Canon 1DX - Official Owners Thread

Had a good play with one at Focus today. A marvellous bit of kit.

:shrug:Where are the usual suspects on this thread?
Is nobody having comments, problems or just plain delighted?
I've just come back from 5 weeks in Mexico and the camera just blew me away, it's so much better than any other Canon I've had, particularly the AF.

Took a sequence, for instance, of a humpback fluking, every shot spot on in focus and used the full 34 frames to get a complete series from coming out of the water to submerging at 12 fps!!..and that with a 70-200 plus 1.4 T/C.

Normally I'd have used the 7D quite a lot for the wildlife, but it hardly came out of the bag.

It is a superb body.

I think its consistent performance has made it into a pretty unremarkable camera, George. There's very little to say about it because it just "does it" with no fuss. I've got a 1D4 sitting here and it's taken less than 100 shots in 7 months...and I though that I would miss the 1.3x

Bob

I remember Kipax saying he though he would miss the 1.3x of the 1D4 but he said when using his 400/2.8 he can just crop in and lose nothing.

I have seen he's even looking to sell his 1D4 to get another 1Dx.

Bob - I presume taking just 100 shots in 7 months - you're just keeping the 1D4 'oiled' :D

Talking of Tony, haven't seen him around for a while. Anyone know how he is?

Busy as usual I imagine.

Well up to a point, Bob, however I can't remember a time when there were not issues with Canon's top bodies, and that alone makes it remarkable!!!

The only issue I have with the AF, is when I'm trying to photograph a bird...eg a puffin...flying straight at the camera, but I haven't had a chance to play around with that scenario much and it could be operator incompetence, will try this spring when the puffins return!!

My pal, who has all the latest Nikon stuff, was extremely impressed with the 1 Dx af, he wasn't getting as consistent results with a D4, although it was pretty close.
Previously he could tan the pants off me prior to the 1 Dx...but I don't want to start controversy !!
Let's say they are both excellent.

Roll on a mini 1 Dx with a 1.6 crop, similar noise performance and the same AF.
Make a great backup.

George.

Just roll on cheaper prices for it.

Under £3k would be very nice

I can't wait to see how it perform with the new 400mm 2.8IS II, I pick mine up on Tuesday.. yum yum

Yes i think that will be a stunning combo. Works great with the 300/2.8 II but for sports the extra reach will be awesome.

Focus speed is insane.

Simon have you done a bank job do get the 400 mk2??, please dont tell me that its fantastic you know what lens envy is like i will only want one

Even when I have stuck a 1.4x III between the 1Dx and the 400 f2.8 II the focus speed and IQ are outstanding

Remembering the command......thou shalt not covet thy neighbours camera gear!

It did have its spot metering problem for the first couple of months but clean as a whistle since then. The 1D4 also came out pretty clean....there may have been the odd issue but I seem to have purged it from my memory.

The most impressive thing for me is that I can simply wind up the Iso to keep acceptable shutter speeds and not have any concerns about noise. (outdoor sports specifically).

I agree about the iso performance, it really does make a difference with wildlife as well.

Will the dynamic range get less at higher iso settings?

That's one area that Nikon seem to be better at, but will it really make much difference?

George

How many shots on the 1Dx Bob?

Welll BSB is back on and my 1DX just hit 18K clicks and im still gobsmacked by its performance, It just does everything you want it to do with ease. Few pics in the motorsport forum if anyone is interested.

Anyone use AF Point Auto Switching ? If so what were your thoughts in deciding to to select it

Tug - I think Bob has tried it, so he may be in at some stage to comment.

I set up my 1Dx's using settings suggested by Peter Read Miller, the American sports photographer here
He didnt mention AF Point Auto Switching in the article, so mine is still set to the default of zero. Looking through the separate guide that Canon produced here, they talk of leaving it set to zero for stuff like golf, but setting it to 1 for sports with erratic movement. They use rhythmic gymnastics as an example.

Based on this, I think setting AF Point Auto Switching to 1 may be worth a try for football

Thanks for that Nige, I did read the Canon guide but I still wasn't sure if it would benefit my footy or rugby shooting. It will however be a great asset for gymnastics.

I'll take a look at Peter Read's settings...

I've been playing around with the different settings a bit for wildlife, I was photographing humpbacks breaching in Mexico and I found I used case 3 in the menu but with the af point auto switching set to +2.

Virtually every shot was in focus despite quickly shifting from one area of focus to another, I found when it was set at 0 the response time was too slow...but of course that ain't motorsport!
Nigel, your link to Miller doesn't seem to work, I get a flower?

George.

Just read that, Nigel, interesting info, thanks....and better than the flower!! (or more useful, actually!)

George.

How many shots on the 1Dx Bob?

Just approaching 7.5k across the two bodies, Robin

I have it set to '1' with the 300/2.8 and '2' for the 200/2. I tried various settings at the start and it took me a while to realise that the lenses (or their usage) benefitted from different settings.

The 300/2.8 is generally for the more distance stuff and the 200/2 when the action gets closer.....I guess that the closer action can move around the frame more quickly. (BTW, were taking football here)

Me too. I'll go for a setting of 1 on the 400 and a setting of 2 on the 70-200.

We'll have to compare notes afterwards
Yeah that's a good idea..

I'm blown away Nige ! The lens is amazing yum yum

Yep, it's the dog's danglies and well worth swapping a kidney for :D

Congrats on the purchase. If you are anything like me, you are grinning like a cheshire cat right now and will be every time you use it.

If you have any cash left :bonk:, I can recommend the Don Zeck lens cap. It's much easier to use than the Canon one

Cant wait to see some of your shots with the new lens

I sold my 400 mkii to Tugster today :) hope you enjoy it!!!!

Haha! Just glad someone can do it justice. Was an impulse buy over xmas and didnt use it as much as it should have been! Sounds sacrilegious but I am also tempted to sell my 1Dx (just sold my 7D, quite happy to stick with 1 body)....it's a great camera but for what I do now the 5dmkiii is ample! How much do they go for pristine, three months old

That will be a rare beastie second hand. I'd have it, but I already have 2. Missus would chop them off if I went for a third :D

Try putting it out in the Price Check part of the forum to get an idea of selling price
