anyone use one of these? any opinions welcome,

I've had good results with the 50mm f1.8, but need a bit more width as i'm on a crop sensor i find it a bit too zoomed in.

Or any good alternatives?

Thanks in advance
Glen

Hi I have been looking into this and I might go for the
Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG ASPH there is the site
http://www.dpreview.com/ at the top u have lens database for all models I hope this helps u as for me gave me to much to look at lol

i have been looking onto this lens too. will get it once funds allow. my research and others have voiced this is that you are not going to get L glass quality from it but it is no slouch, well built, probably a little better stopped down a bit.

I was in same position as you regarding 'wideness'.
I had invested in a 50mm f1.4 to take to an exhibition. Once I got there the ability to take pictures in low light was brilliant, just couldn't fit anything in!!

Thankfully Jessops took it back and i bought a Canon 35mm f2. Cracking lens and so light on the camera it goes on all my business trips.

I bought the 28mm when, like you, I didn't find the 50mm wide enough. It's a great lens, with amazing bokeh, although it's sharper from around f2.2 onwards.

is it useable below f2.2? as it would want to use it at f/1.8 or f/2

I was between the Canon 28mm f1.8 and the Sigma 30mm f1.4
After testing both I went for the Sigma and sis not regret it one bit.

What made you choose the sigma over the canon? the bigger f1.4? or did something put you off the canon?

Thanks for all the comments, some more options to research there i think......... f1.4 is very tempting!

I had a look at the reviews and determined that when the Sigma f1.4 is good, it's awesome, as opposed the the generally good feedback for the Canon.

I'm lucky enough to have caught one of the 'awesome' Sigmas but your mileage may vary. F1.4 definitely makes the difference, too.

Not very surprising really. The 50mm f1.4 was probably the most popular standard lens in the 35mm SLR days, although the f1.8s and f2.0s were good, and quite common too.

A 30mm is pretty close to 50mm on a Canon crop camera and makes sense to me.

would be interested to know how these two lwenses perferm on FF, generally it will be shallow DOF so corners is not too much of an option but light fall off and distortion i would like to know.

Sigma 30mm 1.4

Everytime I pick it up I KNOW its going to produce a very nice image.
Everytime I pick it up and use it I am even more impressed than I expected to be!

Cant beat that IMO

Have to agree on that. I was in the op's position a couple of months back. But im glad chose the sigma. Did a lot of reading and all is pointing to sigma for the IQ if your lucky enough to get a good copy.

Just realised the sigma is a DC lens so thats out of the running for me!

I want a fast prime thats wider than 50mm!:bonk: I have a 50mm lens already some times it is just not wide enough!

Well, now that we know you're on FF it makes it a bit easier!

35mm f2 is also a good lens by all accounts...

So if the Sigma lens is a DC lens (designed for crop sensor same as EF-S?) does that mean :-

30mm = 30mm
or is it
30mm x 1.6 = 48mm

sorry for confusion:bonk:

It is a 30mm, it always will be a 30mm, it will never change from being a 30mm :D

On a cropped sensor as in your example it will give the field of view of a 48mm lens on a full frame sensor, it is still a 30mm lens.

The DC bit just means it has a smaller image circle, and would not give a large enough image circle to use on full frame sensors.

Thanks for clearing that up!

I knew a farmer who had a crop sensor, useful at harvest time:D

i'll get my coat........

I bought this a while second hand of here, great lens well built and image quality is great. This has made me upgrade my 50mm 1.8 to the 1.4 for the USM and build quality.

Can't comment much on how sharp it is at 1.8 mind you, i shoot a lot of mountain biking and usually use 2.8 at the lowest for DOF reasons and so i dont miss focus.

you got the one i wanted but couldnt afford it at the time! Grrrrr

Thanks for all opinions, the sigma is tempting, although not sure about the 'getting a good one', don't think i want to spend £300+ and it not be right??

Then you should either buy in-store and test the lens to make sure you're happy with what you're buying, or buy from an honest seller who should say whether it's a sharp copy and whether it has any focusing problems, etc.
I'm gonna be buying the Sigma 30mm 1.4 as well, some point during summer :)
