Canon 5D - new model?

I will wait a while before making a decision about a new 5d model. If there are worthwhile improvements over the 5d mk ii then I'll shell out the money. I will wait a few months until after the release though as new releases always carry with them a silly price tag.

It's been quite a while since the 5d II release, so hopefully the upgrades will be significant.

I wonder when the release will be if there is a Mkiii. Why have Canon pulled out of Focus? (no pun intended but lol) Maybe becuase they couldnt put up with all the talk of the mkiii? Maybe someone would let slip that there isnt going to be one? I would of though that the mkii still has a very good earning potential for the company as it stands and with the credit crunch happening world wide it would be prudent to stick with current products and release when the economy picks up?

Just some thoughts

Also people talk about probelms with the mkii. Seriously what problems? I dont have any concerns with mine except for space on my picture server!

Great thread to read thus far,

Think im giving myself a hernia trying to find a release date though, maybe i should just not look since there really is no release date yet :D

Go on then, first to reply gets my vote - do i buy 5D II (when i can afford it in april) or wait for 5D III?

Si

I should have the funds for a mkII in April / may so am going to get one then. I was going to wait for a mkIII but that could be the end of the year. So, having all that money burning a hole in my pocket would do my head in. I reckon I will sell the mkII once the mkIII price drops. Either way I look at it I will still be in the full frame club fairly soon.

Si, do what I am doing, makes sense.

Big ten four fella! Mk II it is! I'll have the cash at end of April as well, just gotta decide new or used now.

Cheers fella :-)

I think we will see better weatherproofing, possibly more MP (although I hope not), better higher Iso performance, auto AF in Video mode, integrated flash control (as per 7D), perhaps a few more fps, bigger buffer in RAW and a better rear screen, but not enough "advances" to steal sales from the 60/7D market.
1DS will be going in a diffeent direction in my view, bigger sensor to take on MF at larger printed image size etc.

Matt

I'm pretty sure they'd love upselling people from the 60D to the 5D :p
I'd imagine their main issue is sufficiently segmenting the market without losing sales. The 60D and 600D are way too close together, kind of like the D3000/5000 seem to have been, and they might be wary of doing the same to their more expensive bodies. If they made the 5D too good, it'd destroy their 1Ds sales, but they can't NOT make a 5DIII because then people would just buy a D800 instead whenever that's out. I'd imagine they'd make a 5D3 that's a budget 1Ds3, and then do something 'different' to the 1Ds4. I'd imagine there'd be a decent chunk of the market willing to buy a medium format 1Ds4 if Canon could get the lenses together for it.

If and when the MKIII is released this may possibly lower the price of the MKII so if you can wait......... :)

This thread has been such a good read. I am so interested by all the comment and speculation - it's fun!!!

Thanks to all participants :)

Really - any more information you can give me as to why please? :help::thinking:

The 60D is much bigger and more rugged / heavier with a larger viewfinder, better AF, more fps and much bigger buffer for continuous shooting. It also has the extra dial on the back for changing settings, switching between photos etc. and the top LCD which is really handy.

As far as I am aware, the sensor is the same so image quality should be very similar. I was originally going to buy a 550D (again, very similar to the 600D) as a crop body but the 60D felt so much better, I went with the more expensive model.

The 7D is a step up again with better AF and a huge viewfinder but is about as heavy as my 5D, and I was after something lighter so I gave it a miss!

Whatever you do, handle the bodies first, even if you don't buy there and then :)

Not sure I can wait lol :D then again I have got an open uni course to pay for. I've got a few weeks to wait anyway but ill prob still get one next month. It's the only real chance I'll have money-wise.

Can't wait for the real news about the 5D III though, getting bored of the rumours now :(

I still don't think we'll see a replacement for the MkII until late summer / autumn.

Thank you so very much. This has been interesting to read. I will certainly take the time to handle the cameras. The 5DII is an extremely robust and excellent camera. Highly recommended to anyone. HOWEVER, I am still intrigued and will take a look at the 5DIII when it arrives.

b****r. Just as i thought id made my mind up im considering a 60D or 7D now :(

Chocky - I would handle several models first before you make your move, alternatively you could hire your choices for a week. Just a thought. :)

The rumors on equipment will always be about. Rumors of a D700 and D300s replacement for example have being going on for a year. There will always be something newer and better, just enjoy it while you can and go with what you like. The 5dMK2 is great btw ;)
