in the majority of photo-fora unhelpful & pointless comments abound. It is what it is I guess...

Its not even related to just photography forums either adam, im a member of a car forum and there's some right knobs on there too. Ah well, it be boring if we were all as nice as the 99.99% of people :)

It'll happen, Matt. Just blame the feckless Welsh gits in Swansea and the rectum DDs who keep them overworked.

Who said that I wonder
Its OK I've installed a Heavy duty one next to your name now

Seriously though Matt, I hope you realised that it was said in jest,
and all RTM's are welcome

Brash will be along soon, Matt :p
I was about to say, forcrissakes don't say that name 3 times.
Seems I was too late :p

Oh yes buddy I know it was ;)

Right you lot, here is the thing.... if everyone could just 'get along' in a large community, the world wouldn't be in the mess it is in. Not going to happen. Human beings simply are not like that. Lets face it, there are chimps that live in large communities with better relations than humans can manage. I came to TP from an equally large and busy motorsport forum that makes this place look like a teddy bears picnic, on that forum the bears really did have teeth and claws.

I have been a mod round here for a good few years now and watched the 'pub test' fail more and more often over the years as the membership numbers and regular poster numbers rise and come to realise that it is an expectation too high with such an eclectic mix of people. I can tell you [but I won't] which members would actually punch each others lights out within 10 mins of meeting each other in a pub.

So, here is what to do.

Rule 1 - If you generally don't like the way someone posts - use the ignore function. If you are a nosy git that can't resist reading even though your aren't going to like it, then don't forget, you had the ignore option.

Rule 2 - If you are a naturally one of those people for whom 'a spade is a bloody shovel' - then do us all a favour and read what you post twice, just try a modicum of diplomacy.

Rule 3 - If you are sensitive little flower, please see rule 1

Rule 4 - Use the RTM button, but remember, the staff line in the sand might not be the same as yours so don't be offended if we don't appear to have acted upon it. We might not have done, or we might have done done something behind the scenes.

Rule 5 - Moderators are ALWAYS wrong - whatever we do, it will either be 'moderating too hard' or 'not moderating hard enough' depending who is looking. So choose your side of the fence and we will continue to try and stand atop of it.

Rule 6 - Starting threads that ask people to be nice to each other will always end in tears, usually just before or after the first mention of Godwin :p

Hey that was a selfie from my padded cell ;)

Most of TP does get along, doesn't it? I've always thought it was a pretty good forum with a sense of community. Friendly banter, cheery rivalries, occasionally tempers run high and cool later. Just like life, isn't it?

On the whole that is exactly what TP I don't think I could have spent as must time here if TP wasn't a community like that but I've certainly noticed that there's a core few members that to seem intent to almost find to rudest/most obnoxious way to put a point across and do just that, I just find it a little sad :(

Rule 7 - Don't under thread of death disturb Yv when the cricket is on...

In all seriousness it's all pretty sound advice, I'm sure the team of green shall continue to have the upmost support and respect for their hard work from now and into the future from the majority of the membership myself included
