Canon 5D MK I 'classic' - owners thread

Hi,

Does anyone know where I can get a screw for my 5D MK1 ?
its one from the base on the left closest to the screen.

thanks

Or alternatively stick with your 24-105 get a 5d and whack the ISO up, the 5d is good for it...

Well, no. It isn't. f4 will never match the shutter speed of f1.4 at the same ISO and there could be times when f4 even at ISO 3200 just wont be enough.

I once did some available light comparison with my 20D+50mm f1.4 against someone with a 5D and a f4 L zoom and the 5D owner was shocked to see my combo producing the better results.

Just payed £380 on Ebay for what seems to be a very nice 5D, complete with grip!

First test!. Using 85mm F1.8

Very tempted to re-buy a 5D, still have all my sensor cleaning kit, which may come in very handy!

Had thought about a D600 but sadly that seems to have sensor dust issues, amazing for a camera release in 2012, wonder what else Nikon have skimped on in producing this model!

Want to use mine for landscape photography and am looking at FF w/angle zooms, had used a 17/40 L in the past, but found the edges indifferent at 17-22mm.

Wondered if any body had used the new Sigma 12-24mm, is it any good? Am a bit wary about any Sigma non-macro lens, should I be with this model?

Curious if using old manual lenses, such as a Zuiko 24mm f2.8 with an adapter gives you edge to edge sharpness?

Apologies, misread original post, thought OP already had F4L zoom!

Well I was thinking of upgrading my 50mm f/1.8 lens for an f/1.4 but curiosity has the better of me, and so I am going to try and dip my toe in the FF waters.

Budget is a little tight, but with a 28mm, 50mm and 100mm I have a nice coverage of lenses to suit hopefully, all I need to do now is find a suitable 5Dc without sacrificing my 40D just yet!

Good luck, I hope you find one and I hope you're happy when you get it :D I was using mine with a 50mm f1.4 today and it was a joy.

Hi woof woof am very close to re-getting a 5D original, think you have a Sigma 12/24 on yours.

If so, wondered what you (or any one else!) thought of it? Any good for landscapes - looking for edge to edge sharpness which was needed a lot of stopping down on the 17/40 I had.

THanks
H

I've had it for years now so it's not the very latest version.

I have no complaints and it seems ok to me but I don't tend to pixel peep so I can't really comment too much on edge to edge performance other than say it's ok for me.

If it'll help at all I'll fit it to my camera and take a few shots at different focal lengths and apertures and either post the results here (but please keep in mind that they'll be via photobucket and that site does mangle shots a bit) or email the RAW's to any address you'd wish them sent to.

Just let me know if/what.

Found one, bought it just got to wait for it now. Can't wait to get hold and have a play

That's a very kind offer woof woof, appreciated.

I found a comparative review on Juza Nature Photography, comparing the Sig 12/24 Mk1, 16/35 II and 17/40. Concluded that 16/35 is best, 17/40 nearly as good and 12/24 last -Siggy falls behind on edges - which matters to me.

The other issue that the Sig only goes to 24mm at the long end- if I get a 17/40 and a 70/200 I'll only need a 'nifty fifty' to cover the gap! 12 mm on a FF must be amazing but of limited use for landscape work!

I'm going to pull the trigger on a 5D being sold on ebay local to me so I'll be posting on here shortly.

I can vouch for that combination.

I just put two A3 prints of these on my living room wall at home and I have no complaints about sharpness across the frame.

Taken at f/8 IIRC

Got my 5Dc from the classifieds here.... Got to say I think I'm smitten already!

Just a couple of test shots in the garden as I'm supposed to be working from home today...one with the 50mm f/1.8 and the other with the 100mm f/2 I own.

I think I'm going to have to think more about the photo's I take in terms of setting up technically rather than just composition which I don't think is a bad thing, it may well teach me more than I'm learning with my 40D which is a bit pop it into Av Mode in auto ISO and hammer away until something good comes.

Is there any way of adding GPS functionality to the 5D? I'm guessing no, but I'm trying to talk myself out of buying a 6D which I really don't need (but want).

Relentless sensor dust issues aside I'm loving Mk1 ownership, 6 months into it now after previously owning a Nikon D90 and various Micro 4/3 kit, I can't imagine owning anything but full-frame now (even though I'm primarily a motorsport shooter).

Having owned my 5Dc for a couple of weeks now I'm so chuffed with it. It's surpassed my expectation. Even the screen which I was a littl unsure of prior to purchase isn't a real problem to me.

I can't decide now whether to keep or sell my 40D. I don't particularly need to offload it, but a couple of hundred or so is always handy!

Decisions decisions eh?!

What's the AF like on the old 5Dc? How would it compare to something like a 450d for speed and accuracy?

Mine will be used for motorsport, there are obviously quicker cameras, but it's quick enough. I had a trial run at the Festival of Speed earlier this year and it was fine, probably not as quick as my D90 (although that was coupled to a 70-200 2.8 AF-S, which was the quickest lens I've ever used) but not slow enough to be particularly noticeable,

Hi, was taking some lovely shots of my sons and nephew's indoors with a Canon 85mm 1.8, when my mirror fell of ! Looks like I'll have to send it in to have the mirror fix done :-(, I assume its still fixed for free ? Just hope its repaired and back to me before Xmas !

Ok thanks for the reply (forgot about this thread).

It's (still) a free repair.

I had mine done at Fixation about three weeks ago after the mirror fell out in the middle of a shoot.

Took a couple of days. I did have the luxury of dropping it off and picking it up on the way to work.

I caved and just bought a 135mm f2, it feels like the 5Dc and this lens were made for each other, I love it.

Ooh nice, a match made in heaven certainly.

I tried a Zuiko 135mm on my 5D via a cheap adapter and it seemed to work very well.

I took my 20mm f1.8 out today for the first time in quite a while. It made this place look nicer than it was, inland mostly it was dark and drizzling...

Yes, Sigma 20mm f1.8.

I bought it when I had my 20D so in them there days it was 32mm FoV equiv. It's a very different beast on the 5D :D

I'm disappointed really, those shots were grabbed on the way back to the car and don't really show how horrible it was at the seaside, cold, dull, drizzling... I didn't get any real keepers.

Evening all, I'm moving from 40d to the 5d, what I'm looking for are advice on things I might need to know?
