Canon 1DX - Official Owners Thread

To be fair I havent had much of a play.. It was only training at the boxing club and I was late so only got 20 minutes.. but boy oh boy what a difference..

The first and biggest thing I got was focus sticking to what i wanted... for example i had a crowded scene and focused on someone behind everyone else ..small and in the background.. with all my other cameras the focus could and would jump to subjects I didnt want it to even on single point... this stayed rock solid... Needs more testing of course in different light but if that carries on then its a massive UP

Apart from the good things I am discovering in the menu system.. the nifty new bits.. I am still going to the wrong button for ISO and still going to the wrong button to zoom in on the screen.. really annoying..

When I got to boxing ..everything was missing and out of focus.. because earlier i had moved the focus point to one side.. with it being black focus point and pointing at darker things. I didnt realise the focus point wasnt center... they must make it red :(

The reason i got the 1dx though.. the ISO ..

OK on my 1dmkIV I was happy to go to ISO 6400 with good exposure this was highly usable...I would go up to 8000 if pushed.. I have had football from really poor grounds published at ISO 12800 .. but ISO 6400 was my comfort zone..

1dx iso 25600 f2.8 using canon 70-200 mkII

Above is nothing more than a snap shot.. poorly taken so dont worry.. its at ISO 25600 which i would never dream of using on the mkIV ..NEVER!..plus its resized so you wont learn anything.. its straight out the camera no PP

Now heres a 100% crop of the above....AS ABOVE STRAIGHT OUT THE CAMERA..

arnt those two the same thing?
I'm not completely sure as I am still trying to learn what it is that iTR does exactly... but for now it is of little use in my workflow so it stays off.... that may change once I fully understand how it works. :)

**EDIT**

Ah... I see what you mean now (looked at the menu) The thing is you can still set the camera to Auto focus point selection by selecting the rectangle of fire (used to be the ring of fire in the 1DMKIII). I use this mode in very rare occasions but, when I do use it, I do not want iTR on.

I emant the two items in your list are the same option in the menu?

as for its usage.. i already turned it off for the same reason as you :).. the manual itself says it slows AF down.. that set my first alarm bell off.. then when it said in low light blah blah.. most of my usage will be low light so OFF it went :)

Off to see the tall ships thing in liverpool tommorow.. my wife likes em.. so will ahve some daylight pics but dont expect i will learn anything... got a precision and stunt driving event friday night for the paper... so tracking will get a good test..

Here's some fast tracking for you Tony :D:D

Let's see how spot metering gets on in the venues this weekend.

I highly doubt canon have solved the issue but hey ho.

Don't do it!!! (unless you have 2 1 Dx cameras).. Better to test those things in your own free time... not while you are working!!! :rules:

Ill have my 1diii on me too which I always have as a backup.

As its an event I shoot every weekend it's better to test it now than the big shows I have coming up.

At least of I can test it as much as possible now I know if it's clear + hopefully help out the rest of the community also.

Tony good to hear you are happy with the 1Dx (with the few minor niggles you mentioned). :)

I'm now 99.9% certain I will be ordering one very soon, hopefully next week so I can have it for when the Tour of Britain is in Nottingham week Monday.

I am pretty certain I will get;

1Dx
24-105
50 f1.2
2xExtender mkIII

What I am less sure on is which of the following two;

A) 70-200 f2.8 IS mkIII

or

B) 70-200 f2.8 non-IS + a Sigma 85 f1.4

A and B come out about the same total price. Is the newer 70-200 and IS worth more than adding an 85mm for headshots?

Yes the new 70-200 is worth every penny. Get the 135L later for head shots? :)

I did my first football match with the 1dx this morning.. I am now sorry I put the 1dx on the 400mm as it turns out I was wrong (not a new thing I know) I said the 1dx on 400 would be counter productive because of losing the crop... Not so.. its not that mnuch difference at that distance and I was shooting the full length of the pitch and getting better results all round than the mikIV

You kinow what this mean :(

There will be 2 x 1DIVs for sale very shortly for anyone looking? ;)

Just what I was about to say, plus a very happy Kerso with another order.

haha another year and lots of sales before i can think about it..

working with the 1dx and 1dmkIV side my side.. swapping lenses half way.. I got a good feel for the difference and its a big difference..

1dx doesnt miss a beat.. every shot pin sharp in focus... bursts of shots and all inj focus where the mkIV would certainly jump about

I did a car stunt shoot last night working at f2.8 iso 25600 and the paper love em :)

You are pretty much confirming what Ivan has been saying about the 1Dx.

I wonder if on the first day Ivan sat at a game chimping....and just giggling wiht delight :)

It was small peregrine falcons for me on my first day of proper shooting. These things fly at bullet like speeds. The 1Dx passed the test with ease. :)

But, having had a pre- production model for 10 days, I knew what i was getting I did chimp though and, not even news of the world ending in an hour would have wiped the grin off my face

Do you wish you had got one earlier now and not cancelled your initial order?

Ha tell me about it. I asked Frankie to lend me a 400 & 300 2.8 MKII for evaluation purposes. Huge mistake!,,, once you taste the sweet nectar of a 1Dx coupled to an MkII prime super tele you are doomed!

It ended up costing me 17K!!!... (600 & 300mm MKII) :bonk:

I'd like to see photos of rugby and football with the 1Dx and the 300/2.8 IS (mark 1) and whether people feel it's limited in length.

That's my plan for tomorrow Robin....300 on one body and 200 on the other (and a 1.4x in my pocket).

For 95% of sports my standard setup was a 300, although a 500 was nice for rugby, not essential though.

Be great to see some shots and hear your thoughts Bob.

Thanks Ryan but I broke my 300 this week (& my 1.4x) :bonk::bonk: & am waiting for it to be collected for repair assessment..

Thanks Ryan.

Can I ask why a 500 for rugby? I'm assuming you used 300 for other field sports?

Used to get more shots with the 500 as you cover loads more of the pitch, second body had a 70-200. Good combination which I used for years.

Shot half the night tonight in the 'factory' metering mode of the dx and another half with spot metering

It wasn't as hot and humid as the last time when I got a shed load of er.80s but I was err free. So it's been clear for about 6/7000 photos now.

It'll probably jam up on me 2morrow now haha.

How did you get on Bob?

I tried today with 200/2 + 2x. The tracking was great, the focus speed was great but they were very soft. With sharpening they will print absolutely fine at 9x6 though.

That's what AF micro adjustment is for. I always do on the fly AFMA before every session.

I did the first half with 300 on one body and 200 on the other and then put the 1.4x on the 300 for the second half. Acquisition isn't quite as positive but once it's picked up the target then the tracking seems to be just as good. I put the 300 on the newer body and I suspect it needs a little AFMA tweek....I had to push the sharpening slider a little further than normal. 200mm is okay for the nearest third of the pitch but the 300 struggles with the far side...sounds like I'm talking myself back into a 400/2.8, doesn't it?
Overall, a reasonable outing but I need to play around a little with the AF settings and get a feel for what's required in different scenarios.

It wasn't the best sort of game to get a lot of action.....a cup game with a big disparity between the teams and it was 5-0 after 20 minutes and quickly became a pointless stroll before ending up 11-0

Ivan - I did AFMA on it yesterday with Focal (but never checked the result after the test). Hmm will check later.
