Canon EOS R Series Cameras

Might have just bought one of these.... as soon as Panamoz got it in stock

Replaces a good old 70-200 F4L (non IS - it didn't exist at the time) bought in March 2005. The focus motor failed earlier this year and uneconomical to repair (but I still use it as a remote) - Its a phonominal lens even now. Thats my excuse at least...
Kinda hoping that the Z lens will lower the price of the older RF models, help to justify the itch.

Not sure if I nabbed the last one but they showed stock of the black one on Tuesday, I ordered it and then it went back to out of stock.
I've got my tracking ref. so I should have it Saturday or Monday.

Love my current RF 70-200mm but after buying the 24-105mm f/2.8 with internal zoom I want that on the 70-200 to. :)

Do you have any issues with the lower pixel count in the R1 compared with your R5?
I don't either, yes I've only had the R1 a week but I've had the R3 for 3 years (exactly 3 years on Saturday) and I've never found it lacking compared to my R5.

It’s early days. So far no and I don’t expect any major problems as I’m not cropping very often. This was a key consideration between the R5 M2 or the R1. probably it will happen one day that I just don’t have the reach for something and can’t crop as much as I’d like to. For the studio and when I need more pixels (but not fast AF or fps) I still have the GFX100.

I have a R5 on test over the Christmas period and will be interested to see how it compares to my R6 and R7. I’m not convinced on the overall benefits of a 45 MP sensor as they seem to require good glass and technique. There must be a good reason why Canon only put a 24 MP in the R1. Perhaps my test will prove otherwise.

OK I've done some more extensive checks, and managed to replicate what Tim is saying I think.
I'm assuming the menus for the R1 and R5 mk2 are pretty much the same, and I've managed to get rid of the shutter noise by doing the following..

Red menu no 6 shutter silent function set to "off"
Shutter mode "electronic"

Wrench menu beep enable set to on and then options all set to "minimum"

This seems to work?
Hmmm I don't get the shutter 'beep'.
Even with Wrench menu beep set to disabled, all I hear is the clicking of the flash, wish I could stop that!!!

There are very clear benefits if you print and print large. Landscape and portrait photography are two examples where you probably really want something like this.

You are absolutely right that you need quality glass and technique.

R5 will at least assist you with that by actually focusing on your subject not 20% out like 5ds. Tripod or bare minimum ibis + higher shutter speeds all help. Aperture no more than f8 due to diffraction so glass must be top level, typically best primes

I’m still using my 70-200 F4 non IS that I bought in 2006 maybe I was lucky but mine is so sharp that I’ve never thought to replace it with anything newer , it still works perfectly, sorry to hear yours isn’t working properly :(

Me too. One of my best lenses.

Paul, I'm not sure I can replicate that on the R5/2, looking over my previous notes, actually I now have the beep disabled and it all seems to work silently, however I haven't had the chance to try it out properly.
The flash (remember it's an old 600EX RT) doesn't change from red to green in the flash unit, however it seems to work.

I need to do a bit more investigation, but perhaps it's a starting point for you chaps with newer flash units.

Hope that helps....

I’m loving the idea you think a 600EX is an ‘old’ flash.
I’ve got a 550 that’s still serviceable, and it was 2nd hand when I bought it near 20 yrs ago.

Ah, technology moves so fast!!!;);)... I just assume that anything post the DSLR demise is probably not going to work with the new stuff!!!......

In case anyone is searching for "Canon Picture Style Editor that doesn't work on a Mac", their Europe website is way out of date with a version of the software for OS 10. You'll find the up-to-date version on Canon's Asia website.

Mine is too. Luckily I can still use it as a remote and it takes fantastic images - I like you had no need to replace it but I was at an event this march and couldn't get it to pick up focus, I thought it was because I had it on my 7D2 and it was just me - I'd become too used to the R5, then i tried it a month or so later on the R5 and had the same, so I did a few tests and indeed it doesn't focus. if i manually assist it into the right ballpark it will pick up but its not reliable enough to risk using it in anger.

I managed to dig out my receipt.... look at that, what a bargin... and I got Canon cashback on that too.... back in the days when you had to cut your barcode out and post it to Canon...!

WhatsApp Image 2024-12-02 at 16.20.14_9714905b.jpg

and a 100% crop of a remote shot I took earlier this year... I'll say it again, remote with a fixed focus point...

70-200 F4, 7D mk2 1/1600 ISO1600 F6.3.... look at sharpness... and 7D 2 is a noisy old b****r at the best of times.... Its a wonderful lens.

If you're looking for an AC adapter for the Canon R1, the older DR-E4 DC coupler works perfectly. I received a couple from AliExpress for just $15 each—a bargain compared to Canon's official ACE-19 adapter, which costs around $500. When you power up the camera, it displays a warning that the adapter isn't Canon-made, but it works.

Tim, I've got one from my 1DX 2 days, but of course Kevin that adaptor won't work on the R5/2, the batteries are completely different.

I've just bought a CUBE 2 charger for my mk2 by Hahnel, at £70 it's much better than the Canon one and does 2 batteries at once, and can run off 12V DC.

I'm putting together a complete range of kit with my 1Dx 2 and all the cards (CFAST) etc to sell and I'll include that charger, I'd completely forgotten about it!

Edit...sorry I think I've made a boob, they are two completely different beasts....sorry. The DR_E4 goes in to the battery compartment of the 1 Dx2 and obviously won't fit an R5.

Ignore silly remark!!!:mad::mad:

Right the DR_E4 is for long video recording and event live streaming

I've been continuing to test the R1 AF settings and customization. I will be keeping the back buttons to switch between tracking modes. Here’s where I’ve landed much the same as before but with a couple of tweaks for the new features that are possible compared with R5:
Main Setup - AF set for People Detection with Eye Tracking enabled.
Shutter Button: Eye Control AF for point selection. Half-press starts pre-shooting and Servo AF tracking.
AF-ON Button: Activates AF tracking and metering, using the main AF settings (People + Eye Tracking).
* Button: Set for Spot AF Tracking (no subject or eye detection). For precise focus when there's no clear face.
AF Point Selection Button: Configured to Recall Settings for slow panning creative attempts.

That's very useful, Tim........I think I can set up the same settings on the R5 mk2, which ones are you able to do with the R1 that you couldn't with the R5/1?
It would be useful for me to know what has changed as I didn't have a mk1, it seems to me that the menus are the same between the R1 and R5/2 however I don't think anyone else so far has changed to a mk2 from a mk1, in fact I may be wrong but I haven't seen any Mk2 posts????..and you're not using BBF?

New functions are the eye control to direct the AF point, pre-shooting, and the recall settings. I am using back button focus - three with the different settings as above. One is probably redundant so i may adjust again. Curious to hear what works best for you and others.

Quick feedback on R1 as a remote-controlled camera with AF - it works very well. Up to now, I've always used zone focus for remotes, so this opens up new possibilities when the light is bad or to have a wider aperture for separation of the subject from the background. I still have the original R and tried with that, and it works pretty well, too. Probably, all the mirrorless systems work well. Maybe I'm the last person to realise this.

I have the R5 and the R5 mk2 I love the R5 and found it better than the r7 as everything fits better in my hands and most function dials are easier to use as most on pt will know I chopped all my fingers of in an accident on my left hand I have had the R5 mk2 since it came out and even found it also an Amazing Camera and what an improvement they have made to it I would say it is a 25% better I am interested if many more members on here are finding the same ?

I have the R5. In what way is the MkII better. Interested in your real world experiences

Edit to add - I’m probably using nowhere near the full functionality of the camera and interested in trying some wildlife on top of my current landscape preference.

Also, what lenses do you use? I’m looking at the RF 100-500 to replace my MkI EF 100-400 and perhaps move to the RF 24-105 from my current EF version.

I know it’s not “essential” to move to the RF lenses but….

The mk2 Auto focus is a hell of a lot better with moving subjects and when it locks on in a burst everyone in the burst shots are in focus and defiantly the pre capture is another game changer for me I hardly miss a shot in the sequence were before I was missing that my prime photography being wildlife also I do love my macro Also and its spot on with the little bit I have done and cannot Waite for next Macro season to start with it. I have Fortune to use a 600f4 prime lens for wildlife and the Rf 100 2.8 for my macro also my keeper rate is twice as much now don't get me wrong the r5 mk1 is an amazing camera and I love it also I hope this helps I am no good with words

Can I ask those with experience of both the R5 and R5ii; is the image quality at higher isos really badly reduced by the new sensor in the real world, or is it more of an internet click bait headline

Now you've opened a can of worms :ROFLMAO: I sold my Canon long lenses and have been exclusively using the OM system for wildlife as it has pro-capture, plus I felt the AutoFocus was better. I have longer and lighter (and less expensive) OM lenses, but find framing difficult when you need to make the most of the pixels you have - it was much easier when I could frame wider and crop more. I've only used my R5 when I've needed flash. The R5ii could tempt me back....

I've moved from a 1Dx mk2/ EF 100-400 mk2 /EF 24-70 2.8 mk2 to the R5ii /RF 100-500 and RF 24-105 f4 as I thought it was time to upgrade.

I've not had a chance to do much action stuff as I've been concentrating on getting the AF system sorted out (which in my case is taking quite a lot of experimentation!!) and thanks to Tim for some suggestions on that.

So far (and I can't compare with the R5 mk1 as I haven't used it) the AF and tracking seems to be excellent, much better than the 1 Dx2 which is the main reason I've changed , moving from 24 to 45 Mp certainly lets you crop more however I have noticed noise, which I have to investigate further, obviously the R1 with half the pixels (and bigger) is going to be better however I'm sure Topaz will take care of that.

One addition which I find useless is the extra ring on the lens, however, it's very awkward to use on the 100-500 as it's so close to the body so I've programmed an alternative dial for exposure compensation.

Otherwise, looking forward to some field trials!!

Bebop, I know how you feel. I have just returned from another trip to Botswana. This time the Canon Africa rep was there with a truck load of goodies for us to play with. I used both thr R1 and thr R5 mk ii ( which I own). I loved the viewfinder and the button layout on the R1 but the focus seemed as fast and accurate on the R5mk ii. However nothing had the reach of the OM 150-400 lens. Well that's not quite true, the RF 1200mm does but it's huge and costs somewhere near £20k!!

Another amazing trip and great to be able to play with all the gear too. I'm still trying to work up the stamina to go again :ROFLMAO: I'm loving the OM150-400 and with the OM1 it is the same weight as the R5 plus 100-500mm. However I'd like more pixels to make up for my lack of skill.... there is no perfect system is there? I've been trying not to look at more gear :)

Kinda hoping that the Z lens will lower the price of the older RF models, help to justify the itch.

I was going to post a photo of the box but the photo taken on my phone is too big to post! Anyway it arrived in 2 days and is now safely stored away for me to open and have a play at christmas (just a big kid really!!)

So I had another good run out with the R1 on Saturday, this time was also the first use of the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Z.

I photographed my local parkrun, followed by a local running clubs monthly 5K run.

The R1 was incredible as always, I still can't believe how quick the facial detection is, even as I move the camera slightly to focus on a particular runner, it's almost like the camera knows exactly who I want to focus on :ROFLMAO:

The 70-200 was everything I expected it to be, having already bought the 24-105mm f/2.8L USM Z, I knew how good it was going to be.
Having used the original RF 70-200 I love the internal zoom, it has a very short throw that can be done with a very short movement of the thumb.

Seems like I will have 2 weeks to play with the Canon R5 and the RF 24-105 f4L IS under the Try the Kit scheme. Impressed.

Just need to make sure I’m not overly impressed and tempted to buy.

if you're moving from dslr this is a risky move :)

Not so bad, I already have a R7 and R6, but no R lenses.
ah then it may be safer :) I shoot mainly primes and so far have only been tempted by RF 85 1.2 and RF 135 1.8.

Get the 85mm 1.2 - it's a thing of beauty!!! As is the 50. :)
it really is... for the 50, I'm still using the Sigma Art EF 1.4 - I tested alongside a friend's RF 50 1.2, and it was too close to warrant upgrading... and I still have 3 EF camera bodies which I use for multi cam videos or as remote cameras so migrating to RF is going to take a long time.

Does anyone have experience of the RF 50mm 1.8 STM. I know it’s not an L lens but does seem a good value lens all the same?

Nice to know. Is this for all apertures? Sigma does have a little bit of field curvature which only completely disappears around 5.6
