Anyone experienced metering problems with the 50D? I tend to get overexposure in most shots in AV mode so I end up using compensation most of the time. Thoughts?

Have you tested this to see if the meter changes from M or TV to AV mode?

Is it a consistent amount? If so how much?

More than one lens affected?

It's overexposing by 2 stops with canon 24 -125, canon 100-400 and sigma 10-20. Seems to be no difference or in manual and TV

Can you post some samples with exif intact?

I use exactly the same combination and sorry can't help you- mine works perfectly and any small issues can always be adjusted in photoshop etc

May sound silly but your body isn't set on spot metering is it.

The only thoughts I have are:

Sticking aperture? Does it behave if you test it with the DoF preview? Obviously lens dependant.

Inadvertent use of exp lock? Is there a chance you've locked exp before framing the shot?

Yes I've checked that and doesn't seem to be the cause. It seems often to be conditions dependent in that if there is strong contrast between sky and landscape it is worse than on a day like today when is sunny and everything is evenly lit

Might be worth checking that CFn IV-5 is set to 0 (if you have the factory fitted focussing screen) or another setting if you have changed the focussing screen.

Thanks Bob it was set to 2 so I have reset to 0. Will see if that makes a difference

It certainly will make a difference, Steve. The different focus screens have different levels of light transmission and the metering occurs after the light has passed through the screen. The effects of different screen styles (more obviously ones with a prismatic centre) can be quite unpredictable due to the % of exposure assumed across the scene as a whole and whether the chosen focus point is in the clearer region or not.
