my first dslr , comes with the 18-55 kit lens, just assembled it, the hardest part being attaching the strap :D
General usage tips are highly welcome

1. Go outside

2. Take pictures

3. Don't use EVIL GREEN BOX MODE! ;)

Only joking! Welcome to the forum!

Have you got any photography experience so far? Then we can give you tips without teaching you to suck eggs!

hehe well only experience is using point click sony w80, breezed through the user manual , lots of things ... im basically going to shoot indoors & people .. perhaps a few suggestions on that will be welcome :D

Congrats on the camera! I'm sure you will love it as much as we do. I do recommend you read the manual just so everything makes sense. It only took me about 30mins to read it front to back, quite an interesting read as well.

It's quite a challenge shooting indoors if you haven't got a tripod or a flash as there's usually not enough light to be able to shoot a photo hand held (usually need at least 1/100 sec shutter time to not have noticeable camera shake).

It's quite sunny here (London) atm, I'd say go outside and use the natural light.

Also I think it's better to start shooting Jpegs rather than RAW initially. Once you have more experience with post processing then use RAW as RAW needs sharpening whereas with Jpegs they are sharpened by the camera.

Good advice which I will take myself. Tomorrow I venture out into the cold with my shiny new 400d.

Congrats on getting your new camera, I'm envious. Bought mine today online and it could be up to 5 days before it's delivered and I can't wait. Hope you have a good time out with it tomorrow and look forward to seeing results of your work :)

Looks longingly in empty corner:( but does manage to stick an extra £300 in the kitty today, towards my D300, grip and lenses.:D

lol got to practice on something right? No doubt the first couple of shots will be pretty crappy, out of my first 200 shots I was only happy with 2 of them. Main thing is to keep snapping, trying out different settings and do a bit of post processing.

Everything will get easier after a while and your photos will magically be better :p

Thanks for the encouragement - and also the links you gave in the other thread.
Tomorrow is about getting out and experimenting. Then upload to my PC and learn from the mistakes. By Sunday I might be taking a half decent image now and again. I will have fun trying anyway :)

oh yes got to love the digital , ive already taken 100s of shots not happy with most of them, trying out all the settings one by one , this is educational stuff.

Congratulations for the new camera...
I buy my 400D few weeks a go with a extra lens 55-200mm.
