Just picked up a 7D this week as an upgrade on my old trusty 400D , I mainly shoot extreme sport and the antics of my loon springer spaniel , Love the night stuff too when the clocks come round

One of my first attempts , Now back to my instruction booklet lol

Picked up my new old 7D the other week.

I purchased this new last year, sold it to a mate a few months later to fund the purchase of my 5DII and had it back off him a few weeks back after selling my 40D :D

Got my first chance to take it up Cadwest Friday along with its new found friend the 100-400 L.

Looking forward to getting the new firmware on it now.

Read on here somewhere it's the 7th August??

Anyone downloaded/ installed the new firmware yet? I've not had a chance.

Just done mine - it was quick and trouble free.

I find the easiest way is ....

Download the upgrade file to your PC

Copy the upgrade file to a freshly formatted CF card.

Insert card in camera and scroll to Firmware version in the menus.

Once the new firmware is detected on the card you'll be prompted to go ahead with the install.

Just make sure the camera batteries are reasonably charged or you're connected to mains power before you start the install. Loss of power during the install can be catastrophic, and would need Canon to sort it out, but that apart it's pretty straightforward.

It's a very good upgrade - well worth doing. You'll just need to reset the date and time zone btw.

Just done the firmware update on mine, took about 3 minutes to install:)
Will be using the camera in anger on Sunday at the Btcc race meet Snetterton.
Will see what differences if any the update has made and report back:thumbs:

Regards,

Jeff.

It could be my imagination, but I don't think so.

I have just taken my first shots with my 7D after the firmware update, but certainly in LR4, there appears to be considerably less noise visible. Anyone else notice it?

I used the EOS Utility. Very straightforward. Give it a go.

I don't think Canon are claiming a noise improvement with this upgrade are they. Mind you - it's pretty much a given that Canon DPP raw processing produces the least noisy images, so if you're seeing an improvement in LR4 I suppose it's possible that the upgrade improves performance in other packages. I can't say as I only use DPP.

It's not unknown for manufacturers to sneak in such improvements. After all, they don't like to admit that noise was an issue in the first place. (Not that I thought it was!)

I've seen several people who have actually done proper before/after tests. Here's mine -LINK. There is no difference.

Does anyone here use the new Tamron 24-70 mm lens with their 7D? Was wondering how it compares to Canon glass ? Thank you.

Hey folks, although I'm not a 7D owner yet, I am looking to be. Is there anyone in here that has bought this as an upgrade from the 550D and would consider it to be a good way to go?

Only reason I ask is that as much as I'd like a 5D, having the 7D will allow me to use the current glass I have along with being able to still buy the more affordable lenses out there too.

Also means that my 550D can serve as a backup too should something terrible happen...

If it helps I had the 500D prior to the 7 and have never looked back. Since upgrading to the 7 I feel that my keeper rate has improved and my images are better although some of that maybe physiological.

If asked would definately recommend it as an upgrade.

Still have the 550D as well as the 7D. The difference between the two is like a kids and adults version of the same camera - with extra bells and whistles on the 7D. If you don't want to go FF, 7D is a fairly intuitive and serious upgrade from the 550. Don't expect vastly better image results though - it's basically the same sensor.;)

That's partly why I'm asking really =] I know that between the 550D and the 7D the sensor is basically the same, so the differences if any might be minor. If you don't mind me asking, what made you upgrade from the 550D to the 7D?

Got the 7D and the 5DIII at the same time. Already had the 5DII, but the 550D was the 'first' DSLR which really stayed in the wifes hands. So in fairness, I didn't upgrade directly from 550D to 7D. However, having them both meant I felt qualified to answer your post.;)

Why did I upgrade? Basically, because I could!! :D

A good a reason as any mate ;) I'd be lying if I said that wasn't partly my desire here, but also due to the more sensible factor of needing a backup....although some people could say that it's more my way of justifying what I want to do :D

The 7D will teach you a lot. It doesn't have any of those pre-set (sports/action, landscape, macro etc) modes, so you will need to have a better understanding of setting up a shot properly - which you probably do already anyway. The menus are MUCH more comprehensive. The only downside for you is that the 7D shares batteries with the 5D (II/III) and not the 550D.

I like to think I know what I'm doing =] I tend only to use Av from time to time. Other than that I force myself to stay on manual.

I think the 7D will be a good choice for the time being. Fact is I know there is no way I can afford to purchase the L glass for it, and if I'm going 5D MKII there is little point in getting anything other than those.

If I ever do get one though, whilst my crop lenses wouldnt be compatible, at least my batteries would be
