Canon ef 400mm f5.6

Fast focus, sharp, light, good lens.
 
The ef 400mm f/5.6 is a fantastic lens, its light to carry, great for birds in flight shots, but it does need good light to keep your shutter speed up when hand held, I love mine :)
 
Have just ordered one of these lenses, based on feedback from users, and reviewers.

Plus having other L series lenses, I know the IQ will be excellent.

The plans is to add a Series lll 1.4x TC, to give 560mm at f/8 when required.

I have a 5D MK II so I know I want a good quality lens. The longest I have st the moment is a 70-200 F4 L. So just wanted something a little longer and can't afford both the 300 F4L and this so was thinking this to start with

The 300mm f/4 L works very well with a 1.4x Extender gives you 420mm f/5.6. Image sharpness and focusing speed aren't quite up there with the 400mm f/5.6 L, but they are both more than adequate - and the IS can come in handy on dull days.
 
I have found a good copy of 100-400mm gives comparable (nearly as good) results with a bit more flexibility.

That would imply that many 100-400 lenses are not good?
 
Thanks for all your feedback. I know no lens is perfect in all ways. Was just looking for something to do more nature shots. Even though I know you can use a 1.4 or even a x2 extender I'd prefer not to if I can help it.
 
It really is a super len's sharp with super quick AF Too.

You could use a 1.4 extender to give you f8 which assuming you have a pro body will AF centre spot only, but a 2x converter will mean no AF even with a pro body. I consider a 5d3 a pro body in respect to AF at least.
Good lens, although a 70/200 f4 with a 2x converter isn't massively worse. So a 300 f4 plus a 2x plus your existing zoom would give you lots of options.

It is a superb lens - relatively small, light and inexpensive yet delivers images that are on a par with much bigger, more expensive lenses. I had one for a while but sold it to fund some studio equipment that I needed. I always regretted letting it go so was pleased when I was able to get another one last year.
