That in-depth discussion, and rationalised argument, has finally sorted it for me. Thanks.Depends what you shoot and if it suits your needs.
I remember Kipax saying he though he would miss the 1.3x of the 1D4 but he said when using his 400/2.8 he can just crop in and lose nothing.
I have seen he's even looking to sell his 1D4 to get another 1Dx.
Bob - I presume taking just 100 shots in 7 months - you're just keeping the 1D4 'oiled'![]()
I think its consistent performance has made it into a pretty unremarkable camera, George. There's very little to say about it because it just "does it" with no fuss. I've got a 1D4 sitting here and it's taken less than 100 shots in 7 months...and I though that I would miss the 1.3x
Bob

I can't wait to see how it perform with the new 400mm 2.8IS II, I pick mine up on Tuesday.. yum yum
Yes i think that will be a stunning combo. Works great with the 300/2.8 II but for sports the extra reach will be awesome.
Focus speed is insane.

Even when I have stuck a 1.4x III between the 1Dx and the 400 f2.8 II the focus speed and IQ are outstanding
Remembering the command......thou shalt not covet thy neighbours camera gear!
It did have its spot metering problem for the first couple of months but clean as a whistle since then. The 1D4 also came out pretty clean....there may have been the odd issue but I seem to have purged it from my memory.Well up to a point, Bob, however I can't remember a time when there were not issues with Canon's top bodies, and that alone makes it remarkable!!!![]()
I agree about the iso performance, it really does make a difference with wildlife as well.It did have its spot metering problem for the first couple of months but clean as a whistle since then. The most impressive thing for me is that I can simply wind up the Iso to keep acceptable shutter speeds and not have any concerns about noise. (outdoor sports specifically).

P.S. Response to the many questions:
Of course it still worksIt's Canon 1D X!

Anyone use AF Point Auto Switching ? If so what were your thoughts in deciding to to select it

Nigel, your link to Miller doesn't seem to work, I get a flower?
George.
How many shots on the 1Dx Bob?

Just approaching 7.5k across the two bodies, Robin
I have it set to '1' with the 300/2.8 and '2' for the 200/2. I tried various settings at the start and it took me a while to realise that the lenses (or their usage) benefitted from different settings.
The 300/2.8 is generally for the more distance stuff and the 200/2 when the action gets closer.....I guess that the closer action can move around the frame more quickly. (BTW, were taking football here)
Bob
Thanks Bob, I'll have a play this weekend maybe Friday.
Yeah that's a good idea..Me too. I'll go for a setting of 1 on the 400 and a setting of 2 on the 70-200.
We'll have to compare notes afterwards
I'm blown away Nige ! The lens is amazing yum yum
I sold my 400 mkii to Tugster todayhope you enjoy it!!!!
Haha! Just glad someone can do it justice. Was an impulse buy over xmas and didnt use it as much as it should have been! Sounds sacrilegious but I am also tempted to sell my 1Dx (just sold my 7D, quite happy to stick with 1 body)....it's a great camera but for what I do now the 5dmkiii is ample! How much do they go for pristine, three months old
