Canon 24-70 f2.8L - Bad copy?

LOL Can't, CC is already at snapping point with the 24-70 :p

Marcel, time for the 50D and Micro Focus?

No, focus adjustment is a band aid, not a fix.

And it doesn't really work with zooms, as very few are par-focal.

QC issues should be fixed at source, not by the end user.

I've had Nikon fix my first 50mm f/1.4 AF-G which could be adjusted by my D700 within specs, but there is a principle at stake.

09:05 and I can't get through on the phone LOL

Nope, still engaged, grrrr.
Have to go out soon too :(

Spoke to Lehmanns. Explained the front focusing, the CA, and the softness, and he was quite sure it's the camera.

I'm taking both down next Wednesday for the 40D to be adjusted, and for the 24-70 to be checked.

sounds like a good answer. hope it is nothing too dramatic:thumbs:

But if it's just one lens slightly out (or within tolerence!) then this is a good fix.
If however it's all lenses then that's a different matter.

I sent my 24-70 off to Lehmanns yesterday for the very same reason, hopefully hear some good new back from them soon, have been quite dissapointed with soft is is compared to my other lenses, have gone back to using a 6 year old Sigma as that's razor sharp!

I was just reading the Photozone review of the 24-70 yesterday and wasn't too impressed. It looks like the 24-70 as a whole isn't the best lens around. Here's a very telling quote..

Photozone said:
Well, I guess everybody has a nemesis and mine is the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 USM L. It took me 4 (f-o-u-r) samples of the lens to get a good one - please note: "good", not a "great" sample. The first three variants showed rather hefty centering defects which spoiled the results quite a bit.

I sent my 24-70 into canon as it was soft. I've still to do proper tests since getting it back. But I'm not convinced yet. As the Nikon 24-70 is razor sharp, it's that piece of glass that makes me consider switching.

Well Marcy

It looks like you have the same problem as I have :(

I did wonder if off centered elements were the cause of my concerns as in some of the fubar images the sharp point is often to the left of where I thought i'd focused.

Friday will be a telling day

Well when I'd booked the appointment etc, and he'd confirmed straight away what it was, I asked him about the f2.8 focus chart images above, and said 'the bits that are in focus are really quite soft', and 'would adjusting this fix the CA?', and he said it may very well fix the CA and that at 2.8, the DOF is a midgies nadger anyway (my words not his).

So I'm slightly confused. Is it just a front focusing issue, or is it both?
I suck at being able to discern the differences. For example, I can't see much CA :$ (I *am* colourblind though).

I would have said from the dandelion picture that it's actually focussing on the grass that is closer to the camera (front-focussing?)

the later pictures seem to confirm this

That's what it looks like to me - front focussing and also very soft.
