Canon 1DX - Official Owners Thread

I think it can auto focus but NOT continuous auto focus.

So you choose your F stop depending on the dof you want.

That's not very far from the regular B&H price......it just looks cheap when converted to Sterling.

Not me either ... Isle of Man isn't part of the UK. Or the EU for that matter. Or Great Britain. Weird but lovely little place, spoiled only by UK weather!

But it does irritate me that I used to spend 6 months in the US and 6 months in the UK (or IOM) and if I bought a 1DX in the US, which makes perfect sense - I've got to buy it somewhere - then why on earth would Canon refuse to honour a warranty issue whilst I was in the UK? Or vice versa?

I doubt they would refuse if you could show that.

Canon Elstree will honour US bought bodies, they have a reciprocal arrangement with Canon US.

I had the same doubts a few years ago as I was also moving between US and UK, and checked and was specifically told this, and I've had repairs on US bodies done under warranty.

Anyone know of a good price or dealer for the 1DX in the US, because if that's the case, I'll wait a month or two until I'm next over there?

I see ebay and amazon have it regularly at $6,799 which equates to UK approx £4,250

only if sourced in the UK .. I asked canon a month or so ago.. so long as sourced in UK was the answer.

having never had a FF body before.. is anyone using a 17-40 f4l wiht there 1dx and if so.. whats it like.. as in distortion at 17mm ?

hmmm I am now hooked on backup card in slot 2 ..its easy on the mkIV with a 32gb SD but my biggest CF is a 16gb... two 8s and a bunch of 4s

purely for backup whats a cheap (yeagh its emergency only so dont need expensive) large CF card that will keep up wiht the 1dx ?

Not on a 1DX, but it's a great lens on full frame with low distortion, and good value. Anyway, 1DX has in-camera lens corrections, including distortion.

But for your kind of work Tony, I would imagine 16-35L 2.8 would be the one to go for.

I found the 35m slightly too short at boxing.. its absoloutly perfect on the mkIV but the 1dx slight short.. I used the nifty 50 and that was better but...dunno. I have had the 17-40 before and loved it but the f4 limited me.. was thinking it wouldnt now..

I carry a 24 prime and the 35 prime.. i favour the 35 because its such a good sharp lens.. but never use f2 looking to replace both with the one lens.

I was stuck on primes for quality.. but a combo of good camera and good zoom lens.. its not such an issue anymore.

Tony

I am borrowing my brother's 1Dx and the 17-40 is at his house...

I'll be popping down there on Monday, so an take some shots if you like if no-one pops up before then.

Anything in particular?

am just in the thought process ATM TBH

Want to replace the two primes i carry (24 and 35) with a more versatile lens.. having had the 17-40 before i know how good it is but not on a FF.. 16-35 will be too short.

24-70 sounds perfect but having had three (one siggy and two canon) I have never been really happy wiht them

I would have thought the new 24-70 would have been the answer?

Don't start him off looking for his wallet admirable - he'll be busy all weekend..

Fab lens though :)

Kerso or the price?

But seriously it could be a great addition to the 1Dx.

If it's as good an upgrade as the 70-200 was it'll be worth it!

same situation I didnt get on wiht the 70-200 and used the 135 but the mkII is stunning and the 135 collects dust

now using a perfect 35mm prime but the 24-70 as you say could do same as 70-200

But I dont use the wide all that much so doubt it warrants 1800 quid :(

Sell that 135 Tony.

I aint in the VAT bracket.

VAT registration is only compulsory over a certain turnover, but you can still register and claim it back. Might be worth looking into with the amount of dosh guys in your line have to spend on kit.

20% of a few grand is worth having, but I don't think you can reclaim VAT from most of these grey importers, because by some clever accounting route they don't actually pay any - their goods are not eligible. That's as I understand it anyway, could be wrong - they all go a bit quiet when you ask a direct question about VAT...

I didnt realise that.. i didnt think you could do it one way.. claim it without paying it? I 100% dont know.. just doesnt sound logical.

I know.. but I save buying from kerso.. I saved £500 on the 1dx and a simmilar amount on my 400mm lens ..would be great if i could save that and get 20% back but it doesn't happen

Kerso doesn't charge VAT so you can't claim back what you haven't paid.

Sorry, Tony, just seen this.

Well, all I can say is that either their policy has changed..which I doubt but is possible...or Denver Colorado is a new suburb of Edinburgh!!

It doesn't affect me now as I'm not in the US so often, but mt 7D was repaired under warranty approx 13 months ago.

Will ask next time I'm speaking to them, although hopefully that wont be for a while!!

George.
