Hi all, as in the title wondering how much it costs to replace the shutter on one of these, been mulling a buying one that is listed locally though the shutter count is quite high.

dont replace it, i've got one body at 400k and another at 140k, all of my professional photographer friends are north of 500k, only a fool would replace something before it's broken, shutters can just as easily break at 10k clicks than at 100k clicks
incidentally the cost of a shutter replacement is about 150 I think, the part costs £80 and then maybe 2 hours for a skilled technician to do- it's not rocket science or magic, it's just taking out some screws and fitting the part

As far as I know its £252 + delivery costs if sent to Canon.

Not sure about other places but I think £150 is wishful thinking but I could be wrong.

Thanks, I just want to check if it's not much I might as well do it as I do travel and don't want it dying on me.

Thanks a lot, that is not that bad.

I would never send anything to canon, the repair centre in glasgow is truly terrible
I use a local repair person in edinburgh, if he has the parts in stock he'll just do it same day- and obv the cost is dramatically lower, i appreciate not everyone will have a independent repair shop in their city though

i'd just get a 2nd body as a backup rather than replacing the shutter, just out of interest what is the shutter count,

600k, I might use fixation as they are quite close to where I work and I have used them before

The new one could also die on you after just 20k clicks.... I wouldn't bother changing it.

Whereas I wouldn't send my kit anywhere other than Canon, Elstree.

maybe the service centre in the UK is better, it's notoriously bad up here in Scotland, maybe that's why there's a cottage industry of repair technicians dotted about, idk

just out of interest, what price is he asking for the camera- if it's like 700 then sure jump on it, but, good 'low milage' 5d's sell for not all that much more

and the thing about shutter count is that the shutter is an easy to replace part, so if you've had a timelapse photographer with a body that's done a million clicks, it might have been subjected to less abuse than say a working pro who's put 200k on it but the camera is beaten to hell

It was used for product shooting in a studio and the condition of the camera itself is like brand new to be fair... I was surprised the shutter count was so high

Has Scotland left the UK already?

Canon quoted me £160 as I sent mine to them when the shutter stuck up, but in the journey there the shutter freed and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. It worked perfectly, so they gave it a service and sent it back.

Is OP looking to knock the price down on the camera, or just be aware of the price if needed?

I was wondering if paying £800 is worth it, but I did buy it just now as worst case I will pay £270 which would make the total to £1070 for a brand new camera, as visually it is almost mint...

Lots of other things have the potential to go wrong of course - not just the shutter. That's the risk we take with used equipment. I do think it silly to replace something that hasn't broken though. You could argue that the battery has been running power through the PCB for several months continuously as it's been used for product photography, and the circuit board might die soon, so it might be better to err on the side of caution and get that changed too? (Yes it sounds a bit daft - but trying to show how daft it sounds to replace something that's not broken - that if replaced could break in 20k clicks or less...)

Fair enough I do agree with the point, if it breaks I will change it :) Thanks a lot for the comments all!

If - and it's a big if - If it does break at some point - there is a risk you will lose a few photos - but it won't be the end of the world, and the sun will still rise tomorrow :) (except in Aberdeen) If it's a good price - go for it - enjoy it - don't worry too much - and if anything goes wrong - fix it then.

I'm confused, the title is "shutter replacement cost" and your 1st post is "how much to replace the sensor?"

You're not sending anything to Canon. You're sending it to A J Johnstone & Co Ltd, who are an independent repair business authorised by Canon.

Canon themselves only operate one repair centre in the UK, which is at Elstree in England. But you'll doubtless be pleased to know that photographers from Scotland are allowed to use it. They speak the same language, use the same money, and everything.

buy and enjoy. The whole thing about shutter failures at 200,000 precisely or whatever is just old wives tales. One with just 7357 (or any other unbelievably low number) is almost just as likely to fail, be dropped in the sea by yourself or be stolen.
