Hi all,

I'd like to buy a spare battery for my 7D, but remember some bad stories about buying cheap alternatives for my Olympus kit. There were some alternatives which were a little cheaper and still did not present such a high risk of damage.

My own experience with the Oly kit was that there were no problems with the clone batteries, but I didn't buy anymore after reading about the possible issues.

The Canon LPE6 is around £60, and alternatives range from < £10 to £49.

What are your thoughts/advice/experience?

Thanks in advance

I paid a tenner on ebay for a battery and charger and it works very well onmy 5DII. Remember you need a charger too as the canon charger will not charge the aftermarket batteries.

Hi Chaz, I bought a couple of Photix batteries and charger off ebay for a very reasonable £15.50 + postage fo my 7D, so far have been very happy with them and currently using in the grip alongside the original battery. Have used them on their own as well with no problems.

The unofficial ones don't show the battery charge and then there is the argument that they don't last as long and are more liable to blow. I have the proper Canon battery as a spare, it's not cheap but i felt it was a good choice.

But then as others have said they have had no issues with 3rd party batteries so each to their own.

I use Phottix non chipped batteries with no problems in my 5D2 other than no battery display.

I reckon that one on ebay must be dodgy, It looks like a genuine Canon battery and doesn't mention whether it can be charged in the origional charger.

We need someone to chance it.

I've used Peelplus for batteries in the past and had a collection of BP511's from all over the world. I only ever had one duff one and that was dead out of the bag.

I now carry 4 Phottix batteries just in case one pair go flat ( I use a grip )

According to the supplier, it can be charged in the original charger and will show charge level on the camera.
I've ordered one (£20 all in !!) so I volunteer as the guinea pig.

 brave man  looking forward to hearing the outcome of this

waiting patiently for the results oin this! I have a grip for my 5D and got an extra original battery, wouldnt mind topping it up with 2 more batteries that show charge. To some it might not be a big deal but dont want batteries gonig dead at a key moment in a shoot!

Umm I tried to buy several of these, but it quoted me 20 USD per battery for S&H.. so 4 batteries = 80 USD for S&H .. :cuckoo: I sent them a Q to clarify :)

Call me a sceptic, but I can't help but think that these aren't Canon OEM batteries at that price. That doesn't mean to say that they're no good, but I'd be very surprised if they're the real deal.

I'll be interested to hear how those that have taken the plunge get on as I'll order some if they're any good.

So they basically put the price of the product into the shipping cost as they are still asking me 30 USD each for them. Shipping from china costs PEANUTS, you can get free shipping for 5 euro products from there and I don't mean envelopes but boxes.. But in this case they're giving me trackable EMS as a discount.

No, I don't need 8 batteries. But I have 2 friends with 5D IIs and one with a 7D..

Trev, please let us know when you get yours what they are like, there is cheap and then there is cheap tat! i rather not have the latter!

I have ordered one of these a few days ago ... They have been dispatched .. so i will let you all know when they arrive ..

Rog

Ok , Mine is here .. I had to make the grove a little deeper .. It is the bit with the + - on .. Where the battery pushes in at the bottom it was a case of sharp thin knife .. and 10 seconds work ..
Camera reads the battery so they are chipped ..

I have used Hahnel batteries with great success previously, don't know if their version of the 7D battery is chipped or not though.

how long does it last? worth it as a backup?

Well i had to buy one today,in the end £60 canon one.Its only money LOL, 180 milliamps more than the cheap one at £50 :bonk:

Battery just arrived from Hong Kong, currently charging ok in proper charger.
I'll keep you posted.

Ok, seems battery was already mostly charged.
In camera, shows full charge on camera display.
So far so good...

Mine arrived today, more or less fully charged. If its a fake, they have done a very good job of it, with the exception of some Chinese writing instead of all English on the blue data plate, the battery looks virtually the same as the original. The outside back of the original has the Canon brand name stamped on it, but the new one has 'Li-ion BATTERY PACK' instead. The packing looks like Canon packing and printed predominately in English. Multi language instruction sheet included as well. I wont stick my neck out and say it is original Canon, but a darn good copy if not.

It charges fine in the Canon charger and gives battery state readings in the camera so is presumably chipped. At worst its a good copy that will be a useful backup, at best, it might be original

I havent run it down so dont know how good the charge is yet, but so far I am pleased with the cost of £20.00 :)

I've fully charged mine, took it out with the camera for a two hour jaunt with the dog.
Took about 10 minutes of video, 200 or so shots some with fast multiple shot mode, battery is down one block to three blocks on the display.
Camera was left in standby.

On the battery information page it states:
75% capacity and charge ability is three blocks.

So, not bad for £20 all in.

I'm going to fully charge it and place it in the battery grip with the supplied battery later.

Both cells in the BG-E7, battery info states 99% for each and three blocks capability.

Genuine or 3rd party? Answer: Yes it is

Has anyone tried 3rd party battries in a 550D?
Should we trust the manufacturer to get it right for different models of camera? or are some better for certain makes/models?

I hope that makes sence

received mine today.

They are definitely 3rd party. They come partially charged. They are chipped and do display battery status in the 5d2.

I've yet to charge it, but so far so good. :D

I'll post later how long it lasted compared to the original

Well I've bit the bullet too and ordered one. If it's okay I will order a second.

Even at £20 ish they are significantly cheaper than Canons. It was only time before the Chinese reverse engineered the chip.

Hopefully more will follow and the price for an origional will tumble. However somehow I doubt it :D

:) I think we all know the answer, but for the price they seem ok and do work. I tried mine and it looks to have a similar capacity to the original.
Value for money ..... its good by me
Only time will tell if they have a good life.
