Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

Hi Bepop

Thank you i had a look on Flickr looks like you have the hang of the raw ok now, keep up the good work

Allan

Many thanks Allan. I'm looking forward to improvingÂ….. hope! :)

Apparently edz there is a peak in a meteorite shower on 3/4 January - but may be best before 10pm when the moon rises. (I haven't tried any astro photography either, but have a copy of Stargazing 2013!)

Thanks for the heads up Bebop, will give it a quick do and see what I can get :) Don't want to get too used to it, it's too cold, and I get bored waiting for the long shutter speeds lol.

Going to take the plunge and buy a MKIII in the next couple of weeks... just trying to decide what glass to purchase as my 17-55mm f/2.8 will become redundant (currently using a 7d).

What zooms are people using on their MKIII? I've looked at the f/2.8 24-70mm for both Canon and Tamron and there doesn't seem much difference other than price between them (I started a thread about it ealrier today), but have I forgotten or missed a better option? I mainly shoot weddings and portraits and have the 70-200mm f/2.8 L and 50mm f/1.4 prime (both canon)

Well the Tamron has VC, in my book thats a huge difference :-)
I too was coming from a 17-55IS f/2.8 on a crop and to me the Tamron is the closest we will get on FF at the moment.
I do believe f/2.8 on a crop is about the same as f/4 on FF though so f/2.8 isnt needed to equal the 17-55 if ive got that right, but its a definite plus point if you do and i got mine as i do have a wedding to do this year, and wanted as much help in low light as i could get.

Thanks for the reply :)

Looks like the Tammy is a good option then... anyone else used either of the lenses?

Really? I thought 2.8 is 2.8 whether it's on crop or not?:shrug:

I just use my 35l, 85l Sigma 50mm 1.4 70-200 F4 non IS and last but not least my 100l.

I'm not sure I need the 24-70 although it would be handy for gig photography in small pubs.

Yeah I imagine a lot of people just use primes mainly on FF bodies but I think I'd find it pretty restrictive... never tried to use only primes but it's an expensive mistake to make if I didn't like it :D

I prefer the length of the 85L for pretty much everything so that was a must when I switched to full frame. Now I've given away my 60D to my dad the poor Sigma doesn't get a look in :(

The only two times I've wishes I had the 24-70 was once in a gig in a tiny room and once in a small pub where I cropped the top of my mates head off :D

When i went FF last year i got a 100 f/2 USM as i wanted to start going to small gigs and shooting some live acts. I never got around to the gigs but its now my fav lens of all time.
I just find something about the 5DMKIII and primes that appeals to me now, but never really did with my 60D. ill always have a zoom lens or two but at the moment i hardly use them and they just dont appeal to me like the primes do (and i dont even have any L primes)

I agree with the general theme of the discussion. My first DSLR was a 400D and I thought a 50mm would be a good idea as it was the "standard" lens for previous film SLR's. I bought it without really thinking about it and then found the length didn't really work with a crop and rarely used it. I've gone FF now and love it to bits!!

Pete

Totally agree with you there Pete!

I never pick up my 450D anymore, I was on holidays recently, and took a photo for a family using their Canon, it was a crop sensor (teaching me I need to look through the viewfinder), and I could barely see through it lol... really spoilt with the 98% (or whatever it is) viewfinder on the 5D3!

PS: He shot on auto, I was dying to switch it to manual and add a bit of fill in flash hehe.

Hi, good choice on Camera. you will love it.

My advice is to read this thread, and some of the many other (1000's) threads around the net while you are waiting. We all have our own way of setting the camera up and im pretty sure every way possible has already been talked about. Once you get the camera im sure you will have more specific questions.

I had my first proper shoot last Saturday morning with my 5D MK3, overall very pleased, had what seems something a bit odd happen, right or wrong I use the focus on an eye, half press then re compose, whilst focusing using centre spot only the red square stopped lighting up, it was still focusing as I could see it lock in, but no red flash from the focus point, if I turned away from the model and pointed the camera at a black poster that was on the wall the focus spot flashed as I would expect. Any ideas what was going on ?

Do you mean it flashed each time you half pressed it? If so thats the way it works.
Im not sure what you mean by "still focusing". Do you mean the focus was locked in or that the focus was adjusting itself, as it does in AI Servo.
The AF point doesn't stay lit like it does on most of the other Canon bodies.

Hello Dave, thanks for answering.

I could see it was focusing as it went sharp when button half pressed, but for some reason when I half pressed although I could see the image come into focus the af point did not flash at all. Just took the camera out of its bag to give it a try, centre af point lighting up every time, maybe just an odd combination of light or conditions I was shooting in, I cannot see why it would affect it, I was shooting in a rectangular room with two windows to my left, it was quite a bright day, shooting with the natural light they gave. Here is one of the pics in the room.

Terry, I'm pretty sure there's an option in the menus somewhere that says "light up red when in dark conditions" - not in those words. Have a look in the AF menus.

Andrew, that lens is great isn't it! I was amazed the first time I used it too, thought I was going to cut myself it was so sharp :)

Thats a great shot Terry.

As Edz has said, there is a setting called VF Display illumination. Its set to Auto by default. This will mean the VF wont always light up. You can change it to ON and you will always get the red flash when focus is achieved (other than AI Servo of course).
Its under the pink AF menus, right at the end IIR.

Mine showed up today, very happy upgrading from the mkII

Grip will be here tomorrow.

Mine arrived today!!

Just need some free time to have a little play!

Interested to hear more about peoples experience with the AF system, looks a bit complex to start with, but sure it's simple once you break it down a little!

Rob

The AF system is complicated but relatively straightforward to use once you get your head around a few things. Of the six 'cases', I generally use the first one but the others get used depending on what's in front of me.

Here's an example from last week that really pushes the AF...

Have fun with it... It's a great camera!

That is excellent which AF did you use and did you tweak it? I like number 2 at moment.

Hi
I have just bequeathed a 5D Mark III from a very dear friend. Moving from a 40D, been working my way through this thread and trying to decide om a grip fot it. Looking at these two:

Hope links work.

Any advice on the difference or quality would be much appreciated.

Thanks

hi

i have had my 5d3 for 2 weeks now and used my 400 f5.6 and 70-300L with out grip.

i have found the 5d3 to be bigger than my old 7D so no grip needed
