o.k.. just tried to clean the sensor on the Canon 5D mk1 and it will not work! it comes up with the message 'cannot clean sensor' when I go into menu and select clean sensor....

luckily it's still warranted for another 6 months (bought it from London Camera Exchange in Manchester), but I bought a sensor cleaning kit and everything expecting it to just work.

just wondered if any other owners have had the same thing and know what the problem is?

regards,

Ben...

I've heard it'll do this if your battery is low. Maybe give it a charge and try again?

I've tried that, there's a couple of things I should mention though...

it's missing the battery compartment cover so you can't use it without the grip...

reading the manual it says it won't work without having one battery but when I put one battery in, it fails to turn on, I'm guessing because of the missing cap under the battery...best bet is to take it back into the shop tomorrow and see what they say for now, maybe they'll clean the sensor for free?

It should work with 2 batteries in the grip, mine does. The fact that it doesn't like the single battery suggests battery condition is poor. One battery is clearly not working so it follows the other may be dodgy.

interesting, I have 4 batteries, 2 of them are official and 2 of them not, the battery grip is also not official canon lol but it works fine, maybe I need new batteries now?

Possible but 4 bad batteries seems unlikely. If still under warranty I would get it checked out.

I'm thinking of selling my 5D depending on how much I'll get for it. I'm not sure how many actuations are on it. The last shot I took shows as 100-6439, what does this mean ? Does it mean there have been 6439 actuations ? Can this number be reset ? When I bought the camera the seller said he wasn't sure how many actuations there were, he thought around 10k.

You can't tell. Only a Canon service team can, which is obviously quite annoying.

I have just bought myself a pretty mint 5d, pretty late production from 2008. I am just trying to decide on my first lens. I have heard good things about the Sigma 50mm 1.4, any other recommendations?

I have that lens, it's lovely on a 5D. Check out the Sigma 85mm f1.4 too, it's even better than their 50mm.

I bought 2 Sigma 50mm 1.4 in Canon for my ex 5D, in my own experience and a lot of internet users experience its really hard to find a copy that focuses accurately in Canon mount, good idea to look used or buy UK stock for easy returns. 5D has no micro adjust so makes it even more of a pain.

I have read this a lot on forums, but I am tempted to risk it. There is one in good condition for sale on MBP, I would assume they wouldn't be selling a dodgy one?

MPB is a good seller, camera bodies tolerances are different so if it works on their 60D or whatever it still may not work on your 5D, only thing you could do is buy it and return it.

Here we go again :D

I've never had any front / back focus issues with any of the following Sigma lenses...

28-300mm, 12-24mm, 20mm f1.8, 30mm f1.4, 50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.4, 150mm f2.8. But of course I could just have been lucky, time after time :D

IMVHO - Buy with the hope that you'll get a good one and in the unlikely event that you don't return it or get it calibrated to your camera (which may be the problem anyway.) Or buy the Canon 50mm f1.4 and if reports are to be believed you've got next to no chance of getting one that'll focus accurately due to the design and operation of its focus mechanism :( :)

Indeed, Ive had BF FF with 2x 50 1.4, 3-4 70-200 2.8 in most mounts. I couldve just been unlucky time after time..... after time..... after time. I think Woof woof is the only person on TP whos been extremely lucky with Sigma.

Ive now got a tried and tested Sigma 50 1.4 on my D700 and its fantastic but Ill never buy another Sigma without knowing its spot on, way to much hassle with returns etc. My last 70-200 took 8 weeks!! to recalibrate. Sigma lenses are great (esp the primes) but imho they need to sort out their QC. Ive never had an issue with any main manufacturer lens before, and Ive had a few of those from each.

Still want the sigma 85 1.4 though :)

Having done a bit more reading, newer models are thought to have had the issue fixed? It's really putting me off with so many bad reports with the Sigma. It's a tough decision as it seems to be a really good lens when it works.

I can't be sure who I've been lucky with as it's just as likely that I've been lucky with my Canon bodies as body issues are very probably behind the problems that some blame on multiple copies of lenses....

http://www.canonrumors.com/tech-articles/this-lens-is-soft-and-other-myths/

At least this problem should go away with time as technology shifts more towards focusing being done directly on the sensor, focusing with something other than the sensor and buried deep within the camera seems a crazy idea these days :cuckoo: :D

I've also never had a problem with Nikon, Voigtlander or Panasonic bodies and lenses :D

My only first hand experience of a "front/back focus issue" was when lending my 50mm to someone who insisted on shooting at f1.4 whilst rocking backwards and forwards :help: and surprisingly consistantly failed to hit focus although I could and did hit the same subject every time  Trying to tell someone their technique is crap is a waste of time and energy.

Pray excuse the little plug. Just picked up a 5D classic, and I intend to use it purely as a manual focus body. Wrote a little blog post on it here.

blog said:
The Canon 5D is an easy camera to fall in love with before you’ve ever handled one. It’s full frame, it’s produced iconic and beautiful images, it’s known as the 5D ‘classic’ as if it were a limited run Jaguar endorsed personally by 007, and it’s capabilities make it an easy 7/10 on the ‘justifiable-to-the-other-half’ scale of hobbiest photographer purchases.

Will be adding a bunch of content on the manual focus experience, extensive tests of the EE-s focusing screen, and stuff on various manual lenses that I've dug up in my research.

Cheers ;).

Not long got my 5D and love it...looking forward to keeping an eye on your blog to see the output...!!!

What's happened with the DVD? In fact, can't remember if it was on DVD or VHS it was that long ago

great timing for this thread as im looking to move my MK1 on soon, but wasnt sure if there was a market any longer for this piece of kit. But........looks like there is after all.
Picking up on the grip question, i have Canon ones fitted to all my 5d's and 5d2's and have found that although they are pricey they are the only ones that fit correctly and actually add balance to the entire unit..........third one party units for whatever reason just dont seem to have quite the same comfy feel to them

Finger waved over the bid now button on a 5Dc on eBay tonight.

It went for £450 plus a bit of postage, have prices dropped that much on these now? Last time I looked they were fetching over £600.

I'm really tempted, just nervous about taking the plunge…

Ok I have to stopping coming on this forum... this thread keeps popping up now and again and now the Full frame one thats floating on the first page... not healthy! Especially at the prices I am seeing! Will be keeping an eye on this thread closely to see what the 'new' owners think :)

I'm looking at a 5Dc at present with a serial number starting 053.

I think this makes it a 2005 model year.

Anything to look out for on these, or should I keep my powder dry for a later model?

You should make sure the mirror has been modified/fixed, if it has and provided the shutter count isn't too high it will be fine.

Thanks, I didn't win it in the end. It was an eBay jobbie - ended up going for well over £500 quid! :suspect:

I ended up picking up a second hand Sigma 50mm f1.4 for a rather good price from Aperture in Holborn. No issues with the lens and really enjoying it with my 5D. Now I am yearning for something a bit wider, I am thinking the 17 - 40 L is pretty good bang for buck, any other suggestions?

How about the 16-35 f/2.8? S'posed to be an awesome lens

I bought one on Ebay and afraid to say the autofocus packed up after a day or so usage. Got a recommendation for a repair website hlehmann.co.uk. At the moment I only use the unit for long exposures so I don't really need the focus but it can be frustrating. The mk II is my go to camera but I would appreciate better functionality to strengthen my back up :-S .

Unless you really need f2.8 it is a cracking lens for the 5D.

Just got back from Kazakhstan. It was my third visit but the other two were in winter with anything from mild to -25 deg C. This time hot doesn't do it justice even though I was told that July and August would be much hotter.

I was invited to go on a fishing trip and it was quite some experience. It was an 8 hour drive just to get to the location then a boat ride to our little island. There were many sights to see on the way but as we were pressing on I didn't have time to take any shots other than the fishing shots. The night time shots are all ISO 3200 f1.4 and I'd drunk so much Vodka that I'm amazed that any came out.
