Yea, saw that, Bob, be interesting to see if its a new DPP, can't look now as on the move but intend to update all this eve. You done yours yet?.... Or perhaps just one? Can't retro to the old firmware!!! George

Tony,I seem to remember reading somewhere that it improved low light focussing ability amongst some other things that I can't remember.

It's to enable the new functions if you control the camera remotely, Tony.

Hmm, works fine for me, Tony, just click on firmware and you go straight to it????...but if you are on a mac Maverick, you need to switch to mountain lion to get the update.

Just done my body now, will do some tests in the morning....and do the DPP update as well..
 
Quick 1st comment, if you have put your own settings into the 6 AF cases, the update seems to return them to the default and you will have to reset them to your own values.

See my previous comment about 4 posts ago, just set the download to mountain lion, that works fine!!

Come back and let us know if that's ok, but it also works for the DPP upgrades as well!!

updated mine.. gone into custom control and the SET button right hand side half way down have made for exposure inc/dec so now in M i can just press SET and change the comp..for me this means I will probably spend all my time in this mode or full manual.. given the high iso capabilities and me knowing what minimum shutter and apertures i need.. its perfect..


now onto ai servo second image priority.. I have set that to +2 for all my use..i left first priority to equal.. trusting that i can nail the first shot..its the second shot in a burst and subsequent that i need to know is focused so gone the whole hog... cant see it slowing the shutter too much.. does this make sense?


thats the main two for me... exposure comp in M is a biggy.. better focus on secondry image of a burst also important... I dont go much for increased custom options as i seem to have enough.. i am not going to push the excpanded af parameters either... so 2 out of 4 of the updates are very important to me.. 2 or not so much ..

am happy :)
 
hmm was doing some experimenting and did some long exposures... arrrrgh my sensor is manky :( I mean real manky.. all around the edges especially.. As most of my work is done open 2.8 f4 for example..i dont notice.. but f22 i can see just how really bad it is... so

anyone cleaned there own 1dx sensor...real manky ones?


i was always led to believe its a dodgy thing.. one wrong move and your stuffed.. so better to let the experts... but i havent got 3/4 days to let it go.. need it all the time for work.. dunno if cleaning your own is so much more simple nowerdays?

OK bit more detail :)

ORANGE 5 > CUSTOM CONTROLS
Right hand row half way down = SET and exposure icon
SELECT THE VERY LAST ICON ON BOTTOM ROW

Then when in M mode you can press the SET button in middle of large dial and use the small dial to change exposure comp..

OK, NIgel, it took me a bit to sort it, too many glasses of red wine last night..but did it this morning!!

The instructions could be better, I think, but here goes...

Go to custom functions....then page 5 (the one which says "C.Fn5:eek:peration " at the top, scroll down to "Custom controls" (it's where you set up back button focusing, for instance) ...press"set".....using the joystick select "set" (it's the 3rd one down on the right hand column) then scroll to the last option which is the +/- and arrow pointing down, press "set" and there you go!

Then in manual mode and auto iso, press the "set" button and while;e holding it down, rotate the wheel next to the shutter release to set your exp comp.

Is that clear?

A further point, if you set this up, as I did first, in one of the "C1-C3" modes, you need to set it again for the others, and also in "M" mode when this shortcut works in all other modes, so is a quick way to select exp comp.
 
Thanks for the guidance and it's now set up.

Having tried it, I think I must have a fundamental misunderstanding of what it can do for me. I was hoping I could set it on +0.66 EV and then forget it and then for all my shots the camera would pick an ISO that would produce an exposure of +0.66 regardless of what I was shooting.

It seems that when I set the 0.66, what ever the ISO is calculated at to achieve that shot, the camera then moves off auto ISO to the ISO it used for the image

I'm really confused

sounds right to me..if your saying what i think.. I ahve a tendancy when shooting in dark dim to over expose by 1/3 ...so if i set manual and over expose by 1/3 then all my shots will be just that... is that what your saying?

I'm not surprised Tony, Reading it back has confused me too!

Basically what I was hoping for was to set auto ISO, set to over expose by 2/3 and then wherever and whatever I was shooting, the 1Dx would select an ISO to achieve just that, regardless of what the ISO had to be.

It seems that once you set to overexposed, the ISO that achieves that exposure is then fixed. It doesn't stay on the auto ISO setting

I'm not sure I understand your problem, Nigel, it seems to work ok for me?
 
Just dialled in +2/3 and taken 1 shot outside, then 1 indoors, iso auto adjusted to give the required comp...;)

same experiment.. same expected results.. works perfect..

I dont think i would use this so much with any other camera.. but for sports work. knowing a wide range of low to high iso works ok on a 1dx then its perfect for me.. will try it today.. unless its a perfectly clear sky as looking then its just manual.. lets not forgot auto ISO does put you in semi auto and lets the camera decide the exposure.. but got lots of jobs over the weekend.. M+auto iso will now replace TV or AV every time for me..

Just found an anomaly with the new firmware, I think...if I press the "Q"button, then select the "Exposure comp/AEB setting, I can use the rear rotating dial to set exp comp, and the top one for AEB......can't remember what happened before the update? didn't the Exp comp setting work on auto iso?
 
Nigel, I don't know if this is what you are wanting page 325 in the instructions AE micro adjustment orange menu 6th down. I find I need to adjust too +2/8 to get the exposure I like.
 
Well guys, I have sussed out what I was doing wrong earlier.

I have always had C1, C2 and C3 set up in manual with shutter speed 1/1000 and aperture f2.8 and with 3 different ISO settings to cover the changing conditions at a football match. This could be ISO 200, 400 and 800 for a bright day for instance.

Anyways, I digress. What I did was go in to C1 and add the exposure comp settings to the existing settings and save again as C1. What I should have done, was go into M and set all the settings up from scratch and then save as C1.

When I did this, all was ok and it worked very nicely at today's match. Can't wait to try it at the evening game on Tuesday

Thanks to all you chaps above for pointing me in the right direction and helping my haplessness to be overcome.

Once again TP comes to the rescue, so thanks again :ty:
 
I enjoyed that today.. being able to set aperture and shutter and let the auto iso loose... made a nice change.. whole lot easier for sure..

That's always been the case, Tony....it's just the EC that's new.
