Canon EOS R Series Cameras

I guess it happens in some situations
I had a couple of times when the camera locked up before the update but it’s been fine since
I have heard about people having issues with this update though on the Fredmiranda American forum, I think it can cause problems with busy backgrounds as the eye AF is now more sensitive
That makes sense. Post update my R6 is fine, better even, on following a person/animal face and eye in the clear.

However busy or darker/less contrasty scenes defo lead to a step back. Been taking lots of otter pictures recently, though yesterday it couldn’t even focus on an otter’s head moving through the water.

Whereas before I could focus on a bright Kingfisher in a bush easily, yesterday the camera just started moving focus away via a series of focus squares overlaying parts of the bush surrounding it.

I’m defo going to cycle back.

Was able to use EOS utlity to change firmware back to 1.4. Though a little fright when camera stuck on 73% for about half an hour. Took battery out, put firmware on a newly formatted card, replaced the original and it went smoothly after that.

Just done the usual thing and pointed camera at photos, pictures, cats and things and it is defo. better again. Will go and try some wildlife later and see how we get on.

Just walking around John Lewis and they have loads of camera stuff reduced. Spotted a canon Eos R with adapter reduced to £1385 in box, unopened full canon and John Lewis warranty. I so don't need a new camera lol

First outing with the R6 and RF 70-200 F/4 ..... all good even if there was no light until I realised setting up slot 1/2 to Raw / Jpg isn't a global change and my carefully saved custom settings were still jpg/jpg

Anyway ISO 5000 camera jpg still impressed .....

I joined the club today too - haven’t had much chance to get out and take any meaningful shots yet (and it’s raining here at the moment!), so just setting everything up.

I’ve read about the dual back button focus trick, so I’m just figuring out the settings for that. Super happy with the R6 so far though. The EVF is far better than expected.

Feel like I've got my camera back:)

Kingfisher.jpg

Previous to rolling back firmware, the autofocus would have just drifted away from the Kingfisher, placing a bumble of AF squares over the branches instead.

wry nice and good news too!

That looks a lovely shot. What’s it like cropped? Imagine the details is still good.

What is the support like in Lightroom for the R5/R6? Are most of the RF lenses supported now in terms of Lens Correction? Is CR3 natively supported?

It looks as though I’m gonna have to ditch my last pay to own copy of LR and sign up for the subscription (sigh). Ah well, it had to happen at some point and I’m sure a lot has improved since then.

I use Lightroom and Photoshop CC and the R5 files work fine in there. Can't say about RF lenses as I am using EF with an adapter

I NEEED a few decent CF express cards. My prograde one is hopeless, kept quitting today doing 4K 120. Guys, help me out with a bunch of news ones please?.

Looks like mine has got stuck on 73% too and the LED light is flashing red rapidly. Looks like I will have to do as you did @jamiewednesday . I've never formatted a card out of the camera though - can you do this on a Mac and which file format do you use?

I actually managed to get it to downgrade without formatting - and just leaving the card with version 1.4 in and retrying. Phew

Cool, did you have issues with 1.5?
Yes, I was conscious that animal eye AF wasn't working as well as I was used to when using my rented 70-200mm f/2.8 RF from @StewartR at Lenses For Hire this morning. Got some great results though none-the-less but lots of missed shots.

Does anyone charge their R5/6 via USB-C and can you recommend a charger? Thanks.

It comes with one doesn’t it? I actually just use my MacBook charger on it, or if I’m driving and want to top it up on the way, I just use the in-car usb c charger cable I have

Nope, not even a USB-C lead. The canon USB-C charger is ~£120!!

There’s the traditional charger included but I’d like to be able to use USB when I’m on the move. Using a laptop is a good idea. I’ve tried a few chargers that I already have, but I don’t think they deliver enough power. It would be handy to have something that charges both the camera and my phone in one unit to save weight and space in my bag.

That's odd.. my R5 definitly came with a USB C lead..

But from what I've tried, all USB C cables work, even when just USB powered. However, I've just used the MacBook powerbrick (Original and third party) and it seems to work just fine.

Ok great, that’s good to know. Right, I need to go and check the R6 packaging…

So it essentially does not come with the R6 sadly! However, any USB C cable will do for sure. I've even charged my R5 off my MacBook pro while I'm in work (and it certainly charged it fine)

Link? Does it do both 4k 120p and 8k without limit *bar the heat?
I've had no problems. Just tried again with the Agfa 512 CFExpress for 1 minute clips 4k 120 and 8k raw and no problem. The write speed is rated 1400 MB/S.

I have an Anker USB-C PD power bank which can charge a R series camera, but you have to be using genuine Canon batteries for the camera to accept the power input.

Anyone been lucky enough to get an R3 yet? Seem to be as rare as rocking horse poo at the moment.

Hmm they’re a bit cheaper than prograde and if they do the job, then I’m happy! I’ll take a look!

I can't guarantee they will work for you, just sharing experience and test result. The 256 card is rated with a lower write speed 1200 MB/S. I have a Sony Tough rated 1480 MB/S and have not noticed any difference in performance.

I haven’t tried but did have a very brief go with one last week. A travel pro tog received his and handed it over to me to try. Nice piece of kit. Larger than the other R’s clearly but doesn’t feel noticeably so in the hand. Certainly lighter than the 1DX.
Eye control focus is neat, waaaaay better than my old EOS 3 as you see the little yellow circle dart around the vf.
High frame rate for you too.

Was it one this one you're using? Thanks.
