Canon 1DX - Official Owners Thread

Hmmm, just checked my error report, and err 02 is back, another battery drop in performance.
Haven't done the latest firmware update yet, anyone else had this problem recently?
Thought it had been fixed with the replacement batteries I got!!

Edit...just read the firmware upgrade details and it fixes this phenomenon....

after updating the firmware to 1.2.4 the caution 02 message has not appeared over the last 2000 shots.
before the update it appeared pretty much every time i used the camera the skeptic in me makes me wonder if it's a genuine fix or the caution message has been masked so we don't see it

it never really bothered me the camera performance didn't suffer despite the message

What a cynical approach, I never thought of that...:thinking::geek:

I wouldn't put anything past camera manufactures although I never had the 02 error before I upgraded the firmware.

Had about 5 warnings since I bought it over 2 batteries...taken about 10,000 shots.
I had 2 replacement batteries from Canon, didn't make a blind bit of difference and I agree never had a problem, but if it was a software glitch it needed fixing.
Let's hope it's fine now.

1 battery.. plenty of warnings.. 200 thousand shots ..never a single problem

Anyone shooting Cricket with 1DX ?

Funny you should ask.. I have done over 20 cricket matches this season so far.. I made the decsion to use the mkIV for the extra reach and could not see any advantage in using the 1dx...the mkIV worked perfect..

Last sunday I decided to swap cameras for the second inning as I wanted to try the dx multiple exposure options (I failed miserably wiht that BTW) and subsequently shot a fair bit of cricket wiht the 1dx for first time.. http://www.kipax.com/gallery/index.php?album=CRICKET/2822/

The pictures cropped from full frame v the pictures with extra reach.. I think the 1dx slightly wins out..more pleased wiht them.. the files from 36 onwards are 1dx and all the ones before are mkIV

Please note anyone viewing my pics.. this is not a portfolio or a showcase for my work.. these are pictures for sale...

I have a very important match on sunday with a bowler about to break a massive wicket taking record.. I will use the 1dx for the extra frame rate to make sure I get the shots with a window of a few seconds.... rest of time for the amount of cricket pics I do.. probably go back to mkIV

If I had to make a choice.. the 1dx would win for everyhting.. but as I already did 200 thousand clicks.. let the mkIV be the workhorse for a bit.. thats my thoughts :)

addyonbit1 : one of the pro photogpahers i look up to has got himself a 7d for cricket.. even more reach and as above.. its a workhorse just for cricket only.. as mostly shot in decent light then the 7d is great for shooting all day..

addyonbit2 : I dont get on wiht extenders on the 400mm using a 1.4 you dont get every shot.. the ones you do get are great but not all are good quality.. without the extender all are good quality... I use the 1.4 with the 70-200 at junior small pitch football and thats about it.....really dont get on wiht extenders me.. never have :(

Its the extender issue that I wanted to know more about Tony, Was it the mk3 1.4 TC you were referring to ?

I have some Cricket coming up in a few weeks and wanted a heads up. unfortunately I dont have the MKIV any more....Im stuck with a couple of 1DX's tough eh ;)

I thought about using an old 7D as a workhorse body. Especially with the second user price dropping like mad.

How are you finding the White balance on the two bodies, Are they both the same or are you getting differences between the 1DX and the MKIV.

Sorry for all the questions but with over 200k clicks you are probably the most experienced user of the body at the moment.

I ahve the mkIII 1.4 and the mkII x2

Whne I use the 1.4 the pics arnt as good quality as without and the hit rate suffers... this is moreso wiht the 400mm.. also happens wiht 70-200 but not as much...

when it hits perfect they are perfect.. but quite a lot of them are off.. I need to know that every shot is going to be right..

I use the extender on 70-200 when the 400 too long and 200 too short and its not a critical shoot :)

you need to get to a cricket match and test it out mate..

for me..a cropped non tc is better than a tc i ahve to edit to look right..

sorry hard to explain...

the wb can look different but not one better than the other.. again.. hard to explain.. for me if i am using a lens at 70 and a lens at 400 the setting are different.. the 70 wide might have more sky in it than a 400 zoomed on a subject.. thus the lighting is different..

still hard to explain :)

Yeah I know what you mean about the WB. Even though I was using the same picture styles on the 5D3 and the 1DX whilst shooting a game with WB set to auto, I was getting some crazy differences in the colour of the grass, I've even done a custom WB on both bodies and still got differences, hopefully now with the same bodies the WB will be more consistent.

I was thinking about going to shoot a few cricket matches to get my eye in and sort out kit and settings. I have to admit, the images I was getting using the MKIV were more than acceptable.

Thanks for the pointers and experiences.

Exactly why I use mine now.. they are great... I will only use the 1dx on sunday as its critical I get celebrations when the player breaks the wicket record.. every frame... covering for 2 local papers and the cricket paper.. just gives me an advantage of more frames.. but will need more cropping..

You will need to watch out for how many pics you take thats all. shutter count soon goes up with a 1dx at cricket and its a lot to go through when you get home..

Damn, both mine fall within the range without the A marking in the battery compartment.

mine falls within the serial number , does not have the A stamped in the battery compartment but does have the black mark on the silver bracket
the black square looks like it's been done with a permanent marker but it is a uniform square ( not just drawn on ) so it looks like mines not affected :)

OK guys, before you send off the 1Dx, save your settings to a card, just in case they return everything to factory settings.

Use the Spanner 4 menu - Save/Load cam settings on card

Oh dear..... Here we go again. Lest hope it does not turn into a MKIII saga! Having said that, mine have been working well!

Thanks for the heads up on my page btw dude!

This will be an excuse for people to slam the used prices down no doubt come upgrade time.

Mines had a few hissy fits but usually works well.

Anyone else find when they fill out the registration form it just goes to a plain white page after? My net is spazzing.

Both mine will be on their way too....c'est la vie.

Bob

Mine too, just been looking at one a month old and it's s/n starts with an "8"....perhaps it's virtually a general recall effectively.

Doubt if it's too serious?

I expected mine would be one of the ones to go back as it was an early issue. Looking at the numebr range it would seem to be the majority of 1DX's that will need to go.

After I submitted the form to Canon I was just left with a white screen, not sure whether it was received or not? Anyone else had that problem?

Paul

Thanks also to John for spotting this

Ha same as me, nice to see they want to sort this ASAP although one wonders if the need to sort is ASAP is meaning they're worried.

over 200 thousand clicks on mine so i dont think its anything that urgent or mine would ahve died..

the problem i find wiht photogrpahy.. your happy wiht your camera.. things go wrong and you can blame yourself.. convinced the camera is ok so must be me or my settings... its so hard when pics start not turning out to know if you or not.. I used to get every shot of a sequence in focus.. now not..sometimes i wonder why a pic isnt right when i know the settings right and presume its my age and holding of the camera...now i wonder if its the setting or the fix?

yeah im about 130-150K and its my workhorse.

Shame the arse fell out of the mkiin and mkiii market, as should have sold them both a year ago to fund a second Dx.

Just had an email from Frankie enclosing the form, I must say they seem to be on the ball on this one.
Can't do anything till Mon as on Shetland for the week shooting otters!!

yeagh.. I got a very good price for one mkiv when i bought this.. dont suppose will be worth much for the second one to fund another :( I use mine every day for work.. will use the mkIV no problem for day work.. but indoors or night gotta be the 1dx

Filled out the registration form and pressed "Register Data" then nothing

Don't know if I should have had some sort of acknowledgement, but will ring Canon Support tomorrow just in case the registration failed

Mine did the same but I got an email from Canon today and the camera is being picked up tomorrow.

just about to join the club (ordering my 1dx tonight for Tuesday delivery), just wanted to ask if anyone had any problems with it in regards to hooking it up with the older supertele's (as i'll be hooking mine up to my old 600mm mk1 and on occasion 1.4x mk2). I only ask as I seem to recall a firmware update to address such a problem but cant remember if it was for the dx or another of canons bodies.

ta in adv
Andy
