Canon 1DX - Official Owners Thread

You could be right Gary. The other strange thing is that it works differently after the first bottle of plonk

Here's a DLC article that explains it....bottom of the page.
"However, this only happens when you combine One-Shot AF mode with the Evaluative metering. Switch to AI Servo AF, and/or use any other type of metering, and exposure always continually updates itself as you move the camera"

Bob

Having now read umpteen threads on this subject, I decided to change my mk3 settings to that recommended here viz. "CFN iv. 1 SET TO 2 metering start/meter+af start".

Now then, I have yet to try this new setting on motorsport but will it help, based on details in your post?

Prior to this I was always set with C.Fn iv -1 on 0, ie. focus on back button OR on shutter press and, of course, always on AIservo, centre weighted average and continuous.

Has anybody stumbled across a codec for Windows 7/64 that supports 1Dx RAW files?

Bob

That states that 64 bit isn't supported Mike......and I didn't understand your question so I was hoping someone else would chip in....sorry.

Not sure I understand what it is that you are asking.

I am a foreigner so, It may well be me. ;)

I'm with you Ivan.....I'm not yet a foreigner but I'm slowly becoming one.

Just checking stuff as some of my settings mysteriusly changed the other day.. or did they? anyways errors log shows two caution 02 messages.. i think thats battery?

Bob I am on my mobile but I am sure Microsoft has released one. I will look tomorrow for it.

Try This Bob.
Also this one which supports the 1Dx for sure. Alas is paid for software.

Thu Aug 09, 2012: Version 3.3.0.67 improves raw decoding of Canon EOS-1D X CR2 files, reduces the memory footprint of the Photoshop PSD codec (uses less dynamic memory for decoding of some PSD files) and updates the OpenEXR codec - now built using the OpenEXR 1.7.1 library. The new OpenEXR codec implements support letting applications access the multi-resolution levels of tiled OpenEXR images through IWICBitmapSourceTransform, vastly minimizing the decoding memory footprint when the full resolution image is not needed or wanted.

Some times on, sometimes off...It depends of what I am shooting and what kind of shot I am after.

It just shows how mixed up I am getting over the back button focus thing:'(

Basically I want to know if leaving the back button to focus, as well as the shutter, makes any difference to getting a sharp set of shots?

Or will changing things, so that the shutter will not focus, give a better set of shots?

I thought it would, based on all the threads, until you said...

" But don't believe everything you read!

Half press of the shutter button only locks exposure if you're using One Shot and Evaluative metering....any other metering mode or AIservo will update the exposure the instant before the shutter opens.

Bob "

I was pointing out that exposure isn't locked in all but one specific setup.

I take it Lightroom is no good for what you want to do ( it has supported 1DX since version 4.1) ?

Yes, I use Lightroom (4.2) but was just looking for something for Windows 7/64 that showed thumbnails in Windows Explorer similar to my 1D4, 1D3 and 1Ds3 files. I can't see why Canon have made this 32 bit only

I used it all the time when i was a Canon shooter with excellent results until a little arthiritis set into my thumb and now im a Nikon shooter the Back button is further away than on the Canon so i cant reach it comfortably anymore. :(

One of the reasons I didn't switch to nikon was this. I'm surprised that they don't have a button on the back like canon do * for those who domt have thumbs like an alien.

I tried Ivan and it doesn't work.

Bummer! I guess you all gonna have to fork out $15 for this one... I have it and I can assure you all it works. Small price to pay if you ask me! :)

Can someone please tell me if their charger for the 1Dx makes a slight buzzing/fizzing noise near where the power lead connections to the charger when it is charging.
The fuse in the adaptor plug Kerso supplied has blown I think so I am using a normal UK figure 8 lead which I assume is fine to use but I was a bit worried when I heard the noise. I can't remember if it did this using the supplied adapter. Thought I'd better check in case I am doing damage.

Mine fizzes for a few seconds, Andy, and then stops and ticks like an old mechanical clock.

Is that your heart or the charger Bob? :p

Andy, mine is totally quiet.....felling a bit left out as Bob's sounds the most interesting!!
Wouldn't worry about it being an import from Kerso, all the chargers are the same as far as I know, used mine in many different countries and voltages.

George.

I'll dig the other one out later, George, and see if that's a talkative one too.
Bob

So they all sound like they make different noises. I guess it should be ok then. Only real worry is leaving it unattended. If it's still ok after a few more charges I will assume all is fine.

Well.. totally dissapointed wiht the 1dx for boxing.. One of the sports I really wanted it for.. I had more keepers using the mkIV... Shooting at iso 12800 was easy and pics look great that are in focus..

The problem was I kept losing my focus point with it being black.. you cant really shoot boxing when its in the middle all the time as your subjects are left/right of center.. so i usualy flip the focus point about.. but half the time i didnt know where it was and its a fast moving sport ..

not happy at all. the black almost invisible focus point really let me down today :(

Yes Tony the focus point not flashing red is a PITA. Surely they can fix this and we don't have to wait until the 1DXI..

I struggled the same way when shooting the fire dancing acts in the summer....black boxes at night are nigh on impossible to see. It's probably the most consistent criticism of the 1Dx when you read different forums.

I've just unboxed the spare one and it's silent.....spooky what!

....as is mine, and the 1 Ds3 was also quiet.....so there.

Personally, if it charges the batteries, use it.

Or, if you aren't happy, charge the batteries you have and send it to Elstree, let them decide!!

I've got four of them, George. There's only one that sounds like it's inhabited by a cricket with a pace-maker. I happily used it for two months until Andy got his stethoscope out.

Ssssssss.....tic....tic....tic is fine but sssssss....tic.....tic.....bang isn't.

I was informed by one of the officials from the club that there are no dataco issues involving both under 18s and under 21s.

Obviously if someone from data co contacts me/the forum I fully respect their removal, I am just going on information from the club.

Hmm strange, probably stripped them by accident.

Iso 1000, 1/800 @2.8 at 400mm.

regarding the 1dx in burst mode, again much better than my old set up, AF doesnt seem to go from back to front to front, to back as much. Ok im no football tog, but for my second game ever, I simply used AF preset 4 and am pretty happy with it.
