Hi All,

I'm looking into buying a Canon 55-250mm IS MKII.

Can anyone be kind enough to post their experience of this lens please? Are there any major differences between the MKI and MKII?

What are the following like,

Build quality?
Image quality?
Value for money?
Alternatives within the price bracket? Which is £220 at Jessops online.

Thanks in advance!

The mk1 & 2 are absolutely identical apart from the outer cosmetics.

Build is fine, iq is fantastic and the IS is very good.

A great lens, but don't pay extra for a mk2 as you don't get anything over the mk1. You can buy the mk1 for about £140 from Amazon.

It's the best telephoto for that price, nothing else comes close IMO.

The only difference is cosmetic!
The MkI has a silver focal length ring, the MkII a black one and there's a couple of other differences in the lettering on the body.
No other differences whatsoever. ;)
Great lens but no way would I pay £220 for a new one, they're available new for around £140. ;)

Edit: Must type quicker!

I second that , I bought mine from amazon for £127 in may last year. Good lens especially for the money, it beats anything else in its price range and probably over it.

Hi
I got a new MkII for £160 from Amazon in October - great lens that saw a lot of use on Brownsea Island shooting Red Squirrels

As above, the difference between the MkI & II is cosmetic, not optical.

I seem to remember reading the change allowed improvements / efficiency in producing the lens by Canon

Have a look at Camerapricebuster site - it's a good site for price comparisons

Also drop Kerso (Ian) a line on here - in traders section - he can normally offer a good price

Thanks for the replies guys! Much appreciated!

Cheers for that, thanks!

I purchased a 55-250 MK II from Amazon (it was actually from Buya UK Ltd but fulfilled by Amazon) about 10 days ago for £141. It arrived in a plain white box with no manual.
Little bit annoyed by it as the order description did not make it clear that it was a white box version.
It was £59 cheaper than actually ordering it direct from Amazon so I can't complain, but if you are ordering from an Amazon seller it's worth checking with the seller if you want the Canon box and manual.

I've tried it on my 600D (although not as much as I would have liked!) and I'll answer your questions with my experiences with the lens so far.

Build quality?
Your info says that you have a 600D with the 18-55mm kit lens. The build quality of the 55-250mm MK II is exactly the same as the kit lens.
It may be plastic but it feels solid enough. The focus ring is reassuringly firm and doesn't drop down under its own weight when being carried. It's not too heavy that it gives you neck ache 5 minutes after carrying it around but it does have a tendency to make the camera swing more when walking!
Overall, I have no gripes with it.

Image quality?
Excellent. Although I've not given it much use yet the tester shots I took at varying lengths I was more than happy with.

Value for money?
Outstanding value for money. If you pick it up for £140ish it's an absolute bargain for the performance it brings. Although I don't have a vast experience with a wide range of lenses I very much doubt that this lens can be beaten on quality for the price.

Alternatives within the price bracket?
None that I am aware of!

I would highly recommend this lens.

I bought one to go with my 18-55mm kit lens. As Rico has stated same sort of build quality and feel to it, no gripes about image quality.

I paid £134.94 posted for a new MKII IS version from eBay back in December which was the best I could find for one. I believe you are able to get the MKI from the same seller slightly cheaper. Worth noting these are white boxed, but seller gives a year warrenty and has high feedback so I went for it.

Wherever you get one from, you won't regret as it's a very nice lens for the price!

Right then! I think sums it up! Just have to pick out a good deal now! Can't wait to get it!

Thanks for the input guys!

I bought one from off the forum second hand and it was £110. When I received it I was over the moon with it, it was like new and the IQ was great for the price. Only bad thing was I gave it to the wife with my 550D and 18-55 IS when I got my 5D2 and I never get to use it now cause she uses it nearly all the time.

I'll swap you my 600D and 55-250 for your 5D2! ;)

You don't want to shoot red squirrels with a canon mate...
I normally use my .22 air rifle!......only metal targets though.:lol:

Mk II version £143.39 delivered on Amazon.
Mk I version £138.95 delivered on Amazon. Both new.
Or wait until you have classifides access then look on here, seen them go sub £100.
Cracking lens though, said I would sell mine when I got my 70-200 L, but can't bear to part with it!
