Anyone experienced metering problems with the 50D? I tend to get overexposure in most shots in AV mode so I end up using compensation most of the time. Thoughts?

Can you post some samples with exif intact?
May sound silly but your body isn't set on spot metering is it.

Might be worth checking that CFn IV-5 is set to 0 (if you have the factory fitted focussing screen) or another setting if you have changed the focussing screen.

Thanks Bob it was set to 2 so I have reset to 0. Will see if that makes a difference
It certainly will make a difference, Steve. The different focus screens have different levels of light transmission and the metering occurs after the light has passed through the screen. The effects of different screen styles (more obviously ones with a prismatic centre) can be quite unpredictable due to the % of exposure assumed across the scene as a whole and whether the chosen focus point is in the clearer region or not.
