Canon 1DX - Official Owners Thread

1dx might be a speed machine - but what are people's thoughts to it regarding landscapes, particularly versus the 5D3? After some views from landscape shooters who use both Thanks

Shadows are much cleaner and can be pushed a lot further before you see the trademark magenta grid. Otherwise not much different. It is a lot extra to pay for cleaner shadows though...

Great that you can dial in exposure comp on manual with auto iso!!-my comment!!

This is badly needed for 5DIII. Auto ISO is frankly useless without it.

Only two things interest me and one only partly

Exposure Compensation in Auto ISO with Manual Mode Set –

I already ahve a pefect workaround for this asigned to a program mode.. so yeagh nice but I aint going to go mad as it can be done easy enough already

Display Protected Images Only –

I deffo like this as protecting images is used so much..

Most of the rest went over my head to be honest.. maybe on a second read ...

Interested in your workaround on the auto ISo?

Interested in your workaround on the auto ISo?

TV mode to set the shutter speed you want
cfn to limit/max the aperture you want (set both to same)
auto iso

the above is exact same as manual with auto iso... set it up and assign to a program mode and away you go one dial to activate :)

because your in tv mode you can then use ec +/-

Display Protected Images Only – Users can now page through protected images only via an option on the main dial. This feature already exists with rated images, and is an expansion of that capability.

As with Tony this will be a handy feature.

I know Gary (Coyle) keeps mentioning it, but Canon seem to have a bazzilion options for customising the AF. I wonder if it is too confusing.

Coming soon !!

Firmware version 2 for the EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera is scheduled to be posted on the Canon U.S.A. website in January 2014.

Heres a problem I cant get past :(

I use two cards and write to both ...thus always ahve a backup...the card in slot two is 32gig so lasts any job and more..

I set PLAYBACK to slot 1

Thus when locking pics it locks on card 1 which is importanmt.. part way through a match i may need to remove card to laptop.. replace with a blank

At this point the camera changes to playback slot 2 :(

Its important that the playback is always slot one and thus the locking always slot one.. otherwise i ahve to keep remebering to check and chage.. slows everyhting down :(

workround?

Ah yes that is a common complaint. I will also be interested in a work around.

Tony - when did you last try this?

I have just done a test and it seems to be working fine. n.b. upgraded to firmware 1.2.4 last week.

Seems to be working as long as you don't close the card door. What firmware are you on and can you check it?

New update Tony.

When I tried it 30 mins ago I was turning the camera off. Suddenly thought oops I'd better check it without turning the camera off and I am happy to report that it is NOT switching from slot 1 to 2

i have had that update for yonks...... so its when you close the door ... well hmmm not ideal.. gotta remeber not to close the door wiht no card in.. not a good thing if your just dropping a few pics on then putting card back.. leaving door open :(

Erm, see details on my post on the previous page, Rob!!

George it was a reply to your post - what I was meaning it is not exactly soon.

I looked but couldn't see a date in your post for when the firmware would be available.

This has always been like this, at least since the 1DIII. The other workaround is to remove the 2nd card to transfer files to laptop.

When you lock an image does it lock it on both cards?

tempting though, especially with the new 2 years interest free offer

Do you know any website where you can see the actual cost? i.e. deposit and payments amounts?

Ah yes I saw that page.

I was hoping for a wonga style, sliding thingymabobby so that I could put down a varying deposit and see what the cost would be.

yeh was hoping the same, would imagine like the above though is it's easy to work out, just deduct deposit and divide by 24

Anyone got friends requiring a second user 1DX Body ? Please point them in my direction in the selling section. Cheers Tug

Requiring a 1Dx yes, money for it no.

Are you giving up the sports Tug and going back to more studio stuff?

Yeah Robin, Like I said in a different post, too many divvies givng their work away is killing sport work. nobody wants to pay, those that do pay a pittance.

so back to studio and probably do a few more weddings. Im gradually reducing the photography and moving back into the same work as i used to do.

Yes I can see that. Good luck.

Is the 1.4 III extender included in your pricing?.......................:coat:

it doesnt lock on both cards :( I need to only transfer locked files... problem is same whatever card you choose :(

You are correct, all actions will only be applied to whatever card you choose as the default card, in your case card 1. If you delete, lock or select any image then that will only occur on the default card selected. The other card will remain untouched.

Well maybe Canon should give us more options in this area rather than a million more ways to tweak the AF.

So .. leave door open.. was rushing last night.. wasnt possible at one point .... Oh well..

The only other workaround is for the odd jobs that I do need to lock.. is to not use a backup.. accept after years and years of not using my dual slots.. now I do thanks to admirable telling me to :) I cant face shooting without..

What happens when you download locked images from the card via a USB cable? Would this negate the removing card process?

The problem with usb is that it is a dodgy connection IMO. network cable that locks in is much better. I have tried it using the Canon tools and it works, but I can't seem to get it to work over FTP which would be a much better option.

I had some success with a 1D IV and a WFT-E2/cat 5 cable using FTP but it was indoors with a good broadband connection.
Not sure how it would work over a mobile network

It wouldn't need a mobile network surely as the cat 5 cable is going from the 1Dx in to the laptop.

All I want is to either to transfer all images or locked ones from the 1Dx via FTP on the laptop to a folder on the laptop.

However Canon support is flippin useless. I would think they would have working example of an FTP server e.g. filezilla and all the settings needed.

This should be easy peasy stuff but again I say Canon are useless.

Why would you need FTP for camera to laptop? seems a bit odd?

In theory it's meant to be more stable for tethering. In theory that is! :)

stable? I have tethered before and worked flawlessly

I am going to investigate just using the usb lead to download.. never actually downloaded like that..

Has anyone any experience in downloading locked files only from camera to laptop using lead/cable ?

PS..Thinking... would need to be able to take pics while downloading.. hece why maybe not a good idea:(
