Canon 1DX - Official Owners Thread

I meant stable when using a network cable or wireless connection, Tony, as opposed to via USB.

If you are pushing the files to the laptop (as opposed to downloading them from it) then FTP is much better than using a browser or EOS Utilities - less overhead for faster transfer, less battery power drained etc etc. :)

stable? I have tethered before and worked flawlessly

I am going to investigate just using the usb lead to download.. never actually downloaded like that..

Has anyone any experience in downloading locked files only from camera to laptop using lead/cable ?

PS..Thinking... would need to be able to take pics while downloading.. hence why maybe not a good idea:(

Tony

I have now connected the 1Dx to the laptop using a Network cable and using the WFTPairing and using EOSUtility.

Bad news.

1) I can't see a way to download locked images only (something that is possible according to the settings for FTP)

2) You can't shoot whilst it's downloading.

Rob was I going to help you set this up?

Phil may know or can test it.

Even if you can't I still want to be able to connect the camera and transfer images via FTP rather than through the EOS Utility.
Should be able to lock in Camera, then press Set and it only downloads the locked ones.

If I only had 10 images, they will probably download as quick as I can change out the card.

Edit
Tested - takes approx 1 second to download each image.

I'm pretty sure when I tested ftp it would download as I was still shooting but I had it set to transfer every image as I was only testing

You just need to do us a fool proof guide on how to set it all up now Philip

i.e. what ftp server and what setting you use. Then everything you do on the camera to get it working.

There's no way that you can make that happen, because in reality you are shooting directly to the laptop hard drive whilst backing up on the card in the camera. Therefore any shots that you lock, the settings will be on the camera version only.

One of the main reasons for locking is to save in ingest time - which you're already doing! :)

It'll be a bit of a PITA for shot selection, but you pays yer money etc etc.

One of the features of the Eye-Fi card that I really like is the ability to transfer locked shots only. It's a shame that Canon can't find a way of including this in their WFT set ups.

When you give it back I'll sort it out for you.

Have a read here Mark http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=466394

I think it writes to the card and that you can scroll through the images and instead of locking, you press the SET button and it transfers the image. There is a setting on the 1Dx that says Transfer with SET.

I am getting closer but I need a final bit of help from Nigel or Philip.

Yes please.

Can anyone tell me is it possible to change the back light colour from orange to green ? I have a ex 600 speedlite which has got a green backlight which i prefer and would like to change the camera to green, had a quick look in the manual but no joy unless i've missed it :)

You can change the 600 to orange :)

From what i have read the 600 only changes to orange once in slave mode, pitty a i like the green much more

You can have master and slave LCD's either colour Kev....P Fn -02, 03 and 04 to choose.

http://www.azule.co.uk/partners/canon-eos-1dx-buy-interest-free/

I would think you would just divide the price you pay by 24 (months)

There might be an admin charge?

Just to add to this, and possible interest to KIPAX, WEX are now offering an extra £350 off a new 1DX and the 2 year interest free if you trade your old body in.
There are a few dealers offering a free 2nd battery with a new body, WEX wouldn't commit over the phone but didn't rule it out.

has anyone found any use for the video? I really cant understand such an expensive camera.. they go to the trouble of adding video.. and it doesnt even zoom+focus :( just seems useless to me......

I have never once thought about the video capabilities of this camera, let alone use it. If I want to produce a video, I'll buy a video camera
My thoughts entirely, Canon seem to be going overboard on this, why don't they concentrate on giving us a 7D mk 2 and a new 80-400 instead of dual pixel video carp!!

iv'e tried the video side of the camera after i'd worked out how to use the video feature and it is better than my panasonic full hd camcorder video quality wise but no where near as convenient to use it's just too much guess work involved on the focusing side without shelling out for a seperate monitor / mike etc
it's debatable whether it's worth the messing especially for amateur use it is better if you get it right but the dedicated camcorders are pretty good these days

I could do without video on the 1Dx I mean what's the point... isn't it there a 1Dc created for that purpose?.

From all accounts, Ivan, it's pretty much the same camera!!

Depends on what type of video you do. If its family/random clips, then it is not the video option for you, as DSLR AF, and even most CSC AF, isn't quite up to it for video atm. If it is pro quality video, and recorded in the professional way, i.e. short pre focused clips edited together, then the DSLR is great alternative to expensive pro video gear.

The thing is though, the camera would be no cheaper without the video option, and in the case of the Nikon Df, it could even be more expensive.  And just like me with my camera, you don't have to use the video option. ;)

The cost wouldn't be any shaper as it seems that the video feed is taken off the live view feed.

I must have gone one setting too far.. I have never pretended to understand every setting on the 1dx as some go over my head.... Unfortunatly of late I ahve seen some continues shots at oncoming targets go out of focus.. a bit annoying..

I had that same problem a few months ago. In the end I set everything back to factory settings and put my settings in from there and it's been fine.
Theses cameras are mini computers now and I think they get clogged up now and again.

I agrree... thats what I ahve been thinking of doing.. know my way around it enough to set the changes I need that dont effect AF and the like.. hmm ... if i could just set all AF ..is there a list of defaults?

Not that I know of. I thought of that before I did mine but in the end I just went for it.

Tony, if it help, sand i know i shoot Nikon, once im happy with settings i downloaded (3 years ago) them all to a CF card and every 3 month religiously i will do a factory reset on camera then reload the saved settings from the CF card, its sort of like reformatting and doing a fresh install on your PC, now it may or may not be psychological but after a reset and reinstall the camera performs flawlessly.

That sounds like a good idea Gary, I think I'll give that a go.

There's a firmware update due in Jan, with significant enhancements to the AF system.

I think I will save my current settings to a card, do a factory reset, then update the firmware, then see how it performs before loading all my current settings back in

Yeagh gary i always have my settings saved... my worry is.. have i read somewhere to change X to Y and thats whats messing things up.. loading same settings back in wont help :(

Has anyone got a WFT E6A and managed to successfully set it up?.. Headaches all round today... Can get it onto my network, but wont pair on either EOS Utility on Windows or Mac (i read that it states it wont work on Mac on page 43 of the manual, you know that far bloody in... but cant see anything to the contrary).

followed it all the way through on infrastructure just stops at pairing... (no pop up detects it)??.. Kettle on...

Edit: Well after a very long brew it works now shooting into:

Surface Pro running W8.1
Mac Book Pro on Mavericks
Both into the EOS utility with remote capture.

You need to be a bit network savvy here with IP addresses and manually assign IP's. Once set now I can just turn it on and choose which machine (as long as on same network). I would recommend getting an Airport Express if mobile a lot mind which would give you your own network as soon as plugged in.

Now to test Ad-hoc mode...

How used is yours?
317,000 shutter cycles on mine... oooer :)

i will be getting the shutter replaced before may 2014 as i ahve a 25% discount from canon CPS to be used before that date :) at this rate it might go anyways..

Under 15000 on mine, Will out last me :)

It's worth noting that there is some interaction between the new Firmware and DPP/Eos Utility and Canon recommend updating these at the same time.
