Andy I'm not feeling the super sharpness. I know it's down to the resizing etc.

That's a 100% crop, not re-sized.

Anyhow, I'm deleting the crops.. funnily enough on Dyxum someone there is getting grief for crops, so it probably isn't worth posting as its more trouble than its worth!

No, its just isn't worth my time. I shouldn't have posted them without context, but you were looking at 100% crops at 24mm wide at a target over 30 yards, so I don't really know what your expectations are, but its not really worth the effort on my part.

I think only the new Zeiss 24mm would do better for center resolution.

Damn.. just realised my Minolta 50mm f/1.7 is knackered.. aperture is stuck wide open all the time.. I always shot it wide open so never noticed in 6 months!!

Not sure whether to bung it on Ebay for spares, or try to fix it myself!!!

Ah! Its not faulty.. had it on an old film body as a rear lens cap and that body seems to keep the lens wide open when its mounted - battery has just gone flat on the camera :bang::nuts:

False alarm.. lens works fine on A200, A350 and A900 :)

Has anyone tried this LCD protector on an A200? I ordered one last week and it doesn't seem to fit.

I was deciding between buying a sony or a canon but I then heard you can use old minolta lenses on a sony alpha.

I have an old Minolta dynax-4 film camera and two lenses

they are:

28 - 80mm
75 - 300mm

Both autofocus

The sony I was thinking of was either the A500 or A550

The lenses are shown below, just wanted to know if they are any good for the sony

OK so they are OK then... picture quality etc ?

The 300mm did not come with the minolta though I bought that seperate

I haven't used the 28-80, but do have a 75-300 (though it now sits on a shelf as I have the 70-300G to replace it).

The 75-300 seems to work well in reasonable conditions - but I did notice significant CA on mine when trying to photo gulls in flight, for instance.

Used as a 'Semi-macro' for flowers, etc, at 2-3m and it will turn in some nice shots.

Sony rebadged it when they took over Minolta, and it now costs ~ £170 new - but the Sigma and Tamron 70-300 options are both considered better.

I suspect the 18-55 kit lens you would get with a new Sony would outperform the 28-80 (ditto the equivalent kit lens that you would get with Canon or Nikon), so the 28-80 would probably not see to much use.

If you check here you can see how they compare to other similar lenses. All the Minolta lenses with the AF label will work on the Sony bodies.

looks like one hell of a camera. although very beginner oriented . would love to have one like this only without mirror, to be able to shoot street candids very silently.

The A55 actually looks really impressive. Looks a lot more like a bridge camera than an SLR but you can't argue with its performance. Looks like it's gonna be expensive though.

I would say about 700 pounds for the first week. then a bit cheaper.
for me it seems more of a next gen dslr , although I still only need shutter, some knobs and that the camera works precisely, but still - the stuff in the a33,a55 is impressive.

To be honest I think my next upgrade may be something like that. A high performance camera in a small package (no bigger than my A200) as the reason I didn't get on too well with the A700 was because of the extra size of it and is the reason I went back to the A200.

In other news, hopefully receiving my Sony 11-18mm tomorrow, looking forward to trying it out!

yeah ! you got yourself a bargain with the 11-18mm :)
I have the same idea - a700 is pointless. it's still the same crapy small sensor. ether you go FF or stay with a super small body and in this case A55 is genius .

Agreed. The reason I sold the A700 was because whilst the handling was better, it was better quality, weatherproof, made of magnesium, the extra size was only a disadvantage for me, and seeing as 90% of the time I only really use ISO100, the extra high iso performance didn't really matter either. The A55 looks pretty ideal, but I would no doubt miss the shutter sound :p A550 looks tempting in this regard, about the same size as my A200 but with a lot of extra performance. Still not feeling the need to upgrade at the moment. The A200 paired with decent lenses produces absolutely brilliant results.

Quite interesting for us Pentax owners as well .. it seems we may have the A55 sensor going into the K-7 replacement when announced next month.

how true do you think it is ? It would be cool. + more monies to sony to take over the market !

Sony sensors seem to get around a fair bit :p

Is the loss of 2mp on the Sensor, the lack of GPS and the lack of 10fps the only difference between the A33 and the A55? If so, then the A33 may be a more viable option if it's a fair bit cheaper.

Well the K-x uses a Sony sensor and that has sold very well indeed.
Pentax have mostly used Samsung sensors for its previous high end models but that looks a thing of the past so I think it could be a real possibility.

Pentax are also releasing a model (K-R) to go between the K-x and the new model (K-5) and there is a hint that may use the A33 sensor.
