Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

Just came across something interesting

I second shot a wedding at the weekend with a mark2 and a mark3. I just went through the shots I kept and looked at how many I kept from each camera and pretty much it was even. I thought I would get more keepers from my mark 3

Thats in stark contrast to when I have done 2 toddler shoots and 75 to 80% of the keepers came from the mark 3. At the wedding the subjects were mainly still and so I didn't have to rely on the much improved focus of the mark 3, so i got just as many keepers as my mark 2.

During the toddler shoots I got so many more in focus with the mark 3 because kids just move around so much more. I think if I was doing weddings as my main earner I would probably have just stuck with two mark 2's.

Question:

With the LR4.1 update can anyone tether yet?

The bar comes up, states 5DIII but the camera states busy when you press the button..

Am I being a Mong or have I misread something along the line?

On a brighter note, LR4.1 reads the CR2s now..

Question - Does the focus point not light up red anymore when you achieve focus? I use that to tell me it has hit focus rather than the beep.

i'm afraid not, Ray. You can turn on VF illumination, but it's not quite the same, all the focus points light up.

It turns out that 64G SD card is plenty as back up, it can hold 1600+ photos in RAW. Plenty for a day's wedding when shooting with 2 cameras.

Mine does. I had to set it that way though can't remember the setting, will look later

The big day is here and I picked up my MK III this morning - thanks Kerso!

I took a few shots in the house before having to leave for work. I did not own the MK II and have upgraded now from the 7D. I love the soft touch wheel - however when the shutter releases it is quite noisy and sounds very mechanical. Is that normal? Probably is - but just thought I'd check.

Can't wait to get home tonight to take it for the proverbial test drive :)

I don't think my 5dII does when in AI Servo mode.

yes VF is the one you want. it depends on what focus points you have visible when focussing, if you have them all visible then all will flash red, but if you choose the third option in "AF point display during focus" then only the selected focus point is visible and flashes red

The shutter noise is a bit strange but you soon get used to it. Silent mode is awesome though, in a silent way...

I've only chosen crossed points visible.

I have (probably a silly) question: when I look through my viewfinder I can see a smaller second view at the bottom below the proper view finder. Is this normal?? I really have to position my eye very carefully not to see it - and I find it quite distracting to be honest :(

I know what you mean, it is a mechanical clunk sound and silent mode reduces this somewhat but still louder than my 500D.
I'm going away next week to put it through it's paces with plenty of long exposures and mirror lockup shots.

A smaller second view of what? The VF image?

Definitely not normal. I just tried to recreate anything like that and couldn't. You may well have a problem there.

Yes - it is the same as the VF image - just a lot smaller and darker - just below the actual VF image. It is almost as if I can see the mirror, if that is at all possible??

It sounds like a reflection of something, can't think what though.

Where did you get it from? I would suggest it is worth exchanging as it certainly doesn't sound normal.

I got it from Kerso - just sent him an email to ask about it. Really gutted as the Jubilee weekend in London is the perfect weekend to take the new camera for a spin :(

If I position my use well towards the top of my 5D3 viewfinder and look down I can see the 2nd image right across the bottom, it looks like the mirror. Same on my 5D2. But if I position the view find correctly, namely with my eye in the centre it is not visible on either.

Same on my MK2, but only because I have looked for it, but with the eyepiece extender on it disappears. I don't think it is a fault.

I don't think the 2nd "image" is a fault you are just seeing another face of the prism. I see it too if I really try to, but if I keep my eye centered on the viewfinder it is fine.

Hi all

Thanks for checking in on this. I just noticed that I can see it on my 7D as well - although not as obvious. I must have been looking through the viewfinder funnily.

Phew - I feel so much better now :) Let the photographing begin

Still nowhere near the 90mb/s of compact flash cards.

Quick google Class 10 cards are 10mb/s

Well don't buy cheap cards then :naughty: I have in my 5D3 90mb/s CF and 95mb/s SD I'll confess it may be the other way round  but that's was you get if you by quality, and that doesn't have to be that expensive either if you shop around  I only use Sandisk Extreme Pro cards

You shouldn't have to be careful not to see it, quite the opposite.

I have to really struggle to see anything like it in the mkIII. Not sure how you would look through the viewfinder funny unless you eyes are on stalks. They aren't are they?;)

Well my other passion is Mountain Biking so seeing as I have not been riding much this year I thought I would give the old girl a clean and plan to hit the trail this Monday.

Shot with the 5D MKIII and EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L MKII.

shot a whole bunch of images in raw on my new mk3 using a 16g sandisk and could not download as they were corrupted. message came up 'some data missing'
wondering if this is a fault with the camera or card
the card has been in use for some months before without any problem

any ideas

Well there have been no reports of any issue like that, that I've seen before so I would say it's the card, stick a different card in and see what happens with images of that

Owning a 5dc prior to buying the mkIII I always hankered after the micro adjust feature as the 85mm below f2 always seemed to just out and was very frustrating. Now I own the mkIII and it just locks on every time even at the outer focus points!!!

So my Q, how many of you have/or not needed to micro adjust your fast lenses with the mkIII..?

Did you reformat the card in the 5d3 prior to use?

Hi

I am a little curious, when you say you had more keepers due to the focus, I only use single centre point focus, so would that make a difference to me, or does the focus system kick in all the time. The reason I ask this was, because I was advised at a course I attended to use single point focus at all times....

Cheers
