I've still got to send my 1DX in for the recall
have I got to pay P&P on this ?

Anyone who's had it done have any comments on difference that it makes and or other things to check/ask for it whist its in the service centre?

Does the work for the recall require me to reset all my custom functions upon return ?

Thanks

Ed

Ed, is it the sensor or the mirror?...I noticed that I was getting spots of dirt when I looked through the viewfinder, but the sensor was fine!

When I returned it to Elstree I asked for a check and clean, which they have done FOC, looks fine now!!

If you haven't had the recall done, then I suggest you do as I did.

If you have to do it yourself, it's the same as any other sensor to clean.

I asked specifically about payment for the return and they arranged pickup FOC....a UPS label was emailed to me so no cost.

Your custom functions shouldn't be changed, but just to make sure use the "save camera settings" function to put them on a CF card before you send it off.
Also on return, my file numbering had been changed, due to them I suspect using an unformatted card in my body presumably to check the mechanism.

I raised this, and was told in future all cards would be formatted in camera prior to any test, but I'd put a note in to make sure they do it just in case!!

They also cleaned up the mirror box area and I think my sensor.

Haven't noticed a bit off difference since the recall, however!!

George.

edit..the file type had also been changed from RAW to jpeg..

Where is the best prices for original batteries ?

bloody expensive :(

i bought one of the calumet branded 1d4 batteries for less than half the price of the orig and it's fine
it doesn't register with the camera so no battery information is displayed but that doesn't bother me iv'e had plenty of cameras in the past that doesn't display battery information and it's never stopped me taking a photo :)

I sent my two bodies in today with a request to clean and return for Friday am, keeping fingers crossed and waiting to see how they do ? It's under the re-call banner.

might be tight, Simon, I sent mine in on a Mon and got it back the following Mon.

Give 'em a ring tomorrow mid morning, they should have them by then, and ask them to hurry it up as you need them for the weekend!!(which I'm sure you do!!)

That's exactly what I'm going to do George. The lady on the phone said that the backlog on the recall had subsided. I may be in luck.

I didnt ring them George as I was too busy yesterday but Ive just received and email and also a txt message to say that they are both done and will be dispatched today for delivery tomorrow (Thursday).

Super fast service and sensor clean on each to boot.

I requested that they do a shutter count so I could compare it to 'Focal' but apparently they have been told by Canon Japan not to give out shutter counts on any bodies any more. I asked why but the kind lady did not know the exact reason or wasn't prepared to say.

Im not too bothered as I say, I can check the count on Focal. Im just happy they have turned around both bodies a day earlier than I requested.

.

The mkIV I sent in last yr I asked for shutter count and it said on the paperwork that they dont issue shutter counts... so its been like that a while now but I htink they only just started it when I assked as everyone seemed suprised..

Good result, Simon!!

The lady on the phone did say that it had been like that for a year or so... Perhaps its just me living under a stone !!!

to be fair its not somehting you or indeed anyone is going to be aware of until the need to ask for a shutter count :)

Im not that easily impressed but CPS have surprised me.
Two bodies picked up on Monday afternoon. Emails and Txts received on Tuesday Morning to say that they had arrived and that they had started to process them.

Wednesday afternoon I received a txt and an email stating that both bodies had been modded and that they were going out to UPS for delivery the next day(Today)...4 pm and both bodies arrived back cleaned and modified looking like new bodies.

Very impressed.

Damn good that. Obviously it shouldn't have needed it, in the first place but if they are acknowledging it and fixing it quickly then good.

I must say I've also found them very good, the only exception was when they messed up my 70-200 mk 2 AF, but was immediately put right.
Mind you, we spend enough on their gear!!!..

True George, and after the email fiasco they need to be doing it better than better really.

Tareq, this thread is not meant to be like the similarly named thread on POTN. If you want to show your pics, especially when you add no dialogue, you will receive far better comments if these are put in the Sports forum.

If you look back through posts in this thread, you will get an idea of what this thread is all about

Hi Nigel!

I wasn't thinking for comments, i just posted here as samples from this camera, that's all, and as long you know i am on POTN as well, i've got enough comments there.

If you don't add any dialogue when you post your pics, there doesn't seem to be much point in posting IMHO. How are we supposed to respond?

I see, ok, next time when i will post here i will say something, just not sure what should i say but i do my best to write something about my pics.

I bet Nigel was a prefect at school :)

N.b. He is right of course.

Sure, but if i want just to show as samples/examples and not looking for comments/c/debate...etc, where i should post?

Posting pictures is fine but, It will then be good to describe what you find to be good about the body and, why the pictures posted represent a good sample base for showcasing the camera. ;)

Ok, they are all at ISO4000 or more, we know even with my old 1D MarkIII at ISO3200 i wasn't very happy with noise quality, now with 1DX i can shoot up to ISO10000 and i am happy, anything higher than that will be a doubt quality, i don't care about many saying they are happy with ISO25600, i did shoot with this camera even at ISO40000 and even it is acceptable but never same quality as ISO4000 and lower.

Also that 12fps giving me much more keepers over my MKIII old days!!!

So what else i can talk about this body?!!!

Are these shot under floodlights, Tareq?

Bob

Yes Bob, if you mean Stadium floodlights then yes [4 floodlights columns on the 4 corners of the play field only], good we have almost not bad floodlights, about 2 years ago i remember they changed the lights, it was yellow and weak, now they are white and strong, i can use ISO800-6400 without problems, but i went with higher ISO to use higher shutter speed, those are at 1/2000 if i can remember, so i am happy camper.

You "only" need 1/1000 for footy, so you could reduce your ISO

Not necessary, sometimes even 1/2000 is not that fast to freeze completely, and i wanted to sure have that sharper shot, i did shoot from 1/640 up to 1/3000[when it is day time] and mostly with slower speed the faces or the ball is blur, so that i try to keep my shutter speed as high as i can, and i don't care much about higher ISO, with MKIII i can go up to ISO1600 with good quality, and with 1DX i can go up to ISO10000 with good quality, and under our stadium i can manage to shoot 1/1000-1/2000 within ISO1250-5000.

1dx might be a speed machine - but what are people's thoughts to it regarding landscapes, particularly versus the 5D3? After some views from landscape shooters who use both Thanks

Nothing much, but i don't think it will be any much different than any tool, it is a camera at the end, what do you want to know about that 1DX compared to 5D3 for landscape? IQ will be both identical, with that 5D3 are slightly more mp which doesn't matter many of members nowadays, 18mp vs 22mp is not much to tell difference about, so if i have 5D3 i will shoot with it same as i shoot with 1DX too, both in single AF one shot for landscape.

New firmware coming, guys!!
Improved Operability for the EOS-1D X

Developed as the ultimate Canon EOS camera, the EOS-1D X Digital SLR is designed with foresight that enables its performance to be periodically improved with new firmware upgrades, helping to ensure maximum long-term value for owners and users of the camera. These improvements are engineered to support and advance the evolving creative needs and business imperatives of professional photographers and committed high-end amateurs. The features provided by firmware version 2 are designed for more efficient automation that takes the task of changing settings away from the “heat of the moment” and enables photographers to concentrate on creativity and obtaining valuable shots. Firmware version 2 upgrades and operability additions include a total of 10 features that are now new or improved:

AF Performance with Moving Subjects – For greater creative control, additional parameters have been added to AI Servo 2nd Image Priority, enabling users to adjust these settings for more accurate AF performance according to the situation at hand. Photographers can fine-tune the balance between prioritizing focus versus the framing rate for the second and subsequent shots in a burst.

Enhanced AI Servo AF Performance in Low Light Conditions – The AI Servo focusing algorithm has been improved to allow more time for light sampling during AF activation prior to shutter release, enhancing AF performance in low-light situations. Additionally, initial AF control is now based on the new “+2 focus priority” setting of AI Servo 2nd Image Priority, which has higher distance measurement capabilities under low-light conditions. Upon full depression of the shutter button, settings from AI Servo 1st Image Priority take over and then settings from AI Servo 2nd Image Priority are applied on any subsequent images in the burst. This increases the probability that the first image in a burst sequence will be as sharp as possible.

Improved Acceleration/Deceleration Tracking Parameters – To improve tracking performance of fast-moving subjects that fill the frame, additional parameters for acceleration/deceleration tracking in AI Servo AF have been added to provide photographers with more precise control when photographing rapidly moving subjects that accelerate or decelerate quickly or unexpectedly. In response to feedback from professional photographers, these new settings have been added to handle larger differences in speed (i.e., the rate of change in image magnification) compared to the previous firmware.

Selection of Initial AF Point While Shooting in 61-Point Auto Selection AF – This new option in the AF Menu provides more continuity when switching to 61-Point Auto Selection AF from any other AF Point Selection mode. The option maintains the AF point selected from the previous Selection mode as a starting point for 61-Point Auto Selection AF. It also maintains the ability to change to a pre-programmed AF point when changing the Selection mode. This time-saving option is designed to help eliminate the need to stop and think, and helps photographers to customize their individual shooting style.

AF Point Switching According to Camera Orientation – In addition to programming the EOS-1D X camera to automatically switch to a different AF point and area selection mode based on camera orientation, firmware version 2 adds the option of programming only the AF point according to camera orientation (horizontal, grip up and grip down). This new ability to select up to three different AF points according to camera orientation allows for greater customization of the camera to specific shooting styles.

Expanded Minimum Shutter Speed in Auto ISO – In response to user feedback, this improved functionality in Auto ISO enables photographers to select a minimum shutter speed as high as 1/8000th of a second to freeze moving subjects.

Exposure Compensation in Auto ISO with Manual Mode Set – This new function enables photographers to manually set a desired shutter speed and aperture, use Auto ISO to control the exposure, and use Exposure Compensation to adjust the exposure for challenging lighting conditions (e.g., a very dark or very bright background). This new function can be activated through the Quick Control Dial or by using the Main Dial while pressing the SET button.

Toggling Between Alternate Camera Settings – EOS-1D X camera users can now toggle between three groups of camera settings instantly by pressing the shutter button, AE Lock button [*] or the AF-ON button. Selectable settings that can now be assigned to the AE Lock and AF-ON buttons via Custom Controls include:

Currently selected AF point vs. pre-registered AF point
AI Servo AF configuration sets (Case 1 through Case 6)
One-Shot AF vs. AI Servo AF
Currently selected drive mode vs. 14 fps Super High Speed drive mode
With these new options, photographers can reconfigure their EOS-1D X camera on the fly, while keeping their eye on the viewfinder to maintain concentration on the shot they are trying to get. For example, the camera could be set up for One-Shot AF and single shot drive mode on the shutter button, AI Servo AF in Case 1 with high-speed continuous drive mode on the AE Lock button, and AI Servo AF in Case 4 with super-high-speed 14 fps continuous drive mode on the AF-ON button.

Same Exposure for New Aperture in Manual Mode – This new firmware feature provides users with the ability to maintain consistent exposure levels in Manual mode when the aperture changes, for example when a photographer shoots at maximum aperture with a variable-aperture lens (such as the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM telephoto zoom) or when using a lens equipped with built-in extender (such as the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X). The feature gives users the option to have the camera adjust the shutter speed or the ISO to compensate for the aperture change.

Display Protected Images Only – Users can now page through protected images only via an option on the main dial. This feature already exists with rated images, and is an expansion of that capability.

Great that you can dial in exposure comp on manual with auto iso!!-my comment!!
