Yes
I would like both lenses, but can only afford one at the moment. I will be using the lens for weddings and portraits, which one should I buy?

I HAD 24-105 FOR A WEEK AND TOOK IT BACK LAST NIGHT FOR 24-70 ... MUCH BETTER!

sorry caps!

Whilst the IS of the 24-105 is useful you'll probably need the speed if 2.8 more often when shooting weddings in dull churches etc.

Can vouch for the 24-70 too. Why would you want both if you don't mind me asking? They're very similar focal lengths, I wouldn't want to lug both around a bag!

i had both and i sold the 24-105 because the 24-70 is much better in every way. just my opinion though. anyways, i dont think one needs IS for such focals.

I've just traded my 24-105 for the 24-70 and so far think the 24-70 is a much better lens especially with the F2.8 over the F4.
I think there has been another thread about this recently on TP but can't find it anywhere?

I felt the longer focal range would be useful, but based on everyones comments 24-70 seems to be the one. Maybe I'll get the 70-200 f2.8 at a later stage instead.

had a 24-70, sold it as didn't need it anymore then got 24-105 to replace just to cover the focal length in my bag, it's a great lens but now going back to 24-70 now as I now need the speed! :cuckoo:

If you need f2.8 then the 24-70

If you need 70mm to 105mm then the 24-105

Neither is better, they're just different.

hang on.. let me get this straight....

Canon make a 24-70 and a 24-105mm?

sorry.. sarcasm is the lowest form of wit...

i'd be interested to hear where the best deals are to be had for the 24-70 though.. been on my 'to do' list for a while.. and as i've just sold my 'bigma' i can blag it at home that the much smaller canon lens is nowhere near as expensive as the massive sigma one :naughty:

Its a tough one - I have had 2 24-105's and still have one alongside my 24-70.
I love the 24-70, but find it too short on my FF body many times, so the extra length of the 24-105 makes it so hard to do without.
One has to go, but I have no idea which yet...

Lose the 24-105 and buy a 70-200 F4 L IS 8)

I have a 70-200 f4 IS...

My problem is that I need to go from fairly wide to fairly long - ie roughly 24-105.
A second body would mean I could have both at the ready, but selling the 24-105 won't provide enough to cover the cost of another 5d2 or a 1Dsmk4, even if I sell my old 5d classic !

Hmm
I use 24-104 for almost everything
but I also use the 17-40
Great lens aswell but sometimes it too wide (sorry i use a full frame camera)
Hmm that may thro a spanner into the puzzle

inside, portrait, DOF advantage/desire, and flexibility in distance to subject you will have in your described shooting conditions.... I'd go for the 24-70 based on the fact it's a faster lens. BTW I am a 24-105 owner, if you get and 24-70 and don't like it I'd swap :) 2.8 beats 4.0 every time. A f2.8 or f1.4 for that matter can stop to f4 but a f4 lens can not get wider. You may want to consider a prime for your intended purpose as well as IQ will come up with a prime.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but usually the AF points have extra functionality when used with lenses of f/2.8 or faster.

I use a 50mm prime lens which I love. I didn't mention but I am using a 5d classic body. This discussion is really useful : )
