Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

What does that mean Dave?

Pete

If you have registered the batteries in the camera (via the Battery info part of the menu) you can de register them. Im assuming this wipes all the info the camera has about them.
It was just an idea and certainly something i would try although its a long shot.

Thanks for the info Duncan, thats good news.

This is the second time I've done this test.
Last time was sat on a Welsh mountainside in the Mach Loop waiting for fast jets, and I got the same results but didn't write anything down.
It does need confirmation though...

Maybe if you insert a slow SD card it affects the CF write times.
I've not tried that :)
I've also not tried inserting a slow CF and seeing if it affects the SD write times.

I have a question about having two cards in the camera, and although ive looked around the web im not sure ive found the answer.
Im well aware of the SD slot slowing the write speed down if both slots are used for writing, but does anyone know if this is true if im just writing to the CF card, but with a SD card also in the camera?
Im guessing it shouldn't as there isnt any SD card access going on but i cant find confirmation of this.

My plan is to use fast a fast CF card only for day to day shooting (i know i said i wouldn't but the slow buffer flush with SD is annoying me) but keep the SD card in as a precaution in case i forget to take the CF card, and later to run Magic Lantern from it.

Thanks for any help.

Correct, it is not an issue as long as you are not trying to write to the SD card.

Forgive me Dave, I haven't got a 5D Mk3 (yet!! ;) ).

Does having to register batteries mean you cannot use third party batteries?

Ah right, i had forgotten who i was originally replying to.
You dont have to register the batteries, its just a feature that helps keep track of certain bits of info that might be useful. The Canon batteries have a chip on them that can hold certain bits of info, like how many shots have been taken since the last full charge, % of charge left etc, and the camera can read these. Put the battery in another camera that also has the battery registered and it shows the same info. Quite handy.
This isnt exclusive to the 5DMKIII, its been around on the cheaper cameras like the 60D for a while.

Thanks Duncan and graphilly, ill get a CF card ordered now.

Thanks Dave and graphilly.

Also.. does anybody know if I can use my existing 50D remote shutter release on the MK3?

I.E. are the sockets the same?

I use the old remote from my 5Dc as it has the same connector, never been a problem for me.

On a similar note, I have a remote for a 60D, is anyone aware of an adaptor that will allow me to use it on my 5DMkIII?

That was going to be my question as well. I've got two wired remotes for my 60D.
I have seen one for the 5D on Amazon for £1.99, considering how little i use them i might go for that. Saying that, using a wireless remote seems to be a bit easier with the 5D, so I might stick with that.

I'm really loving the 5D3...

Do you have a link for that? I've searched but can't find one.

I prefer wireless too. I try to minimise movement as much as possible on the camera as much as possible. During long exposures it's not good hanging around holding on to the lead or placing it down during the shot. It's also not great occasionally dipping it into the sea. The wireless remote covers all of those negatives for me.

I have got mine on wednesday (panamoz did great!)... Whaaaaat a difference comparing to my previous 400d! It's just outstanding camera. I finally start to like my 85 1.8 lens. I didn't have chance to go out with it yet just tested it at home chasing my 1 year old son :). I cant wait to see how it works on a proper photo session...

Sorry, only just seen your post. No, i didnt bother bookmarking it, i just typed a few relevant words in to Amazons search box and it was one of the remote's listed.
Ive been out twice now with my wireless remote and will stick with that. Although i still have to reach around to the front or side to get it to work its more convenient than having to plug and unplug a cable IMO.

bucz. Good news. Welcome to the club. I wish i had kept my 85 1.8. As with my 50 f/1.4 the 85 wasn't a lens i really got on well with on my 60D, but i have a feeling it would have been outstanding on my 5D.

Does anyone here use a Canon 100 f/2 lens. Im very, very tempted to get one as im going through a Prime is best phase at the moment.

I'd not heard of this lens - looks great!
It is so small and discreet for a 100mm, could be very handy.
I could only find one user review and no in depth reviews from the usual sources I check with (didn't look too hard), but the user review draws a favourable comparison with the 135 f2 which an awesome lens.

Part of me is thinking that it is too good to be true otherwise everyone would own one.
I can 100% recommend the 135 f2 though!

Edited to add a link to my 135 f2 impressions thread.

Ive seen enough good reviews to know its a fantastic lens. Have a look on Photozone and The Digital Picture.
I think a lot of people would overlook this in favour of either the 100L or 100 f/2.8 Macro.
It seems very close to the 85 f/1.8, although its slightly better made. Ive seen these going second hand for around £225. I'd like to get one as i have a wedding to do next year, and quite fancy doing some small pub/club gig photography and i think this would work well.
I dont tend to buy a lens for one specific reason so i need to come up with enough uses for it before getting it. Im nearly there.

I would also love the 135 f/2 but i might find its a bit long as a general lens (like i did with the 85 on my 60D.

Dave, I see you have a 40mm 2.8 pancake... I've been tempted with those, how do you find it? I've got a 50 1.8, wondering if there's any point in getting the pancake too.

I really like it. I got it because I needed a very small lens to go on my 60D so I could put it in my suit bag. I wasn't expecting too much but I found it to be sharper at f/2.8 than my 50 f/1.4 is. Focusing distance is also closer so while not macro it's easier to use when sitting at a table for instance.
Edge to edge sharpness is spot on, even wide open.
It's been years since I used a 50 f/1.8 so wouldn't like to comment on what's better but I don't have any problems with using it instead of my 50mm. Only slight negative is the STM system is a bit slower than USM but its still very useable.

Yeah, good timing. :) Got mine from DigitalRev, no complaints at all. Would definitely use them again. Thinking of 600EX and the RT

Did you get a printed manual with your camera? I also got mine from DR but there was no manual. While I can understand that it was probably in Chinese so they took it out my mate got the same Camera from One stop digital and he got a proper English printed manual.

Not the end of the world.

No printed manual, just link to online one. Which I like better, because I never have opened the printed manuals before. Always read them on my computer. :)

Yeah, that's what I got as well and I too prefer to read on my ipad.

As sad as it might sound I took the manual and a Kindle book on the 5DMKIII, both on my iPad, it to hospital with me the other week. They made for a good read and I can out fixed and full of new knowledge lol.

I got mine from DigitalRev. Came with the full English manual and the uk charger which I wasn't expecting. Great that it did though.

You can buy the manuals (inc installation disc) from Canon UK's printers for about £20 if you want the real article.

Thanks but I work for a printers so can print it out myself if i wanted to read a paper version.
I was just wondering if mine had been taken by mistake, seems not.

@digital. Maybe the different companies source their camera from different places.

I might sound bit harsh, but I think printed manual is just waste of paper. Anyone buying such high level digital camera will have understanding of how PC works to read it on the PC (or print one if they prefer to waste paper/ink). :)

That's odd. My 5DMkIII from Panamoz came with two manuals, English and Spanish, yet both DR and Panamoz supply from Hong Kong.

That is odd, but guess they source it somehow different than DR. :)

Mine also came with UK charger lead. :)
