Holy cr*p Batman! i didnt know this was coming out!

And hold onto your hats ladies and gent... its ONLY.. £569!!!!!!!! :gag:

Its here at Jacobs.

B&H have them at $499... looks like we get shafted again..

Although Simply electronics have them at £489.. now THATS a bargain!!!

This may be one of those instances where you'd actually save money buying it from the USA. I don't think there's any duty on digital cameras, there would be VAT at 15% of course, and I suppose the carriage wouldn't be cheap. But even so it could well work out cheaper.

We have this conversation every new camera launch. It will drop in time. The G10 was over £400 for most of its life. They're "pro spec" compacts. In fact, the press release for the G11 talks about Getty using them.

Although having played with both a G11 and an S90, my money would go to the S90 for handling...

I know what your saying and of course, we do have this conversation every time, because they surpass themselves every time! the RRP for this POINT and SHOOT is over £600!!!im sorry, but i think its funny and deserves taking the micky.. lol.. but saying that.. im still going to get one..

Give it a few months, it'll come out of the stratosphere at some point! Has anyone played with one yet? I had a try in my local currys, but I'm interested to see it's ISO handling which seems to be it's major selling point!

Had a play with a pre-release one back in August but wasn't allowed to take any pictures to keep. Feels very like a G10 to use. As I said, I'd probably pick the same sensor in the S90 if I was buying new now...

not an item of beauty though is it? Looks rather like a water-pistol camera I had as a child!

loving the look of this myself.
really a fan of the more svelte Lumix Lx3 though so want to see how this market goes and will purchase a quality compact next year hopefully

I'm one of those saddos whose heart rules his head which combined with being a camera nut is a very bad thing!

Hence I bought one of these the day Jessops got their first delivery. I'd previously had the G10 and really liked it and I have to say the G11 is far better at higher ISO's and the dynamic range does look to be better. It has all the good points of the G10 (handling, control) and has a far better sensor.

It is expensive but will drop in due course. That said the G series Canon's do seem to hold their value much better than most 'compacts' so that initial heavy cost can be offset if/when you sell it to upgrade to the next version

limited viewfinder properties
non electronic
so for macro..??

also i feel like a japanese tourist holding a camera up like some myopic book reader
a viewfinder with dioptre correction is more the way i have been used to

The viewfinder is limited but at least it has one unlike most compacts on the market now

For macro I find it's pretty good and them movable screen is a huge advantage over the G10's fixed screen

Not sure what you're referring to re 'non-electronic'

hi dave
that sounds interesting..a moveable screen..i will need to check that out
parallax is the problem i thought with see through viewers
my olympus has a electronic viewfinder...like a camcorder..it isnt a slr
so when i look through i can see the effects of
focus
exposure
and framing
just as the lens sees it

its the camedia C765 camera if you want to check

and i agree its getting daft all those cams with no finder at all
i even saw a sony slr lookalike with no finder

i am in a minority i know but before the £££'s move from my account i will have to have what i want...if its still available

the bridge slr is my last bastion i think
thanks for your reply
geof

Iv been looking on Ebay, there seems to be quite a few on there.. Digital Review are a good retailer, i baught a 40D from them with no problems (OR Tax!) also has a 580EX as well.. no problems.. they have it for £415 (now were getting somewhere!)

I also have only just noticed the moveable screen! im finding it hard to find a really good use for it other than when your shooting over the heads of people.. i could use that on my 5D! but other than that.. maybe its for taking self portraits??

Look more like a rangerfinder camera to me

cameras let light through a lens onto a sensitive part which can be reproduced...in our case digital images

i like rangefinders and they come with interchangeable lenses...

looks arent everything and i personally like a pocketable camera which looks a bit leica-ish
it seems to declare photographs are taken here...step right up and call me speedy

as for that screen...i dont know if it would be really all that good for macro

pricewise its a bit high for me but the canon site shows pretty good pictures produced by this little camera

mrcrow IF you read my post I was only making a reply to the comment of it looking like a water pistol

A few point to your comments
Some rangefinders had interchangeable lens but not all.
Looks have nothing to do with the usage or quietly of the camera, we all know that, but how it feels in your hands do make a difference.
As for the screen it is good for macro you have a big screen you can see the focus and DOF more then you can in a viewfinder.
As for price no one is tell you to buy one.
But please read what you are replying to first

hey man...it wasnt the water pistol part...i happen to like the tag
no i was only saying a rangefinder..which was an observation made
fits the serious camera bill...
you are a cross old billy arent you

now i WILL buy one and hold my camera at arms length to take macro shots
lighten up old chap

i know my place..

I was thinking about getting one, but I had a play with one in Jessops yesterday and now I'm not so sure.

It's just a bit too big for a compact camera for me. I would have liked to have seen a S90 though.

But why did they have to go and produce it in a plastic body!?

this is the post i was quoting...no pistol there old chap
whats your take on that ..:|

NO this is what you replied to

You took it out of context.
It so easy to change the meaning of things when you take them out of context it happens a lot in the press that why you cannot believe them all the time.

But why did they have to go and produce it in a plastic body!?

I have got a G10 and ‘The exposed body is nearly completely metal (only the battery door and the ports cover are plastic), and the matt-black finish gives it a stealthy, classic look.’ The weight is 362g the G11 is 355g so I would have guessed it was metal by this.

The G10 was over £400 for most of its life.

Looking at camerapricebuster the G10 dropped to £350 within weeks of launch for uk stock.

Basically if you're willing to loose £200/month on the G11 buy it now, or wait a few weeks and watch the price crash to sub £400

Yes, and then it rose again when the exchange rate stuff kicked in. It's only cheap now as its end of line. I also reckon from that graph that it was over £400 for most of the time shown on that graph.

I reckon the G11 will settle in the £400-450 range for sometime to come - for UK stock.

I think it will drop, but as Grumpybadger says, not below £400, when you look at the RRP being over £600! and the price of the G10, the G11 being 'newer and better' wont be in the £350 region any time soon.. i will wait for a little while.. but i do like the little monster..

well the first line up on the graph interpolates to £368, so price has been lower than that pretty much since launch apart from a few weeks of spikes. BTW I purchased the G9 a few weeks after Launch for £311 two years ago from amazon (rrp was £450 I think), keep a close eye on them as they get stock in, they always seem to have the cheapest price for Gx cameras for some reason.

As the G10 & G11 have same retail, well have to see if the G11 suffers the same price drop :) It's popularity will partly dictate the price too.

The UK approach does seem to be enter with very high RRP, gouge the early adopters who preorder, then drop the price drastically after weeks/months, in the USA the rrp seems much more reasonable at the outset.

thanks for the heads up
at the end of the day i cant afford to buy it even though its close to my ideal
pocketable, good pedigree etc, and high specification

hope we cleared the air a bit as i felt later i had done you an injustice
sorry
