Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone could offer any advice on a cheap Canon lens choice?
I currently have the 17-40L which is great but as I only own one Canon camera and lens (I'm primarily a film shooter & also a Nikon user - double whammy right there! ) it feels like too much lens for only very occasional use. Basically, I wondered if there was a cheaper alternative that could get me reasonable/half decent results & allow me to sell the 17-40L to fund more glass for my other camera systems? It would be used only for landscapes, tripod mounted most of the time & usually stepped down for my landscape work, on a crop body (500D) & for prints usually not made over 12"x12"

If there's nothing then I'll just hang onto the 17-40 but it'd be nice to free up a bit of cash for other kit if at all possible.

Cheers in advance for any help/advice anyone may have,

Mike

Apart from getting a 18-55mm kit lens and selling your 17-40mm its not going to free up much cash. I would keep it.

Im shooting both Nikon & Canon and using a Sigma AF15mm-30mm f3.5-.4.5 Full frame lens on both a crop and Full frame Canon body which just might cover your needs ?
But I also I had a Nikon mount one that I used with a Nik/Can mount adapter Manually before getting a Canon mount version of the same lens.
I'm not sure of the value of your 17-40mm and if it would free up enough money for your needs?

I was looking into that actually, there are a couple in the classifieds. Have you used the kit lens much (there's an IS II version in there at the moment) I was thinking that as I usually shoot in the f/8 to f/16 range I may not notice a world of difference but I wasn't 100% sure on this one.

That sounds like it may be a really good idea actually - I am using Nikon full frame & a wider angle was what I was trying to free up funds with the sale of the 17-40 for. I'll have a look at the 15-30. Cheers for the advice Phil (y)

Like Phiggys suggested, you could adapt you Nikon glass to your canon camera if you are doing mostly landscape work as don't really need auto focus. An adapter like this one would do just fine:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Concept®-Adapter-Camera-EOS-1Ds-EOS-1D/dp/B00LECYA7W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1451754056&sr=8-2&keywords=nikon+to+canon+adapter

I only ever manually focus my landscapes anyway so that definitely sounds like a plan. None of my Nikon lenses have aperture rings unfortunately but that Sigma is looking more & more appealing. The fact that I could use it on my D750 is a major plus point for me.

Sorted then cheers guys, am off to do a bit more research & then probably off to the classifieds with the 17-40 :) Thanks again to everyone that offered advice

Hi Mike. I used to shoot all of my 40D landscapes with a Tamron 17-50 2.8 (non VC). They're an excellent lens with better low light performance and half the price of the 17-40. Before that I used to shoot with the 18-55 kit lens and have always argued that when it's stopped down to F8 or smaller it delivers good landscape results. I had a double page gallery image printed in Digital Photographer with it :0)
