Canon EOS 7D Owners Thread

I've not used the 1D4, but I had the 1D3 before downgrading to the 7D. The 7D AF is nice but the 1D3 is better.

That's your experience for what you photograph

But to me it goes to show that they are both exceptional systems and one may have the edge in some scenarios while the other will in different scenarios.

Of course it is my experience, the 1D3 was better for every AF intensive use I have. From top level rugby, birds in flight, football, toddlers playing in low light, snap shots etc. The 7D is far better than the 40D and 50D I had, but the 1D3 is just that step up again :)

Calling all 7D owners please read my thread has this AF issue ever happened to your 7D Clicky Linky if so please try tell us which lens and what camera setting IE manual, AV, TV, and so on, it seems to be more common than I first thought

Very happy with my 7D. I currently have the following lenses: EF-S 10-22; EF-S 17-85 IS; 100-400 IS; Sigma 180 Macro; Sigma 500.

Have had no problems. Don't need the grip as I can hold the camera perfectly well without and simply carry an additional battery.

I will never be fully satisfied with any camera until I can shoot as ISO 3200 + with no noise evident in the image!!

If you want a grip for better hand held, get it. But don't bother with orginal one, pick your self a chip one from ebay, as it's just waste of money getting the orginal one.

Some of the cheap grips on e-bay don't work well on the 5Dmk2 with regards to communicating battery information. Given the 7D uses the same serialised batteries as the 5D2, I'd expect possible compatibility issues.

Also, the 7D has a magnesium alloy frame. The Canon b/g is the same - the cheaper ones won't be and if you have a heavy lens on the 7D, an all plastic b/g will move slightly and not provide a solid feel. Additionally, the cheap b/gs won't provide weather sealing.

I've had a cheapo b/g on my 5D2 and swapped it for an (expensive) Canon one due to the issues above. I don't have a b/g on the 7D, but would have to think long and hard not to have an official b/g on that too.

I'm not saying don't buy a cheap b/g off e-bay, I'm saying there's more than cost as a deciding factor.

Not all of the cheap battery grips are the same, they are beeing made by different manufactures and from different matterials. Some of them are made by the same manufacture that makes Canons grips but don't have CANON logo on it. And they way cheaper. Even if it the cheap grip breaks, it will only cost you another 40quid to pick another one. But it Canon grip breaks, paying another 150-200 for new CANON LOGO grip. In my opinion is wasting money.

Not being funny chap, but your listed equipment is the cheapest, lowest or the Canon range, whereas the chap who says be careful actually owns a 7D and a 5D mk2 and has tried both types of additional grip.

And your source for this is....? Just because some Hong Kong Ebay knock-off company says they're made by the same manufacturer doesn't mean it's true. It's shullbit to attract the gullible customers.

Did you buy Genuine battery or Third Party? Done some reading and some third parties are not that good! :\

In what way are they not good (I have 3x 3rd party, two genuine).

Perhaps you'd like to point me at one for the 5D2 (or 7D - after all, this is a 7D thread) where this is the case.

It is only a waste of money if the only difference is the logo. It isn't the only difference.....

PS. Just looked at the box on my 5D2 b/g... It's made in Japan, so is probably from Canon's own production line ;)

I'd be careful buying the 7D grip full stop. If you use the joystick controller a lot and are buying the grip for portrait use, go to a shop and check that your thumb can actually still reach it. I couldn't, so it would be a waste of money for me personally. (I could reach the joystick in portrait mode on a 1D MkIV, but that's a very expensive grip!!)

Yeah i wish canon would make a half height grip with built in rechargeable battery, to make the size a bit more like the 1d series.

Not been my experience....

For the record, I've just replaced my two uniross third party batteries for my 50D, that I bought 5 years ago for use with my 300D. They still work only they give me about 400 shots now when they used to give me 750. I've put approx 120K shots through them.
Swapped them for some 7 day shop ones. So far so good, but only a couple of weeks and around 1000 shots into them though.

Quick question.

On my 7d there is very very very slight movement to the lens when attached. Is this normal. I suspect not but wanted to ask before contacting canon.

No definitely not dose it lock in and do you hear the click?

How much movement and how is the movement.

is the movement from side to side like your putting lens on or off.

Or is it up and down.

Check the locking pin on camera and is it all lens or just one

Thanks its all lenses. The movement is posibly under 1/8 of a mm lens is fully clipped in.
Ill take it in to see what can be done.
Thanks for the comment

Ring them up its not a lot of movement. But tried mine and the lens don't move.

Google canon service and ask them the a good company in stokGoogle h lehmann ltd and speak to them

My lenses move slightly as in a twisting movement, if that what you mean?

I've had this on all Canon bodies that I have owned, it depends on the lens. A very slight play in the twist movement.

Agreed, does this on my current 400D however its doesn't make a difference to performance.

Still waiting on my delivery for my 7D! Trying to find a new camera bag! Argh!

Hi

If you want a grip for battery life, then don't bother. I get upwards of a thousand shots per charge - just get one if you need the extra buttons,

I have a stack of lenses but struggle to get anything sharp!!

Regards

Mike

I can never really see the point of a grip for battery power, just carry spare in your pocket, that said it seems to last a fair long time, and I've managed for nearly a year with just the one, recently bought a 3rd party at an affordable price which works fine.

Guys I don't have one yet (still using the sx20is) so don't know if this is 100% accurate or just a freak occurance but I read on a website if you hold the camera in portait instead of landscape rotation then the batteries apparently last that bit longer.

I noticed this on mine the other day....was a little worried, but everything seems fine.

A little movement is normal - don't worry about it. Every body I have had since my EOS600 has had a bit of movement.

Will we see! Needed extra's anyhow so will work out at £12 a pop anyway.

Just recieved my batteries yesterday, took 7 days from China!, but still waiting on the Camera (8 days+ from UK).

They seem very genuine to me, all Canon Logos look correct, came in correct packaging with the warning sheet. So we will see!

Does the camera recognise the battery and serial number ?

andy

ack you cant answer, you havent got your camera yet :)

Camera came today :) so excited, will go test it with my nifty fifty over the weekend!

Batteries from China work perfectly, no errors/issues when in, show all information on the Battery Info page. So well worth the £12.

The build quality of this camera compared to my 400D is phenomenal! Such an upgrade!

I want to buy one off these battery's where did you Order it from?
