Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

I think Canon have doomed us initial owners as all we are going to get are questions if ours are one of the first batch and oh, does yours suffer from the dreaded exposure issue when you take an image with the lens cap on?

Anyone who buys a MKIII or any camera does not do so just to shoot a lens cap. WTF.....?

I once took 500+ shots of the my lens cap with my mkII. Admittedly by accident, I had put in a bag still switched on in the boot of the car and something managed to roll and activate the shutter.

Maybe I'll upload them to Flickr one day.... ;)

Despite the "light problem" I would never hesitate to purchase one of these beautiful cameras if I could afford it, I tend to work with light, light & a tad more light. As far as I've come to kno about it, no ones had any realistic light faults with these new cameras.

Lol

The thing is, is it a problem?

In case this hasn't been posted-
The fix is to return camera to canon service centre after the 10th May
http://www.canon.co.uk/Support/Cons...faqtcmuri=tcm:14-925652&page=1&type=important

I haven't received mine yet, as I'm not in a hurry I've said I want a later serial number not because of the non issue just because when I resell it. Agree if I had already got mine I wouldn't bother to return it till needing a service.

Does anyone else detect a slight hint of sarcasm in Canon's response on this?

In particular...

* Some examples of a dark environment are as follows:

1. When the body cap is attached

2. When the lens cap is attached

ie. Don't take photo's with your lens cap on... :bonk:

You said the magic words... "the room was lit".

Any light coming through the lens will swamp the minuscule amount from the LCD backlight and so there won't be a problem.

If you can wait that is fine, though don't let this none issue put you off if you want one now.

I was following the story over on the DPReview, POTN and Canon Rumours forums. Almost all the people making a big deal of it didn't even own the camera, some were even complaining about light leaking through the viewfinder :cuckoo:. Anyone who was rational and actually had a mkIII didn't see it as a problem at all.

Many have confirmed that the mkII behaves in the exact same way so if you haven't had an issue with that and the way you shoot then you wont with the mkIII.

I suspect that Canon are only doing the voluntary recall as a public relations exercise as so many people have blown it out of all proportion.

My 5D2 does not behave in the same way.

I don't see the Mk3's problem as much of an issue though, even if you do shoot in a coalmine at midnight. It only affects the meter reading under these extreme conditions, so if you want to use the illuminator, just wait a few seconds for it to go off before you shoot.

Yep, sarcasm well deserved. But we must not forget that to specialist lens cap photographers it is a big issue that could effect their livelihood and reputation !!

:plusone: no issue here, the only way canon are getting there hands back on mine is if it has to go off for an issue/service

Matt

:agree::plusone:

OK, fair enough, truth be told these things shouldn’t happen on a piece of kit costing £3k but thats life. NASA shouldn’t put a telescope in space with a defective focusing mirror but they did because it was designed in imperial and machined in metric. The army shouldn’t put troops behind enemy
lines without being able to make contact, but they did because the wrong chips had been installed in radios.

Worst case scenario is that someone will really really need a 5D3 that can be used on the dark side of the moon with the lens cap on and so they will have to send it to Canon first. At least it won’t require millions of dollars and 2 space walks to fix it and nobody will get killed or tortured in an iraq cell whilst they are waiting.

Perspective

Moving on from the light leak stuff has anyone used the 5D3 with a 100-400 and a 2.0 teleconverter?
I have the camera and lens and I'm looking at getting a 2.0TC3 but heard there were some issues at F8

Can anyone confirm or deny?

This will only work in manual focus....

I think only the 1d will reliably af beyond 5.6

Would you know what the MkIII TC offers over the MkII version in this scenario?

If you happen to be travelling in the area, with a little haggling a 5D3 body (a along with a 16gb sandisk extreme sd card, card reader and a fitted Canon screen protector) can be had from an official Canon shop for less than £2000 in Kuala Lumpur.

Any news on the bg-11 I miss having grip?

Any news on the bg-11 I miss having grip?

Nope, I'm on the mailing list to be notified as soon as DR have them in stock  I too am missing my grip

The details of the BG-E11 release date are to be found here:

http://cweb.canon.jp/camera/eos/accessary/detail/5261b001.html

OK, for those of you who are a little rusty on your schoolboy/girl Japanese, Canon are saying Late May for a revised release date :shake:

How can Canon develop a £3k camera but take so long to produce what will essentially be a reshaped 5D2 grip

Mark

So is Kerso's stuff being from the states and like Kerso, DigitalRev also offer warranty support

Matt

I'm really desperate to order a 5D III but something is holding me back from ordering an import. Am I worrying unnecessarily?

Does anyone know roughly when UK suppliers will be receiving stock?

I only have experience of Kerso personally, but I would say that you have nothing to worry about with him.

Give one of the bigger ones a call, they should have some idea. I guess there will be back-orders to fill though.

Well I was more than happy with the service of DigitalRev, the important thing when ordering from overseas suppliers would be to pick a reputable company

Do yourself a favour and get it from Ian Kerso http://www.flashcamera.co.uk/canon-eos-5d-mark-iii-digital-camera-body-only/ He imports direct from the states, Canon will accept them in UK for any warranty repair and you will save yourself a load of cash.

He sends them to you from his place in Scotland and they arrive within 24 to 48 hrs. I have bought almost all my kit from ian and we are talking about an awful lot of kit. :gag:

The UK suppliers do not have any stock?

If that is so once UK suppliers get their full quota and pre orders are completed we will see some competitive discounting from them.
