Interesting thread on POTN showing ISO performance of the 7D compared to several different cameras - looks excellent actually.

Thanks for that CT. Looks interesting although web resolution is always hard to tell.
I took my decision to pre-order pretty seriously and part of that process was printing the sample shots from Rob Galbraith and The Imaging Resource at A4. The results were certainly interesting.
1. The Galbraith pictures shot at a gig look worse that the studio set-up at Imaging Resource. I would expect that as there is a lot more shadow in the pictures of the gig.
2. I have come to the conclusion that ISO1600 at A4 is pretty good without noise reduction and 3200 with. This is more than enough for what I shoot anyway.
3. Like all EOS cameras, exposing to the right will improve noise response

Have to say that thread on POTN makes us look like we all get on over here!
You do have to larf at 'em don't you!You do have to larf at 'em don't you!
That ISO comparison is certainly very interesting. The D300 @ 6400 looks terrible doesn't it!?
I've just found another sample video from the 7d which has rekindled my interest in that aspect of it... I'm just not sure how usable it will be with no constant focus!
He quoted me 1300ish
"The AF mode will be the same as described on pages 138-144/ You can select [Live Mode], [Live Mode], or [Quick Mode]. Note that continuous focusing of a moving subject is not possible."
That rather limits it's appeal for me!![]()

Yeah I had read that too. But in Live mode, it does perform contrast based detection ([or at least, my understanding of contrast based detection, determining whether a circle of influence is increasing or decreasing] and face detection). If you look at the links I posted a couple of days ago, you can see that it isn't perfect, [but almost as quick as the camcorder I have anyway. ]
Do you mean the Phil Bloom short? I can't see any auto focus going on!?
The live view focus mode on the 50d requires you to press the AF-On button every time you want to focus, it doesn't track. I think the 7d works the sme... not that much better than manual focus for shooting video IMO.
No, there was someone playing with one of the cameras at a show (language sounded Germanic), and they video 'd themselves playing with the video (and live-view). I believe there are two ways of focusing, either with pressing the shutter half-way, or with the AF-ON button. The first is a temporary focus, as if you are going to take a photo, the second appears to be a permanent focus, so long as you don't have quick-focus selected.
I think TBH. we are not going to get any clear answer on this, until we get one in our hands.
As for me, I am hoping that the 7d will be a camcorder consolidation, so having to manual focus is not going to be a major problem. It would be nicer if it does auto-focus, as most of the things I did video, I would be watching with my eyes, and pointing the camcorder in the rough direction. If it requires manual focus, it will require a bit more concentration.
Again, depends on what you mean by track. I think it was a single-point focus/face detect, that was tracked going forwards/backwards, not across the screen.

When are any proper reviews out for this?
Perhaps the way around autofocus, is just to shoot on the smallest aperture, largest DOF possible, like the film above!
Well I don't mind admitting I'm excited - this looks like it could well be the camera I've always wanted Canon to make.![]()
does anyone like the new shutter sound?

..meanwhile, Hitler's found out about the 7D, and he's not happy..

This looks really promising - a field review by the Norwegian wildlife and bird photographer Ole Jorgen Liodden. The English translation is a bit iffy in places, but this guy is clearly very impressed with the 7D - the AF system in particular, which he rates the best he's ever used.

with you all the way ,just wish the shutter was quieter .

does anyone like the new shutter sound?
Does it sound like the 5D mk II, i.e. quiet but almost as if there's a motorwind in there?

would not swop my 50D for one, rather buy glass
