HI....

I have a 450D,would the New 550D be a Giant step forward in Everything.

All comments appreciated.

Regards:).

I'd recommend going for a 40D or a 50D, unless the video is a really big swinging point. The xxD series is a real step up in ergonomics, build quality and certain features

The full review just got posted on dp review

review

I think they liked it, it gets a gold award...

550D is a very small step. You will get more MP that won't really benefit unless printing A1-2 sizes. There will the same tiny cramped plastic body with a vanishingly small viewfinder, low fps and slow AF - all that for £££. Does video change the game for you? Only you can answer that.

If you are looking for a giant step then look at 5D or 7D / 1-series. Even 40D-50D will be better.

Hi Guys,

I hear what you are saying.

Yes all in this range are cramped in fact uncomfortable to use even though my hands are on the little size.

I am not even bothered about the video,or that the print size that could be achieved is huge.

No the one thing that does is I am not a PRO by that I mean Infrequent user. I am stuck right where Canon want me.

I could afford to go up to a 7 but cannot justify to myself in doing so.

So the crux is do I keep my 450 or in the future change to the 550.

Thanks.

Regards.

I'd seriously recommend holding a 50D. It's noticeably larger than the 450D, and SO much easier to hold. There's somewhere to put your little finger for starters, better balance, and you get better ISO, a few more MP, and a host of other features.

Would my lenses be ok to use with it 70-300 and 18-200.

Yep, no worries at all. It's tall all Canon EF and EF-S lenses, as well as all the Sigma, Tamron in canon fit. It's only full frame cameras (5D and 1Ds) that you need to worry about lenses fitting or not.

I can see only one problem with it call me picky.

Seems to be a lot of fiddly buttons under the Screen.

Sorry.........

Regards;).

The 550D isn't much of an upgrade.

If you're going to leave the 450D get maybe a 40D or a 50D. It won't cost much more than the 550D but you will get more camera for your money.

Or just do what I'm doing and save up for glass, tripod, remote etc.

O.K, I'd suggest going to a shop and getting a hands-on experience. If you want a bigger body with the buttons not under the screen, maybe look at a secondhand 5D? You'd need to sell the 18-200 as it wouldn't fit, but maybe it would suit you better?

Why do you want to upgrade? Are there features that you're missing, or feel that something is lacking? The 450D is still a capable camera, so maybe some lenses are the way to go if you have money burning a hole in your pocket :D

Hi Chris, thats the way forward I think.

What would be a good all round higher grade lens for the 450.

Well I've had both the 350D and 450D and find both of them more than capable of producing excellent quality pics.

In fact for a good many photographers far better than most are capable of utilising properly.

It took me almost 5 years to feel that I had finally outgrown the 350D and I used to be a pro photog.

I upgraded to a 450D as an interim step to a 50D because funds didn't run to a new one but have more or less decided to go the whole hog and go for a 5D MkII instead simply because of the sheer quality and the fact that I will not feel the need to upgrade for a very long time.

But I do feel that a great many newbies feel the need to upgrade because they seem to think that a better(?) camera will somehow make them better photographers.

They don't seem to realise that almost any camera will produce great pictures in the hands of a great photographer but no camera will make up for poor technique and/or lack of skill.

And neither will Photoshop.

Better to learn how to take good pictures first and only upgrade when you feel the NEED to upgrade because you have finally outgrown the camera.

Hi Chris, thats the way forward I think.

Well I have a number of lenses but a reasonable one is the 28-135mm IS USM.

This can give good quality pics at a very reasonable price - and if you buy S/H on here from someone with good Itrader recommendations you can save quite a bit of money as well.

Totally agree Peter.

Could you come round and Tutor me.

Regards

Lol, stalker alert?!

Seriously, there are plenty of ways to learn, a good local camera club would probably be a good start!

I wouldnt say a big upgrade no

But for most of the comments slaggin off the 450D, for some reason. It is a great camera and I know a few semi-pros who still use it and produce awsome shots.

Unless you using your picture for professional reasons or it is your job, and need 'the best' I would stick with your 450D, and invest in some decent glass first, and learn to use the full potential of your 450D.

I would say glass would improve your pictures over a new body, and I would deffinately say its mainly down to the skill of the photographer.

Only real way to learn is get out there and take some pics, pick up a load of info from people on here then go out and use that info and see where it leads you.

i can vouch for the canon 28 135 too, it is a good lens at a reasonable price.

I did this a few weeks ago and it helped me alot to understand a little more about my camera. Go out pick a subject and mess around with different settings write them down come home and see what the results where, this will give you a better understanding as to what does what where if you know what i mean.

I like my camera and i love learning about it and different technics.

But but.... it's cramped, and the viewfinder is so so so small...

I mean, you can't possibly produce usable images unless you're using a 1Ds and an L - everyone knows that right!!11

Yes and it fits my small hands and my 20/20 vision just fine lol

the body of the camera has no effect on quality of image or how good the user is.

People have big and small hands and different taste to how a camera layout suits then

I'm not sure if you detected the sarcasm but that's exactly what I was meaning. I think there's nothing wrong with the 450D, my hands fit around it quite well (really well with a battery grip) and I'd say they're fairly average sized (my hands). The viewfinder being 'vanishingly small' to quote that guy who's name I can't pronounce, sounds odd to me, if you want a small viewfinder try looking through a PnS viewfinder - THATS small - if it even has one at all!

I'd much rather have a cheaper camera body and a better glass than a 'good' camera body that I haven't a clue what to do with.

The thing I find ironic is the people with the most gear snobbery in here (i.e., this xxxd bodies suck attitude) are the first people to state 'oh but yes the gear makes no difference its the person behind it who takes the photo' :cuckoo: make your minds up :gag:

Yes I seen the sarcasm lol couldn't reply properly as using my phone and the touchscreen does my head in!

Totally agree though

Robbo,

(I would say glass would improve your pictures over a new body, and I would deffinately say its mainly down to the skill of the photographer).

Or is that Photoshop.

Sorry I am not meaning to be Bitchy.

Regards.

Photoshop and good lenses are two different things.

Sorry not understanding what your aiming at here?

down to the photographer as in skill level knowing when setting to for what situation your in, capturing the right things in the right composition...list goes on.

Photoshop help only a little, as the saying goes your cant polish a turd.

The picture has to be good to start with and Photoshop can just 'tidy' or 'neated up' little bits and bobs.

You can fix barrel distortion in photoshop, and other lens abberation. Noise, exposure to some extent. Not DOF. Maybe that's what she was getting at.

Still, I'd much rather have nice lenses than crap ones and just use photoshop to hide that.

Photography is all about finding a good picture, composing it, then taking it. Nothing to do with Photoshop! Glass helps in composure (focal length) and creating depth of field (aperture range) and overall image quality.
