Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

Had a good look round the menu's and thought a few snaps while its still new connected to my light gathering Lens

I wonder what this will say in 12 months time

The shutter count is the number of shots taken on the battery before you have to recharge it.

Cheers Chris - thats a beefy lens too - which one is it?

mind posting a couple of images when you've had a real play?

Ta.

Lens is Canon 200mm F1.8 which I have had for a long time now
on a different note took the 5d3 out today for the first time... was head scratching last night
'where can I go midweek' which will offer me something decent to point the new beast at
not wanting to go to the local lake for the obligatory 'duck' images decided to go to the local Tennis club who were having a tennis tournament on

so thought as it was my first time out with it - I would go armed only with my sharpest Lens 200mm F1.8

which was a mistake as sat next to the courts the focal range was not really suitable:bonk:

the first thing I noticed was that the on the 5d3 the focus point in the viewfinder does not light up when focus is achieved
which my other 2 Canon bodies do so found it strange at first but soon got into the swing of things

the other thing that is immediately apparent is that my 16gb card only holds about 486 raw files now

The autofocus is very good I cant say its better than my 1dmk2N because that is also excellent but both are light years in front of my 40D which I have always thought that servo and autofocus is miles behind the more expensive Canon offerings (and rightly so)

anyway I shot about 300 images in the 3 hours I was at the Tennis club and its not until I got home just how useful all the extra MP's are for cropping in a lot and still having a file size bigger than my other two camera's have with no cropping

anyway very happy with the camera and still not had time to figure out the autofocus settings which in the manual takes some wading through

so here are few images from my very first outing with the new Camera - please bear in mind I should of taken an extra lens as was pretty limited stuck at 200mm for everything but my intention was to just give it a run out to how we would get along

Hi all.

just a heads up. 5d3 is going down in price now

http://camerapricebuster.com/Canon_EOS_5D_Mark_III_Body_pc.html

fantastic news. If you get it from a Hong Kong dealer like Digitel Rev, you can get it for 2.2k.

Come xmas this may go down to 2.6-2.5k and thats when i will bite the bullet :)

i may even bite the bullet sooner if i decide to buy from digital rev.

This is my next camera. no if's or buts. this is THE CAMERA i have dreamed of having that past models like teh 7d and 5d2 just did not cut it for me as i wanted a camera thats a 7d+ 5d2 rollled into one for versatility and longetivity.

once i do get this camera i dont think will upgrade for 10+ years easily unless Mirrorless tech kicks off big time before then or the 5dmk10 has Eye assisted AF(done before in older slr camera's), 20fps or ISO 512000 that is as clean as the 5d3's ISO 100.

Post 548 - under £2k if you want to buy a grey import

Thats a hell of a start - the DoF is splendid

Any thoughts as to why the 5D MkIII isn't holding its price?

Absolute crap, your horizons are way out, all out of focus, overexposed by 2 stops, HDR processing on a tennis court doesn't look good. That camera (and lens) are far too complicated for you, and as a mate I'll do you a big favour and take them off your hands ;)

Morning Les

Just had a play around with the Higher ISO in my house with the curtains closed 90% and to be honest I am staggered how well it handles the noise is such dismal light
I could imagine going out with an 85mm F1.2 lens on in total darkness and working like a 'good un'

This camera certainly makes your F4 and F5.6 Lenses a lot more useful in places they would otherwise not have had a chance
very impressive... and the noise handing does actually blow away my 1dmk2N and 40d bodies

Silent shutter is also a great addition, the Deer couldn't hear me for a change today

Hah, made sure sure wind direction was from them so they couldn't :P :)

Well, still contemplating where to get it from. Kerso is a little more expensive than other suppliers.

And I am also considering selling my 24-105 for a 24-70 2.8 mark 1 if I can find a good copy somewhere. I have seen no convincing info that the mark 2 is worth all that money especially with the lack of IS.

I think the 24-105 would be amazing on the 5D III, no need to change lens

Have followed the 5D3 with some interest and seeing some of the prices in this thread, I'm getting very tempted to order one. Generally tend to hold on to my gear as I currently use a 20D so the 5D3 would be a great upgrade.

That would just be a slight upgrade ;)

What SD cards are you guy using with your 5D3?

I swear i can't burst as many shots as I did with the Mk2. I never even found it to be a problem with a sandisk 30mb/s cards but I found that 3 shots will fill up the buffer with the mk3?!

That can't be right. I have the 64G 45mb/s Sandisk Extreme as my backup writing MRaw.

Well I use the Sandisk Extreme Pro 95mbs and have no issue on burst for full size raw  this is about the best price you'll get that class of card for  http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005LFT3UW/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s=computers

Took this on me hols thought I would try out the noise performance shot at 1600 iso pretty good

Hi

I have a class 10 SD card i can fire 13 full raw files and a sandisk 60mb card 18 full raws never tried writing both at once though it would slow the buffer.

I have a question about the AF system on the 5d3.

If i select just 1 af point, say the middle one and i am in AI servio mode, once i lock on to say a bird in the middle af point, does the af system track the bird across ALL the other points? say if the bird was locked from the middle point and then flew across to the left of the viewfinder, will the AF points from the left side of the viewfinder track and light up keeping track of the bird?

Had my 5d3 a couple of weeks now and have to say I *love* it. Having moved from a 7D the biggest step up by far is the ISO performance.

I regularly shoot at 12800 now and there is less noise than the 7D has at 3200-6400. Really unbelievable.

Regards SD cards, I've got an eye-fi x2 pro 8gb which is great for the wifi feature to iPad/iPhone for Facebook-style shots, but generally I leave that turned off to get the best performance with my sandisk extreme pro CF.

Burst does suffer if you try and use 2 cards at once in my experiences thus far..!

Visited Chester Zoo today with the 5D MKIII and 70 - 200 f2.8 L II, what a combo, very impressed!

I can categorically confirm that the body of the mk3 is magnesium alloy. I managed to polish the corner with one of the rivets on my jeans today (using a sling strap). :'(

Ah well, it has that 'used' look now. I might even pop a strip of gaffer tape over it for that authentic pro look.

Strangely, after an initial slight annoyance, I wasn't that bothered. Guess I realised I'll be keeping this one for a long time.

I used my GP-E2 for the first time in anger today too. Despite the camera hanging upside at my waste on the strap between shots it didn't miss a beat. Every shot accurately tagged.
