Canon 5Ds & 5Dr

The ones I saw are on our Mac in the shop at Park Cameras where I work. Sad life eh!! :)

The 51MP 5DS ($3,699) & 5DS R ($3,899) are high end studio and landscape cameras. Think medium format applications where large or finely detailed prints are required.

These cameras do not replace the 5D Mark III per Canon USA video.

These cameras are positioned against the high megapixel full frame bodies like the 36MP Nikon D810 ($2,997) & 36MP Sony A7R ($2,098).

Canon USA mentioned medium format uses for the 5DS & 5DS R so here are the entry level medium format bodies by year.

2010 $4,500 40MP Pentax 645D
2014 $8,497 51.4MP Pentax 645Z

Now, why the drastic price difference? This all goes down to sensor size as shown below.

The Sony, Nikon and Canon uses a full frame sensor with a dimension of 36x24mm while the Pentax and other higher end medium format cameras tend to use a sensor with a dimension of 44x33mm or larger.

6X6 medium format film is included for comparison.

WEX have both cameras up for pre order. 5S is £2999.00 5R is £3199 ( body only ). Would be interested to see the difference with and without the filter, although according to the video on WEX site it's not a removed filter but a second cancelling one has been added (?) .

It will be the poor man's "medium format" solution. 645Z has just a little bigger sensor, yet it costs double and lenses are very very dear. I haven't decided if I get either at some point yet. Let's see 5DIV and maybe, just maybe there is something FOVEON like around the corner?

That should be just like D800 vs D800E, and there was some difference giving the E advantage in almost every way. 5Ds should look like 7D II or 760D at pixel level, and 5DsR - somewhat sharper...

Foveon is a very interesting technology I would agree.

I'd reckon medium format edging it due to same number of pixels on the sensor but spread over a larger area still having the edge as well as higher end glass.

No AA filter can be a bad thing, I conciously chose D800 over D800e to control moire. I shoot a lot of modern architecture and moire can be a b****r with patterns you see on these buildings. If you fancy shooting weddings/fashion etc and patterned/woven clothing are in the frame, minus AA filter you may well see moire that wouldn't be there on the body that has the filter.

Yup, I'd like to see a Foveon sensor, I HAD HOPED THAT THE 7D2 would have that (cap locks a mistake!!)

Foveon technology is only an advantage at very low ISOs, it's simple physics.

That said, for landscapes and studio work, low ISOs are the norm.

...but as I understand it, Phil, better dynamic range?
Yes. At low ISO's. Which makes it awesome, for a few people. But most of us use our cameras at higher ISO's regularly.

A cursory glance at the specs suggests Canon have really lost the plot. An upscaled 7dII sensor is no alternative to a Sony 36mp sensor.

There's interesting stuff with the new AF sensor, but high megapixel at low ISOs makes it a landscape and studio camera, and not an improvement for anyone else.
only if the DR is up to scratch.

so in other words this camera is only useful for studio proffesionals printing billboards where hardly anyone prints blillboards now.

landscape toggers want DR!!!

In terms of DR the 50mp Sony mf sensor is ment to be massively better than the 5d3, heard and seen it from phase one webinars, and mf glass is ment to be a decent step up from 35mm glass, you might need otus level to compete or Leica or Zeiss, and then you still have a smaller sensor...

I am quite a fan of Sony cameras now. Been looking at both the A6000 and A7 for traveling etc.

I am very interested in this camera. It makes a lot of sense for me in my situation. No funds to buy one yet, but hopefully one day.

I've heard there may be an A7000 coming soon so hopefully this will drive down the price.

Have you guys found that Sony a7s have a very clinical output?

Bokeh not creamy, Auto focus a hit and miss, zeiss lenses only good for landscape and not the best for studio stuff? Those are my observations anyway

Surely the bokeh is down to the lens anyway??

Well I have the FE 24-70 f/4 and its just not cutting it for me

Would be good to see an example of the bad bokeh if you've got one?

that and the distance between subject and background. F4 is OK, F2.8 much nicer...but if you want better, get a prime with F1.2-F1.4 etc

Yes, but I thought he was referring to the "quality" of it, ie, smoothness (as better lenses have curved blades and more of them). That's what makes the bokeh 'creamy' as per the other poster, not the body.

I'm wondering what they could improve over the 5d3, that most enthusiasts would see a benefit from. More MP would equal more noise, which many aren't happy with. Personally Ive been happy with mine for normal viewing

More dynamic range.

No gimped sd card slot speed or go with two cf slots instead.

Touch screen.

WiFi

A stop or more iso performance.

-2ev af points.

Built in radio transceiver for use with 600rx flashes

I would like it if they made it just like the sony a7r..but with faster AF ;)

after spending a little time with the a7r...the canon gear has to go.

I've got the 5DSR in my sights as a possible upgrade route, however not at the full RRP. Does anyone know how long it took for price reductions to appear on the 5D3? I'm hoping that in a year or so the 5DSR might be down to the £2.5k mark, or near enough - am I being wildly optimistic?

I'm hanging on for one, may have to look the grey route...

I've been waiting for the 5d4 for a while now and hoping it would cover my occasional wildlife needs too but I'm not sure the S is going to cover it for me. Might have to wait for the mark 4 which is supposedly later in the year...
Rumour has it that the Mark IV might be delayed as Canon thinks the Mark III is still selling well. Super annoying as I don't want to invest in a Mark III knowing that the Mark IV is just around the corner
