Canon 1DX - Official Owners Thread

Any time George :).
What got me intrigued is that lens firmware is user upgradable (via compatible EOS body).

So I don't know why they didn't provide a file download and instead wanted the lenses at the service centre.

Ivan, I've heard varying reports about this, and you may know better, but I believe although you can check the software on 1 Dx and 5 D3, a special piece of equipment is required for the actual upgrade.

platinum member here.. now wed and no notification that its done or coming back yet..but they only took it monday.. got it tuesday.. so today is day 1....

I queried this with them some time ago for a different job and they reckon the turnaround days is from the day after they recieve it..

They got mine Monday and just missed the dispatch slot yesterday but is with UPS now and should be here tomorrow. I'm a gold member so yours in theory should be faster.

Would you mind putting a tutorial together and posting in this thread ?

I'm actually looking to import direct at pitch side with either USB or Cat5... Prefer USB

OK, but this could be of general interest......

Flexibillity of the cabling Nige..pure and simples...Cat5 would be great if the distance was an issue but as Id have the laptop next to me, then the USB cable would be better.

I had thought of USB but the thing putting me off is the chance of the cable coming out when moving the camera away to use the other camera.

My thought is at least with Cat5 there is a reassuring "click" as the connector goes in and less chance off the cable disconnecting

Just got this...

Dear Customer,

Your unit will be delivered shortly or is ready for collection by arrangement.

Yours Sincerely

I've got mine back but as yet haven't given it a full test. Focus seems to lock on a bit quicker but that might be me. The one thing I have noticed it my 300 f2.8 and 1.4 combo needed a bit of MFA before but is now spot on without MFA.

Time will tell.

Well mine was collected Monday. Rang today to ask about it, it hasn't even been looked at.

Not happy at all with this as I was told on the phone when it was booked it it was being done I'm an organised manner and I would have my camera for this weekend.

Ringing Elstree and they've informed me it's just a free for all with some bodies from last week with cps members details not being looked at.

Very very poor IMO. Don't allocate slots for collection if you are just going to create a backlog.

Mines just arrived.. some wierd stuff on the invoice..

Cleaned dust from mirror box and sensor unit. done as goodwill american model....

I bought mine from kerso.. thus i bought mine from a UK company and thats me covered for warranty.. not my business where kerso gets his stock (yes i know where)

M25 on a Friday afternoon he won't need to scweam and scweam he'll be sick anyway

did you threaten to scweam and scweam until you where sick ? :)

Lol. The lady I dealt with on the phone to be honest was fantastic, a true gem - if I'd written her name down I'd recommend her for her service.

She said today she did a bit of stomping and it was done first thing.

I don't mind waiting my turn if I'm aware of the situation, but I explained when canon first rang me last week that I needed the body back on this date and was guaranteed it would be the case...

Oh yeah and it took 5 hours for the round trip :gag::gag:

Mine gets picked up on Monday then sent to Fixation... Lady said its normally a 4 day turnaround... Poo..

Tethered with Cat5 direct to PC ? Or USB ?

Have done both with Cat5 into my MBP and also USB. Granted the Ethernet cable takes longer to kick in than the USB but the transfer rate is near as instant into EOS Utility.

Have recently used it on my Surface Pro which found a really great experience!

Ironically I sent my 1DX back 3 weeks ago after observing specs in the prism and also a dirty sensor observed.. I removed the back focus screen and checked that and ironically got the smallest of nicks on it (which wrote that off), sent back for fix, got billed for the BF Screen clean and a Saturday Delivery to the tune of £100.. And that's also being CPS Platinum.. Mega..

Have filled the form in tonight with the link from Frankie Jim as been abroad with no camera and now off to Russia for 2 weeks on Sunday and need the camera..

I thought you cleared the Kerso purchase with Canon to ensure it was covered for warranty ?

I did..dont forget these recalls havent asked for purchase info... when you send stuff back under warranty you have to provide proof of where bought... but not for these recalls...

So when it goes back for another problem I ahve.. I will send the UK company invoice and all will be OK :)

Interestingly there was a customer at Elstree when I was there where they had a camera bought from calumet and it was coming up as a us body...

Was there a problem with that?...US bodies used to be covered no problem!

There seemed to be some discussion on it. To be honest, I believe a recept was asked for if future work need.

Not being funny but I don't see why international purchases on 'pro' kit should be any issue. I mean working togs travel the world, some may buy cameras when away to replace others etc..

Hi guys, I'm hoping to make my purchase within the next few weeks :)
I have a query, what do retailers do about there currant stock when there is a recall if anything...? I'm going to be a tab upset if I buy a 1dx and it has to go in straight away for update...!

Based on the 1DMkIII recall in 2009 then nothing....just bad luck.

Two things though....
I suspect that this problem was identified a while back and recently shipped units will have been sorted in production (hence the markings on some bodies).
Secondly, it doesn't look like there's a need for an instant fix and the recall will remain open for a long time...you can happily use it until you have a suitable gap to send it off.

I was using one which was a month old, and it hadn't needed the recall.
Why not check your serial nomber when you'll buy, that will tell you.
If you follow the recall link, it tells you which serial nos are affected.

I would expect the shop to send them in as a Service Note is fairly serious. Canon probably wouldn't allow a certified canon retailer to sell affected stock. I think recent stock should be ok. I bought mine 3 months ago and mine is affected, so had to send mine in...

Question - I know nothing's been said, but would this AF recall affect the 5D3, as they share the same system?

Not sure. They would have said something by now. But from what I can tell, its specifically 1DX and 1DC related due to the parts that are impacted.

It's a similar system, not the same system. The AF sensor array in the 1Dx has f/5.6 cross pairs as well as f/4 but the 5D3 only has the f/4's (excluding the f/2.8's obviously).

not that I've noticed anything wrong with it, just wasn't sure - however using a clients 1dx a few weeks back on BIF, it was really hunting causing all sorts of issues so glad they've started fixing the issue
