Boxing ?
Anyone here have experience of and advice on how to Photograph Boxers ?
I am taking pics in amateur club, the lights low, so I'm on 3200 AI servo case 1 or case 5
400th sec F2.8 but frustratingly few pics, even with my 1dx, coming out in focus.,

I ahve done a lot of boxing wiht the 1dx... My last one the light was so poor I was at iso 25600 ... I think the first thing you need to do is up your ISO.. personaly I would start at iso 12800 .. the pics should still be clean and you will up the shutter masively.. with boxing a bit of noise can enhance the pics..

you dont say if you ahve done boxing before and got better results? if not it could be your technique.. for example using center spot is poor.. need to be flicking left and right..

I am covering a big boxing event on sat.. lighting will be reasonably good.. but even so i will probably be starting at iso 12800 and once i have a decent shutter of 800 upowards then I can maybe afford a better aperture.. get to f4 or f5.6 ... boxings terrible for 2.8 really if your getting close up..

I dont use zooms... I use a 35 m prime.... one thing less to do zooming... they circle the ring enouhg.. i get close up when they come near and full leangth when they go other side...

aftre all that... out of all the sports I do.. boxing probably has the lowest keeper rate for me.. not just OOF but repetative pics as well..

if you want a more indepth answer your better posting pics..

Thanks Kipax thats really helpful
I'll try to post some pics later on.
Never shot boxing before and never really used the technique of 'flicking left and right'
Can you say more about that ?

One other thing. I'm setting the Colour to AWB or Custom and I'm getting strange results
all the pics are coming out with inconsistent colours - any idea why this would be ?

I would guess that there may be some fluorescent light about and, at 1/400th, you're only catching part of the light's cycle at each exposure.

oops sorry.. ya probably better asking that in TALK SPORT as its not 1dx specific.. but anyways :)

with boxing your mostly going to have boxers on left and right.. if you use center spot to aim at one boxer.. your going to cut off half the other... so i set CfnIII.10 to out 9.. then when shooting i use the thumb stick to flick the focus point to left and right..use that to fucus on the attacking boxer..its really quick and works perfect...for me :)

Thanks Kipax
I'll take this over to Talk Sport as you suggest
still not clear about the focussing maybe we could continue this conversation there ?
Cheers

Anyone shooting video on the 1DX ?
I tried it for the first time this weekend but somethings not right
sound syncs out and movements a bit strange, not sure if its the camera or the settings I'm using - but as they worked ok on the 5d think it must be the camera
anyone any advice ?
cheers

Anyone seen any used or refurb ones yet.... prices dont seem to have dropped any from original either..

There have been a couple for sale 2nd hand around the £4k - £4.2k price range.
£4480 is currently the cheapest I've seen for a genuine UK model: http://www.visuals.co.uk/salesProductDetail.php?PRODUCTID=3292905&PARAM=EOS-1DX

I'm not sure if the recall backlog has cleared now, but I sent mine back for a sensor clean on a Monday, and it was back with me on the Thursday, having found a few spots on the sensor at higher apertures following the recall work a few weeks earlier that the built in sensor cleaning function wouldn't shift. The UPS return label supplied was marked "keep in-house".

Does anyone know if the recall back log has now been cleared ?
Doesn't appear to have been cleared in France yet. Mine were both registered a few days after the recall and I'm still waiting for a collection notice. The French do tend to clear off in July and August though.

Funnily enough, I called Elstree yesterday as the turn around quoted a month or so ago was too long for me to take a chance, and mine is being picked up on Monday and I've been told they are still busy, but that if I put the date I need it back for they would accommodate that, I need it for a week on Wed, and that's platinum service....also getting my 300 2.8 mk2 firmware updated at the same time as that had never been done and she said they'll pay the shipping cost if I put them both in the same box so result there!

Interestingly, one of my friends got his 1Dx back from the recall and immediately went off on a trip......luckily had a 5D3 with him as the 1 DX af packed up after 1 day.....when he got it back to Elstree after returning he had to have a new mirror box fitted and it's fine now. Hmm..

.... I need it for a week on Wed, and that's platinum service.....

My 6 week wait is also platinum service....Lord help the others.
However, I suspect that the platinum guarantee of a loan body may actually slow things down and they may favour silver or gold so that they don't have the same obligations.

Bob

and when theres a wa.................. no best not :)

It was just down to simple bad luck, Tony...the balloon went up in July and August when they were all away sunning themselves on the southern beaches. By the time they came back in September it was too late. (that's a rough translation anyway :))

There are loan bodies available in the UK, Bob, I was actually bemoaning the fact it would take that long for what I'd have thought was a fairly simple check/fix?

Sent mine on the first of this month, Will be with me Tomorrow I hope.

This perhaps highlights the point I was making, George. A 14 day turnaround at the moment and it's unlikely that they would want to send loan bodies out for that length of time. It's therefore less costly for them to ignore platinum members until the rush is over and they can achieve a quicker turnaround without resorting to loan bodies.

Hopefully it'll be back by the weekend, George. Out of interest, how long is it since you completed the return form?

Probably about the beginning of July, Bob, maybe a week or so before that, but told them I'd get it done later, they offered to send it to Fixation, which I didn't want.

I ahve had a few loans for one reason and another.. mkIV and 1dx...always come from germany not UK

The loan 1Dx I got came from head office, perhaps one of their loan bodies for marketing..I had to update the firmware!!

Well mine came back from Fixation this Morning, Looks like it's had a shutter clean as well:) Seems it's much better, (Quieter)

Oulton park then to test it ?

Totally off 1 Dx but i may be at Oulton Pk end Sept for MR2 series as my son is competing....may I pm you nearer the time for best places for shots etc?

George.

They had a used one for sale at Aperture a month or two ago for 3800 quid (I think that's right).
It was described as mint with 1 actuation?

Needless to say it soon went.

Stew.

Just got my 1DX back from the Canon recall it went to Colechester camera's for the work who turned it round in a few days they collected it Tuesday pm and i had it back Monday, this was done whilst i was away on holiday had it collected and deliverd to my work place. repair note states that rework done sensor and focusing screen both cleaned so a thumbs up to Colchestercameras from me

Well I got mine back yesterday from Elstree, exactly 1 week after it was collected, sensor and body cleaned and all well apart from one thing.....and this has happened to me before.

When I sent it off the file no was in the 6000 range, when it came back it was at 9980, this is the file no which is put on the images, not the no of actuations as shown in the menu.
When I spoke to Elstree about this, they said it sometimes happens and there is nothing they can do about it, has anyome else had this happen and if so what did you do about it?

I assume they put in a card of their own to do a test shot to ensure the sensor is 100% clean? Formatting the card prior to the test shots would probably stop this from happening?

When I got mine back they had put a grand total of 2 actuations on the camera.

I always reset the filename count manually prior to each event, along with a different 4 character prefix, so it wouldn't have bothered me. If I have a short deadline after a race meeting, I'll change the 4 character prefix for each race (A, B, C...) so I can quickly copy just the files I need to work on from the memory cards and start processing them straight away.

I never check file numbering before it goes hhhm one to check i guess..

if ever anyone wants to sell there 1dx let me know.. or if downgrading to a mkIV :)

Yes, John, I'm sure that's the problem...but why don't they format the card every time?

OK on the 1 Dx you have the shutter actuation count in the menu, but as far as I'm aware (and perhaps the 5D3 has it as well) it's the only one.
If that happened to someone with another body, it could mess up his info when trying to sell it!!

I did a shutter count check before sending mine off, and it came back with a shutter count of 50 frames higher.

Hi everyone, so I finally got my hands on a 1DX, been waiting for one for a while my main body was the 5D MKIII, so keeping an eye on this thread.
