Hi guys, I bought my nephew a second hand Canon EOS 1000D for Christmas, he's only 10 but has a real interest in photography and the 1000D was specified to have live view, which is quite important so I thought it was a good camera for him (I still do).

I was setting it up just before Christmas and couldn't get the live view to work, a quick Google revealed that this was because live view is only available when the camera is set to manual.

I have a Canon 100D and use live view all the time so I was a bit disappointed in this.

Does anyone have any idea why live view would only be available when the camera is set to manual?

This Canon page seems to say otherwise.

STEP I. Preparing for Live View Shooting
1. Set the camera's power switch to <ON>.

2. Set the <Mode Dial> to a Creative Zone.

8. Make sure that the menu display disappears, and then press the <SET> button.
  • The Live View image will appear on the LCD monitor.
  • The Live View image will reflect the brightness level of the actual image you capture.

CAUTION
  • Live View shooting does not work in Basic Zone modes.

Ahhh- I think the general gist is that it doesn't work in basic modes, which was really what he needed for now. As he's only 10, it will be a while before I can even get him to AV and TV.

That's just a shame, I don't know why they've done that since the camera has the capability.

From reading that page, it will work in Program, Av, Tv and Manual modes, can't he use in Program?

+1 ^ this advice

PS digital afteral is like having a computer with a lens attached ;) at 10 I would surmise he has this potential to grasp usage & concept quicker than many adults.

Possibly, I'll have to check next time I see him (he lives quite a way away). It would be good if we could use it in P mode but I'm sure I've tried that. I just want to be certain that there isn't a fault in the camera really.

P is definitely a creative zone mode.

Canon provides two ranges of shooting modes – the ‘basic zone’ (previously called PIC) and the ‘creative zone’. EOS professional digital cameras only offer the creative zone modes; most consumer models include both types.

Basic zones are the picture zones.

That's really great news, I see him in two weeks so I'll show him.
