Canom 100-400 mk1 & mk2

I'm not sure the IQ improvements are worth £600, but the IQ improvements and traditional zoom vs trombone zoom are probably worth £600.

It's more than the image quality though. 4 stop stabiliser, 3 position IS. And build quality seems to be consistent which wasn't the case with the MkI.

And don't forget the very much shorter MFD of the Mkii as well, and the fact it takes a 1.4x teleconverter perfectly if you have a camera which will focus at f/8. I moved up from the Mki and gave not regretted it for a moment, much as I loved the Mki. My only complaint, which I know will be controversial, is that I miss the much faster zooming of the push/pull system.

I was using a hired one today, having used a Mk1 on the same camera last year.

I was considering buying a second hand MK1 as they are relatively cheap now but having used the MK2 today I would not buy a MK1 for all the reasons stated above.

The MK2 is too expensive for me to justify buying but at £60 for 4 days "weekend" hire from Calumet I'll be hiring it whenever the occasion arises.

I was just saying the IQ alone wasn't enough, but for me, the IQ + traditional zoom would be...
Personally I much prefer the trombone zoom. It's great for an action lens. Don't get me wrong, the IQ of the Mk II is superb and it's *usually* the lens I'd turn to first. But I still love the zoom-shoot action of the Mk I, whereas with the Mk II it's zoom-reposition left hand-shoot.
