Canon announces EOS 7D ***Official Discussion thread***

You should see what Nikon can do then!

Thats a cut down version Nikon's 51 point AF system that has been in the D300/700/3/3X for now two years...

You think that's good, with the 7d we can now control speedlites via the onboard flash!!! Take that Nikon!!!

.... oh wait :bonk:

Seriously - Canon are claiming this to be the most advanced AF system in ANY previous EOS camera and it's obviously going to find it's way into new 1 Series cameras probably with more AF points, but time will tell, I wouldn't like to say where Canon are going next. This is the first EOS camera ever that in servo focus mode with all AF points enabled hasn't required you to first obtain focus lock with the centre AF point for focus to then be passed to other AF points to keep focus. You can now obtain initial focus lock very accurately with any of those 19 cross type AF points, and where focus passes to another AF point tracking is confirmed by each AF point lighting to confirm tracking is continuing - a huge improvement for action shots along with all the methods you can use to configure the AF system to your liking or to a given situation.

Canon are stating quite clearly that this camera is aimed at sports and wildlife shooters. I'll be the first to complain if it disappoints, but I somehow doubt it.

I know you are very chuffed with your Nikons but I'm not sure what comments like that add to the discussion. Nikon make some great cameras and lenses and so do Canon. However, I know D300 users who have been unhappy with AF performance as I do Canon.

As CT says - there's a lot more to AF than number of points and the fact they are all cross sensitive and the middle one is a "double cross" should really help to aid AF accuracy in difficult conditions. I still stand by the fact that, on paper, it looks like a great camera and I look forward to putting one through its paces.

My 1Ds MkII with its 45 point AF sports 9 cross sensitive points when used with lenses of f/2.8 or brighter and the centre one gives me cross sensitivity at f/4 or brighter.

With the 7D I will be getting access to 19 AF points that are cross sensitive at f/5.6 or brighter and double-cross (+ and x) for the centre point at f/2.8 or brighter.

This means that with my 500/4 and 1.4x extender I should actually get more accurate AF than I get from my 1DsII.

I have to admit I'm definitely being sold by the 7D, my only worry being that I get the 7D and then a 'blow you away 1D MKIV tech specs' is released.

No doubt the 1DIV will use lots of the features and be a more rounded, solid camera. But, I'm convinced it will be £4000 at launch (current RRP for the 1DIII) and thats more than I want to spend on a camera. If the 7D hadn't come along, I'd probably have had a 1DIV but I'm now pretty sure I won't, certainly not at launch anyhow.

Aha, at last. a manual

Brilliant - thanks

But Nikon do offer a further 36 outside of the main group of 15, which is handy for focus assist points or, if you are a gambling man, would like to play with the 3D tracking thing.

However in real life, for anyone with half a clue about photography, it comes down to using a focus point with the focus assist points turned on. I've got it all cut right down to the bare basics to a) make it consistently perform and b) keep the selection right down so I can quickly find the right point.

So basically, I've taken most of what Nikon offer and thrown it away anyway :D

But I thought you might like to hear what all the Canon guff on that video means in the real world from the perspective of someone who's had all that for a while :D

Well I'm more excited about this camera than I've ever been previously. It's radically very different - 2 years in development, with a completey new AF system, new metering system, new shutter and mirror mechanism, the first at this price point with twin processors, and unheard of pixel count on a 1.6 crop sensor, along with several other useful features which break new ground for EOS cameras.

I can't claim to be a big fan of the 1080 HD video facility, but check out some of the breathtaking sample videos which are already out there to be viewed. It's going to be in all DSLRs anyway as sure as eggs is eggs and you don't have to use it.

I was seriously tempted when i saw the spec for this camera but sticking to my guns and getting a 5DII as my main body but that doesnt mean i cant lookat the 7D when my 50D dies/gets sold/etc... hopefully by then there might be a 7DII ;)

I'm with you Cedric. For me, I think the "big step" cameras in Canon's history were:

1D - first "high speed" DSLR
10D - first "affordable" DSLR
1Ds - first "full frame" DSLR
5D - first "affordable full frame" DSLR
7D - first "affordable high speed" DSLR

All the various Mk xx, are just iterations of a step change.

Agree entirely with that.

Too late now anyway, I've already sold me 50D. :D

I'm hanging on to mine until the new beasty has proved its worth I have to confess. Not that confident until I've given it a real test. What I do know is that the 1DsII is staying and I'm pretty excited about having the choice of that and a 7D in the bag depending on what I am shooting.

Now pondering a 5DII option as well...

I've still got the 50D till the 7D ships but the deal is done.

And I've forgotten the biggest upgrade of the lot - we lose that poxy silver mode dial!

Yes but we do appear to gain a silver ring on the back dial instead... Do like the new power switch location though. Roll on the end of September!

Its all intresting stuff, I may have to call around and have a look see when you get it, the idea of loosing a 1.4x converter off my surfing setup is really intreasting as the 1.6 crop will near enough gain it back for me, and i gain a full stop back.

Indeed ! Why do they feel the need to gild the lily like that? At least it's on the back of the camera anyway.

Yep.. the implications for the effective length of your lenses is really interesting. Anyone currently with say a 400mm lens would probably be better off getting a 7D then a 500mm or a 600mm lens and it wouild be a sight cheaper.

You're more than welcome mate if you want to check it out.

Or better still we could do a day birding. ;)

Is that an all girl version of dogging?

Sudden, sure. Curious, surely not. ;)

hehe, sounds like we're no longer talking of lack of features, now its aesthetics:banana::banana::banana:

Isn't the 5D MkII only £200-£300 more than this.
Keep your wireless Speedlite control.
Give me a full frame sensor over a 1.6 crop any day of the week.
I'm gonna keep on saving for the 5D. My next stop..... the world of full frame sensor!

Yup. Isn't it great to have a choice...

Keep your FF sensor (I already have one!) and I'll take the 19 point cross sensor AF system

That 19 point cross sensor AF should be brilliant for wildlife.
Cannot wait for the end of the month when it should be available !!!

Yup, should have mine before the end of September - like a kid waiting for Christmas! It's the first Canon camera to excite me since the 5D...

This page is worth a look.

I've been thinking of buying a second body but I was also thinking about buying a camcorder (just had our first baby) but now I'm wondering if this would be suitable and kill two birds. Oh decisions, decisions...

Yes, I am also considering the 7d as a kinda camcorder replacement.

BUT at the moment I do not use the camcorder much, maybe an hour whilst on holiday, so it is more of a consolidation for me.

ALSO, as your movies are going to be a lot more important than the type of thing I take, one thing that you may wish to consider, is that the auto-focus on the 7d (in movie mode) may not be as fast as a camcorder.
Whilst in movie mode, the camera is forced to use contrast based focusing, or, make a 1 second gap whilst the mirror moves into place for standard focusing

Hasn't come up on Camera Price Buster yet .. so where are the best deals or are we going to have to pay £1699?

I would definitely want to see some real world examples of the video before making a decision.

Has any one asked Kerso about his price?

I do not need a 7D, I do not need a 7D, I do not need a 7D, I do not need a 7D,I do not need a 7D

but I do want one :help:

Looked at Stuart's site they are now £1599... although I see his offer...

This is straight out of the 7D user manual..

"The AF mode will be the same as described on pages 138-144/ You can select [Live Mode], [:-) Live Mode], or [Quick Mode]. Note that continuous focusing of a moving subject is not possible."

That rather limits it's appeal for me! :(

Interesting thread on POTN showing ISO performance of the 7D compared to several different cameras - looks excellent actually.
