Having read a few reviews on the 550D, I think its a well worth upgrade if you can afford some higher end lenses to go with it.
 
I doubt it is worth an upgrade from a 450D. Highly doubt that.
 
I've never considered going for another xxxD as an upgrade. Why would you spend upwards of £600 on something that really is only better (and slightly) on the feature range? Upgrading is about getting the better camera, such as the xxd range, then xd range. Why pay for something that is pretty much on par with what you already have?

I have a 400d, but wouldnt consider the 550d a worthwhile upgrade, its like going from a Fiesta with a sunroof to one with aircon. You wouldnt bother paying for a whole new car just for that. I'm looking at 40/50d for my upgrade this year.

If I were you I'd expand your lens range first. What are you interested in shooting?
