Well guys, I could do with a bit of advice if possible please?

My uncle is a keen tog and has recently upgraded his camera. He now has a Canon G10 that he isn't using (and hasn't used much at all in fact) which I may be interested in buying off him.

I have only got a point and shoot, and I am looking to upgrade, but my main issue is whether the G10 is a good enough camera to learn with initially before upgrading to a dslr? What is the image quality like? Am I able to shoot in RAW format?

Any opinions would be most welcome. Thanks!

Pretty sure you have full manual control and RAW shooting on the G10 which would make it a good thing to learn with.

I had one, great wee camera

The G10 is an awesome camera, full manual control, RAW shooting, sexy retro looks and a nice sharp IS lens. So good in fact, I have lost mine to my beautiful girlfriend who won't let me have it back! :D

Its a nice thing to use with off camera flash too, supports full ETTL if that's your bag as well. I miss mine :'(

I massively want one for strobisty stuff as it has a silly high sync speeds. Also its great for macro

Depends on what you want to shoot. For stationary stuff like macro and landscapes they are brilliant. They are good for learning because they are smallish so your much more likely to use it and the full manual controls and superb screen makes it really easy to learn the effects of shutter speed, aperature and ISO settings. They also have the added advantage of not making you look like a clueless idiot carrying a large camera but not knowin how to use it! They are nowhere near as good as a DLSR for action stuff like sports and they are not good for shallow depth of field portraits though.

Thanks for the opinions so far!

I do want to get into sports togging eventually, but am happy to wait until i get a DSLR in future, once i've learnt the basics and, more importantly, when i've worked out if i'm any good or not!!:D

Are the lenses interchangeable on this camera? I mean, am I able to fit other lenses on it, which could then be kept to be used with a DSLR in future?

Also, price-wise, am I getting a good deal if I buy it for £200, which is what my uncle is looking for it? Bearing in mind he bought it two years ago for £400 and - apparently - hasn't even used it that much?

Thanks again!

The lenses aren't interchangeable, however you can buy an adapter (either from Canon, or better still, Lensmate) to allow the attacment of wide angle and telephoto adapters.

As for the price, they seem to still fetch around £300 on Ebay, so £200 sounds like a bargain

BUY IT - BRILLIANT.:D GOOD PRICE, RIP HIS HAND OFF.

I use one professionionally and have few reservations about using it, from a quality point of view - speed of use is a bit slow, but that's all.

When looking at a "quality" compact I think that the LX3 should always be on the list of possibles...

Same site, G10 review...

"This is also an interesting time in the high-end compact segment, as the three camera we have compared in this review (the Canon G10, Panasonic LX3 and Nikon P6000) all have different sensors of different resolutions but at about the same size. The G10 has shown what is possible with resolution in a controlled high contrast image at base ISO, but LX3 showed what is possible with current sensor technology in a compact. In the real world, try as you might, it is just not possible to shoot at ISO 80 all the time, and in these conditions the LX3 performed better than the G10 with fewer pixels. The LX3 also has a faster lens which enables it to use lower ISO settings most of the time. The question arises: how good could the G10 have been if Canon had put a LX3 like sensor in it?"

Woof woof - he doesn't have the chance of a barely used LX though, does he? So the comparison doesn't stand scrutiny - now, if there was an LX3 at £200 going as well as the G10 and the question was: "which if these should I get?" then I could understand your post.

By the way, iso 100 for me is a luxury...I learned to shoot motorsport with Velvia 50 - often polarised, even in the 300 f2.8 (rear, Kirk polariser in the filter slot). The reality was I shooting ISO 12 most of the time. So I simply do not understand these quibbles about ISO speed - who needs more than 400? That is for dull, rainy days in December!

shooting in the dark with no flash baby :D

David - I think the other guys here have persuaded me to go for it, so sorry about that!

Whats even better is that he is allowing me to pay £100 now and then the rest when my birthday comes aqround at the end of August, and i'll get to have it now!

Best uncle in the world, or what?!?:D

I'm sure i'll be back on here soon asking for more tips, but thanks all for helping me out with this! Cheers!

?? :bang:

Hmmm. All I said was anyone thinking of a quality compact should consider the LX3..., and used ones are out there, so I didn't see any problem mentioning it as it's all hard earned money so I assumed that views would be welcome.

Of course maybe I forgot how fragile Canon fanboys can be  I wont mention the LX3 in Canon company again ;)
