Canon 1DX - Official Owners Thread

George, worked fine on my Lion. Have upgraded to ML and works fine there as well. I now have a Fusion virtual Lion install as well and again it works fine on that virtual machine.

Well, thanks, Vaughan, I've tried uninstall and reinstall, no luck. Unfortunately my wife's computer is with her in the nORTH OF Scotland, can't try till Fri. Cheers!!

so really - what's the big benefit - on paper they look remarkably close - what are the three biggest differences from a real use perspective

I had a similar discussion with another pro yesterday morning. My friend was asking why I should want to take the 1Dx over the 5D3. While my experience of the 1Dx are limited to two albeit lengthy plays of the camera at Canon Pro Solutions last year I would echo the sentiments already expressed which focus primarily on the needs of a pro photographer. The 1Dx is built towards meeting those needs and especially in sports or action photography.

To begin with, one needs to appreciate that Canon's 1D series is built to tighter tolerances than any of their range, being aimed at the professional market where getting that shot counts. No one is saying that the 5D3 cannot deliver the shots but as Canon Bob suggested, frame rate that is 2x the 6fps offered by the 5D3 counts for shots that you would not get with the latter.

The metering of the 1D body is superior to that of the 5D3 not only in covering a whopping 252 zones compared with 63 for the 5D3 but the 100,000 pixel unit affords the camera a better understanding of each scene with the information being fed into the camera's AF system which in turn improves the quality of the camera's tracking. This is a vast advancement on the already impressive 1D4.

Then one would further benefit from the higher ISO, sheer processing power of the dual Digic 5+ processors and longer battery life of the LP-E4N.

The 1Dx also has better weather-sealing. The 5D3 is only environmentally-sealed. I have shot in the rain with my 1D bodies but I wouldn't risk it with my 5D.

All these do not mean you cannot get the job done unless you have a 1Dx since the 5D3 is an excellent and worthy tool with all the improvements on an already strong-performing predecessor in the 5D2. Ultimately the quality of image captured rests with the photographer but there are real benefits in the 1Dx which help get the job done. The 5D3 has it's advantages too, in that the resolution peaks at 22.3MP v the 18.1 of the 1Dx and it is also lighter while shooting much quieter in silent mode. It's horses for courses and of course, how much one wishes to spend.

While not a scientific test, here nevertheless is an interesting video courtesy of a familiar figure to TP members

wow houston, that was quite a response - and beautifully articulated - I want one - you should be in sales ;) (please don't take that the wrong way)

How are you getting on with your 1DX Tony ? From a sports point of view?

I'm not MAC literate, George, but does any of this make sense to you?

Bob

That's the problem, I'm sure Bob....what a pig's breakfast!!

I'm having to borrow an old Windows steam driven lappy to do FOCal tests on the 1 Dx, which incedently I've just bought and first impressions are excellent...!!

Thanks again, Bob, when I did a quick search I didn't come up with that.

Time for a glass of red wine, I fear!!

Spot on Houston

I have done what I said i wouldnt... I am now yearning for another instead of the 1dmkIV

It really is stunning.

I did a play monday night.. the full monty ..you have to be quick if you dont kno whats coming and you only get one go with ever changing light.. one go or miss it... they are the best play shots i have done.. the 1dx starred..

but for sports.. it really is top notch. inside and out... slightly less reliable in poor light But still better than the mkIV....and i miss the red thingy in the dark ... but yeagh... got some shots here and there that i wouldnt have attempted even wiht the mkIV

very strange the other night at basketball.. i was shooting iso 6400 and about 640 shutter on the 70-200 .. the pics seemed rough... i didnt figure it out until i shot something still and that was OK ... so I upped the ISO to 12800 and doubled the shutter speed and the pictures where crystal clear... i guess my hands arnt as steady as i thought.. iso 12800 and no noise removal needed.... OMG! :)

Already opened, see 3 posts above.....

Just checked and it was the previous version of EOSUtil so have now updated.

Vaughan, what exactly is the version of Lion you are using...I'm on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G56) which as far as I know is spot on and it is the most up to date...perhaps too up to date?

Thanks...

edit..I'm on 2.11.1 so will update...

edit..2.11.4 still crashes with 7D and 1 Dx....

Ok one reason why Pj's love the 1D series bodies... We fight with some 30-40 other Pj's trying to get a picture... it can get rough, Ok I'll be honest, is downright war!!!". The 1D series is built like a bloody tank. Surely you can see the advantages of brining a tank to a battle don't you?... A 5DMKIII or any other body would just break at first contact! Also, this is a tank with a Ferrari engine, capable of amazing speeds. In the heat of the battle, speed and built quality is king. Among all the commotion, It lets you take the picture.... simple as!
So, that alone is worth the extra 2K. I could get technical with other stuff but, for that, you can read the specification sheet!

I dropped my brother's 1Dx from over 6ft :'( on to a brick patio. Apart from a few scratches it's right as rain.

George, it's 10.7.5. Works fine with both the 1Dx and 5DIII. ML 10.8.2 crashes with both cameras though.

Well, thanks, Vaughan, crashes with me, sadly. Something's not right, however the wine is now taking precedence!!

Will have another go tomorrow.

Be interested if any other Mac users have the same probs..

Thank you Sheridant, all you need do is put in a good word with Canon for me.

Well it is what it is Robin and IMHO Canon have built the best body in a long time. While I'm not sure about the resolution at 18.1MP, others who have the 1Dx can offer their testimony but Canon did say to me that they expected the processors to make up for the resolution and that the picture just wasn't about megapixels. Yes I'd want one too. Actually two would be even better

Not that I do this often but.. After my first proper contact with the 1Dx at the platinum preview event, I did tell you love was in the air! And I recall sounding orgasmic like after my 10 day loaner experience....:help:

Still, you played hard to get and now, you lusting after a threesome (2 1Dx's and you)... Didn't know you were into the kinky stuff Tony!!!:bonk::lol:

Please do forgive my colorful language today. It has been a hard day and like George, I have had a bit of the old tipple!
Normal service will resume tomorrow!

I've just realised that my 1D4 shutter count has changed since the second 1Dx arrived....some sort of electro-magnetic influence perhaps?

Bob

Did you put a card in it that hadn't been formatted, Bob?

I have in the past had file numbering going completely haywire if I've inadvertently stuck a card with images from another body into a different camera....and Canon acknowledge this. They can't as far as I'm aware, fix it.

No Moon shots tonight, Ivan?:lol::lol:

That wine must be good, George

I was implying that I haven't used it.

Oh, when you said it HAS changed I thought ...oh, never mind, just a cheap Chilean Merlot...no Chateau Lafite Rothschild tonight......:bonk:

A single nip or two?

A nip of Glayva, on ice, for me tonight.

Dilute with a spot of delux whisky, takes the sweetness away but not the kick....this is off topic, but not unpleasant.

As we're off topic here is a great recipe for a Jack Daniels dipping sauce (goes great with smoked chicken wings)

• 1 cup Jack Daniels Sour mash whiskey
• 1/2 cup peanut oil
• 1/2 cup cider vinegar
• 1/2 cup Heinz ketchup
• 2 tablespoons nutmeg ground fresh
• 3 tablespoons instant coffee powder
• 1/4 cup molasses or honey
• 3 tablespoons salt
• 2 teaspoons Tabasco sauce
• 3 tablespoons lemon juice fresh only
• 2 teaspoons black pepper
• 2 tablespoons cloves ground

Below the fixed recipe for that sauce of yours!

Ha ha good one Ivan.

:beer:No one on the sauce yet other than me?? Wife away for a few nights so it's playing with new camera etc......and the odd glass of wine!!

I've decided tonight will be a bit of Canon's most expensive with Canon's cheapest...1 Dx and a nifty!!

Am investigating also the problem with Mac Lion/Mountain Lion and EOS utility, works for some people but sure as Hell not for me.

I have to go back a number of EOS updates for it to work with a 7D, just won't play ball at all with the 1Dx unless I install latest eos utility with Snow Leopard (I have a Hard drive clone of my system then)

Strange.....

Yea, it's crazy isn't it!!

Well going to have my first outing over the next three days with the 1DX covering BSB at Silverstone so looking forward to using rather than playing with the new camera.

Looking forward to your comments, what lenses are you taking?

Normal service has been restored and so, below, my latest moon shot.
This one is full frame! No crop just resize.

1Dx + EF 600mm MKII + stacked MKIII & MKII EF x2 extenders. (2400mm f/16) Manual focus and exposure.

Even with 10x live view, manual focus proved to be difficult. The lens focusing ring allowed for just 1-2mm of movement from focused to OOF.

Also, I tried to attach my Pentax Q to the rig but, due to clouds obscuring the moon, taking an image proved to be a futile waiting game. I might try again on the 30th with the full moon

BN5P5850.jpg

Please note: exif reports only one EF extender and aperture of f/8 this is incorrect.
