As well as the 24-105 2.8, 70-200 2.8, 15-35 2.8 and 100-500, I also have the 50mm 1.2 and 85mm 1.2, I'm going to be honest they don't get used as much as they used to.It's great. I forgot to mention the pre-shoot feature of the R1 in my first impressions. It's a big deal and meant I could shoot less and be confident of getting the peak moments. A colleague has the 24-105 2.8, and I'm quite tempted...but I love the primes, even if it's a bit less convenient.
Makes complete sense to me. I'm still working with the EF 24-70 2.8 M2 and 70 -200 2.8 M2 and can imagine the RF 24 - 105 2.8 will be the next zoom but it's not urgent as most jobs primes are working very well.As well as the 24-105 2.8, 70-200 2.8, 15-35 2.8 and 100-500, I also have the 50mm 1.2 and 85mm 1.2, I'm going to be honest they don't get used as much as they used to.
I'd say the 85mm is a lens I could sell now and never miss it, but I just can't seem to part with it, it's a beautiful piece of glass
Before getting the 24-105 2.8 I would go to sporting events and use my 70-200 and if I needed wider I'd use the 15-35 and the 50mm, but I was starting to find it a bit clunky switching between lenses, one particular Tough Mudder in Scotland I just knew I had to get a 24-70mm, but in the end I opted to pay a bit more and get the 24-105 and now it's one of my favourite lenses, so versatile, I can't wait to get the equivalent design 70-200.
R1 should be with me in a few days, got the tracking number today, so I'll be keen to get out and test it, particularly the pre-shoot and the dual stills/video shooting.
Why? What are you trying to gain by moving to Canon that you can't get within E mount ecosystem? RF mount lenses are more expensive and selection is far more limited.Thinking of making the switch from my Sony A9 Mk1 to a R6 Mk2. Anyone made a similar move? I only have 2 lenses so not deeply committed to 1 system.

I surely can't be the only one here looking at E mount or dual system to escape RF mount limitations, at least when constrained to a certain budget. Old adapted Sigma ART lenses is the only saving grace but you already can have that on E mount in plentiful supply.
OK first snag with R1 - I can't find a way to fire the flash without it beeping and making the fake shutter sound as the flash won't fire in silent shutter mode. Anyone know how this works?
Is that not the case with the R5 mk1 too - I struggled to get my R5 to work with on camera flash while photographing the presentation of the trophy at the Dunhill Links golf (had never used it with on camera flash before) - Camera was in electronic mode because camera's at pro golf tournaments now have to be silent. Obviously this didn't matter for the trophy lift - someone said to me switch your camera to mechanical shutter and it worked - I found it odd as my R3 had always fired a flash no problem in electronic shutter mode.OK first snag with R1 - I can't find a way to fire the flash without it beeping and making the fake shutter sound as the flash won't fire in silent shutter mode. The old R5 and any R6 / R8 will not work in electronic by design. Not sure about R5 II - that would be very nice if it did.Did you have this problem with the R5? My flashes would never fire in electronic - I always have to use first curtain.

Interesting, I’m literally just heading out with my R1 but when I’m home later I’ll try mine and see what it doesWhat I'm experiencing with the R1 is new. The R1 will only fire my flash with "Silent Mode" off which results in the camera making a beep and a fake shutter sound. It's firing the flash in electronic shutter mode, but why add the sounds? I can't find a way to switch the sounds off. I wanted to use the flash shoe to control a remote cam for an event this evening, but not with the beeps so I held the remote in my hand instead. I'll look again in the morning.
I ordered the R1 last Monday at 11:15am and it was delivered at 3pm on the FridayAnyone know what the ETA/normal lead time is on Panamoz getting new kit? I am really in need of a 70-200 as my 2005 F4 has finally given up the ghost and i like the idea of being able to use TCs with the new version.
Yup similar experience for me, order for a lens placed on Thursday and delivered following Monday. First class service.Anyone know what the ETA/normal lead time is on Panamoz getting new kit? Send them a message?Re my question - it was about when they will have stock not delivery time.
No stock of the new lens yet but it’s available and in stock on Wex

Have you switched off Beep under the Wrench menu? What I'm experiencing with the R1 is new. OK I've done some more extensive checks, and managed to replicate what Tim is saying I think.I'm not sure if this helps, however I'm still getting used to the R5 mk2 (having eventually given up the old 1Dx mk2 mirror slapper) and I tried flash this morning with a relatively old 600 RX with the camera in silent mode and the flash worked fine.
Happy to try some other tests to see if it's different from the R1 and indeed if you want to borrow my 600 RT to try it out you're very welcome as I've got 2 and they're hardly used.
Send them a message?
Hmm, they normally are pretty swift in replying...Yes, a couple of days ago - awaiting reply
I was also thinking this.Have you switched off Beep under the Wrench menu?
I hadn't contact CPS in a while. Personal CPS accounts here have been deactivated. I need to re-register with the company details then transfer the data from the old account. What a fuss.have you actually contacted your local canon cps rep? They will either tell you the settings you need to change or will file a bug report. I doubt many others on here will have R1 at this time
OK I've done some more extensive checks, and managed to replicate what Tim is saying I think.
I'm assuming the menus for the R1 and R5 mk2 are pretty much the same, and I've managed to get rid of the shutter noise by doing the following..
Red menu no 6 shutter silent function set to "off"
Shutter mode "electronic"
Wrench menu beep enable set to on and then options all set to "minimum"
This seems to work?
Have you switched off Beep under the Wrench menu?
I was also thinking this.
Even back with the old DSLR’s silent mode shut off the flash.
But as soon as I buy a camera I go through all the menus to stop it making any noises
what do you think so far?Had my R1 a week and today was the first chance I had to go out with it - quite a few different settings to the R3 which took a bit of working out, drizzly rain. cold and dark but was determined to at least try it out (lot different to my usual subjects - not used to things being so still lol - waiting for the new racing season to really put it through it's paces)
Is it the case that silent mode disable flash. But using electronic shutter which is inherently silent does not.I hadn't contact CPS in a while. Personal CPS accounts here have been deactivated. I need to re-register with the company details then transfer the data from the old account. What a fuss.
Thanks! I did switch off beep but didn't know about all the options there.
Yes, but as above there are options to take care of too.
Thanks!
Hey Tim, trust all is well ;-)what do you think so far?
All good here, put your 200-400 to good use again yesterdayHey Tim, trust all is well ;-)
Well - only used it for a few hours this morning, must have looked very odd sat beside a zoo enclosure for nearly an hour adjusting settings / trying / re adjusting - originally I thought like many others "ohh it's just an R3 mkII" but very happy to say it's not, it's way better, the AF is so snappy / sticky, Personally - very very happy with it, can't wait for the racing season to start again so I can really play.
The R1 is 1115 pretty light compared with the 1DXM2 1530, almost halfway to the R5M2 is 750. Just saying... I'm also curious about the R5M2 so following this one. Most of the recent chat here is about the R1 (understandably), and not much about the R5 mk2 (which is why I'm not sure why there aren't individual owner's threads like we used to have).
I've now given up the size and weight of the 1 series bodies but it seems to me that the mk2 is fairly close in spec (apart from cross hair af points ) to the R1, and I wonder if anyone has both, I'd be interested in comparisons in the real world particularly with regard to the autofocus which in my limited trials with the R5/2 is light years ahead of my old 1Dx mk2.
Anyone? Thanks!!
Aye, Tim, it's an interesting one...at my age a few grams makes a hell of a difference!!The R1 is 1115 pretty light compared with the 1DXM2 1530, almost halfway to the R5M2 is 750. Just saying... I'm also curious about the R5M2 so following this one.
Good point, but I'm not yet convinced of the accuracy of eye control, I need more time with that. Assume it's the same with both models (ie R1 and R5/2)With the availability of eye-control for moving the AF point and pre-shooting that activates with a shutter half-press, is back button focus still necessary?
